"But you'll still see us go really fast," said Tevanian, according to Cnet.

The Center for Educational Development ( CED ), a longstanding American policy thinktank, released a report on digital intellectual property rights which called for restraint in imposing copyright solutions. "Promoting Innovation and Economic Growth: The Special Problem of Digital Intellectual Property" ( pdf ) supports business models, not federal regulation, as solutions to balancing copyright's traditional interests: incentive for creativity and public access to content.

In one of its leading recommendations, the CED report cautions:

Because quick legislative or regulatory solutions for the problem of digital copyright protection pose risks to innovation and economic growth and are likely to have unintended consequences in a period of rapid technological change, we should move slowly. Our first concern should be to "do no harm." We should dedicate the next two years to attempting to build consensus about the appropriate role in the digital age for traditional legal safety valves that balance the exclusive rights of creators in copyright regimes with users' rights. The DCC looks forward to facilitating this national and international dialogue.

One year after it surprised rivals and partners by jumping into the anti-virus market, Microsoft Corp. still has no clear AV strategy, and users are still hanging on to the promise of integrated Windows protection. The company's sluggish AV development is a far cry from the plans Microsoft trumpeted when it acquired the Romanian company GeCAD Software Srl. last June. At the time, officials in Redmond, Wash., said they planned to use GeCAD's technology to develop new products and enhance the security protections in Windows. The news enticed some users but worried others. And it was especially disturbing to anti-virus vendors such as Computer Associates International Inc., Symantec Corp. and Network Associates Inc. The vendors, all major Microsoft partners, along with some enterprise security managers, were concerned that building AV into Windows would force users to accept the company's solution and abandon third-party tools.

RAP is good!.

I got impatient and couldn't resist trying RAP (RDF API for PHP) with the pet data. I don't know PHP and am no expert on server admin, but it only took a couple of hours to get an installation running and a script together to load the Pet Profiles into a triplestore (ModelDB). Here are the pet statements, transferred live from the (in DB) instance docs.

Wow!  What a coincidence.  We were just talking about RAP and how slow it was the other day on our PeepAgg IRC channel.

Apparently when you want to parse 444 people sized FOAF files (which would be my Tribe FOAF) it'll take forever.  So the question is: "can we optimzie RAP or rewrite it in C - and somehow get that code into a php codebase (like Drupal?)

The sound of an E and E-sharp rang out of an abandoned German church yesterday. They were the latest organ notes in a musical piece that will take another 636 years to finish playing. Avant-garde composer John Cage (1912-1992) composed Organ2/ASLSP in 1985. The title comes from the tempo Cage had in mind when the work would be played: "as slow as possible." This performance at St. Burchardi Church in Halberstadt began September 5, 2001, but until last February the only sound was the building's natural ambience. Since then, a total of five notes have been played. National Public Radio has a page about ASLSP, including audio samples and an "All Things Considered" radio piece from last fall:
