Intel Delivers Breakthrough PC
Technologies To Enhance Digital Home and
Office Experiences
06/25/2004 08:27 PM
“Improved Audio, Video and Graphics Enable Broader Set of PC Uses SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 21, 2004 - In one of the most significant PC platform changes in a decade, Intel Corporation today announced products that usher in a range of audio, video and other capabilities previously found only on specialty PCs. In addition to making the PC experience more entertaining and productive, these technologies pave the way for such emerging capabilities as High Definition (HD) video, 7.1 surround sound and robust file protection for office and home users. These technologies are helping create a new kind of PC, an all-in-one “hi-fi” device with high-definition video, high-fidelity sound and wireless connectivity, according to Louis Burns, vice president and general manager, Intel Desktop Platforms Group.”Just as an afterthought, that press release reminds me of what I dislike intensely about politicians- glittering generalities. “New technologies” and “digital revolution”. Hogwash! In a year we’ll look back and decide that the technology was just another evolutionery step in CPU design and that all those marvelous toys are just so much hype, since about 1% of it ever happened. Oh, the future is certainly bright enough, but look at the realities of it all: Intel has to accept AMD’s 64-bit chip code as the gold standard, their new chips are hobbled and flawed, and they’re pinning their hopes on dual-core chips that aren’t in fab yet, because they weren’t supposed to be produced until 2006. It’s pretty clear that Intel, for whatever reason, made a serious tactical error when it came to 64-bit desktop chips and now they’re trying ever so hard to catch up. I’ve never cared that much for Intel, it’s true. I simply think that they produce good chip concepts, but the execution is a little lame and the prices are too high by 40%. At least they make good motherboards (usually). And in all this time, they haven’t figured out their errors. Maybe they can come up with an entirely new bell or whistle to regain the lead, but I don’t know what it could be… Maybe direct I/O ports on the CPU? Who knows.I do know one thing- “an all-in-one “hi-fi” device with high-definition video, high-fidelity sound and wireless connectivity” doesn’t hold the promise of anything startlingly new and innovative, to me. I think they call it a ‘Home Theatre’ package.

The Economics of Open Source Hijacking and Declining Quality of Digital Information Resources: A Case for Copyleft by Andrea Ciffolilli
http://opensourc e.mit.edu/papers/ciffolili.pdf

Abstract:
The economics of information goods suggest the need of institutional intervention to address the problem of revenue extraction from investments in resources characterized by high fixed costs of production and low marginal costs of reproduction and distribution. Solutions to the appropriation issue, such as copyright, are supposed to guarantee an incentive for innovative activities at the price of few vices marring their rationale. In the case of digital information resources, apart from conventional inefficiencies, copyright shows an extra vice since it might be used perversely as a tool to hijack and privatise collectively provided open source and open content knowledge assemblages. Whilst the impact of hijacking on open source software development may be uncertain or uneven, some risks are clear in the case of open content works. The paper presents some evidence of malicious effects of hijacking in the Internet search market by discussing the case of The Open Directory Project. Furthermore, it calls for a wider use of novel institutional remedies such as copyleft and Creative Commons licensing, built upon the paradigm of copyright customisation.

2-CAM-L-ESPIONXS-N-gal.jpg imageWhy buy the James Bond Stealth Camera from Thinkgeek - you know, the one that looks like a Zippo lighter - when you could get "The Spy" L'espion XS Digital Still Camera from Teletronics, Inc. ? Sure, it's twice the size, but it's only half the price! And besides, little spy gadgets are out! Giant, oversized comedy versions of real products with hidden cameras inside are in! Government psi-ops programs from around the world have discovered that there is no better way to capture uncomfortable, sidelong glances from targets of espionage than to place nine-foot toasters in conspicuous spots in their kitchens.

"Honey, did you... this?"

"What, dear? Oh, the car-sized toaster, no I thought... Do we have enough butter?"

"Well, there's a barrel full on the counter, but I think it's staring at me."

Disposable Digital Camera

Disposable Digital Camera 08/19/2004 08:17 AM

A disposable digital camera enters the market at $19.99: I couldn't find any information on how many pictures it holds, but $20 is is steep for disposable anything.

Pure Digital makes the world's first truly digital one-time-use camera. It has been on the market for more than a year but is slated to go prime time Monday when CVS, the nation's largest drugstore chain, puts it on its shelves. The Disney World resorts and Longs Drugs will be selling it later this year as well.

Pure Digital is a $19.99 digital camera, with a color preview screen and the ability to delete pictures. After you bring it in for processing, you get a free picture CD along with your prints.

Sanyo VPC-C3 Digital Media Camera 01/04/2005 09:01 AM

sanyo_vpcc4.jpg imageIf you're wondering how Sanyo can cram an 8-megapixel sensor into this new VPC-C4 camera, I can tell you: cheating. It's really just a 4-megapixel unit which can use interpolation to upscale the resolution of the shots. That's a not a bad thing, really, but it will provide results far different than those from a true 8-megapixel camera.

The VPC-C4 shares the form factor and much of the feature set of its predecessor, the Fisher FVD-C1 and other Xacti models, although it is improved in almost every way. It still uses just an SD card for storage, for better and for worse.
