I've certainly thought about things which, with the benefit of hindsight, I would have done differently.  I was never comfortable with having the topic name as the text content of the <topic> element and I've no idea why I did it, there are other bugbears in there too.

I'd also like to give more thought as to how ENT feeds can be supported by topic map resources in real applications.  At the moment we don't publish XTM or XFML maps out of K-Collector but we could (I used to publish XFML from liveTopics but those files got big!)

Lastly I would really like to make a push for ENT support in other applications.  It seems a shame to me that, more than a year on, no other applications seem to have picked up on the benefits topic based aggregation offer to users.

We've writt en about Magnatunes and the Creative Commons a few times before, so yet another article on Magnatunes and the Creative Commons isn't all that interesting. However, this one makes a very good point which is worth repeating. The article asks, if people can get their music for free, why would they bother paying for CDs. The response, which Magnatunes founder basically tells them, is that they're asking the wrong question. People are already downloading music for free, and thus, the recording industry needs to figure out a way to adjust to that reality. The original question (what happens if people can get their music for free?) is like asking "but, what happens to buggy makers when automobiles are around?" The answer seems obvious to everyone, except those involved in the recording industry: they adapt or die. The recording industry is so focused on what they want to happen, that they've missed what's actually happening. The article also suggests that, so far, Magnatunes is doing quite well, and has the potential to be a viable longterm business - based on the idea of giving away music as a promotional good.

As reported by iPodLounge and MacDailyNews, a Taiwanese company has introduced a blatant rip-off of Apple's iPod shuffle -- the Luxpro Super shuffle. The device has been seen on display at the CeBIT conference in Germany where its name, look, and marketing brazenly mimics Apple's new flash-based wonder.

Adam Penenberg is on a roll. After pointing out that the NY Times is missi ng out on the internet due to its registration system, and then admitti ng to contributing to the dirty data in most registration databases, he's now suggesting this may be an even bigger scandal waiting to happen. There have been a bunch of stories over the past few weeks concerning newspapers admitting to over-stating their circulation numbers. The problem with this, of course, is that advertisers buy print ads based, in part, on circulation and demographics. If the circulation is wrong, they've been sold something under false terms. On the web, it's that demographics part that's the problem. With all that dirty data, will sites need to admit to advertisers that the demographic info they're selling is contaminated? While many sites insist that there isn't that much dirty data, it's increasingly looking like they're trying to play down a serious problem. Just as advertisers are asking for refunds for bogus circulation data for print newspapers, how long will it be until online advertisers ask for refunds on bogus web demographic information?

J Moore and others have done for the ongoing genocide in Sudan something similar to what I did for SARS in its infancy. In May they started a group blog, Passion of the Present and have been posting news about the situation in Darfur, with links for more information, daily. The site, Passion of the Present, is a great resource for learning about what it happening in the Sudan, learning about efforts to prevent the ongoing genocide, and suggestions for what people can do to try and stop it. If you haven't seen it, check it out, link to it, and write about it. In case you haven't heard of Darfur, as the Mercy Corps home page says: it is the worst humanitarian crisis in the world today. According to the United Nations, some 2 million people are in desperate need of food and humanitarian aid, and the U.S. Agency for International Development estimates 350,000 people could die in coming months from starvation and disease. But this humanitarian crisis is not the result of natural forces. It is the result of a deliberate campaign by the leaders of the Sudan to destroy the people of Darfur. So far, the campaign looks like it will be successful. It is, as the US House and Senate voted tonight to declare, Genocide. This is not a Democratic or Republican issue, nor a conservative or liberal, issue. A people is being exterminated like termites by their government. Until recently, the world has just watched and made "naughty naughty" noises. Unless the world steps in, hundreds of thousands, maybe even millions, of people will die. For those interested in the details, Human Rights Watch recently published a lengthy report on the crisis in Darfur. If you prefer a more impressionistic view, the NYT recently had a first person account of a visit to the refugee camps. A small sample: Two weeks after Colin L. Powell and Kofi Annan visited this part of Sudan in the hope that the glare of diplomatic shame might arrest a human crisis, conditions are still miserable. Days after the American secretary of state and the United Nations secretary general ended their tour, witnesses said, gunmen stormed a girls' school in the desert region of Darfur, chained a group of students together and set the building on fire. Finland has a thing for mushrooms because, I suppose, they grow pretty well here and they are plentiful this time of year. The first time I visited Helsinki, I fell in love with the Lauttasaari water tower because I thought it looked like an alien space ship or mushroom that had an eerie blue glow at night. The water towers in Finland frequently resemble mushrooms or other fanciful shapes, but the Lauttasaari space mushroom remains my favourite.

On one of the first grocery shopping trips I noted a wide array of mushrooms in the produce section and Jarkko pointed out the false morels that he said were deadly unless cooked properly [I will add here that there is a marvelous Nordic and Russian languages food glossary as well as a very beautifully done Finnish/Russian collection of recipes on the same website]. This, of course, was noted next to the harmless looking fungi, but only in Finnish. I suppose that I was shocked to think that anything in the grocery might actually be deadly, especially for some city kid like me who wouldn't know my ass from a poisonous mushroom if let into the woods on my own. My German mother loved to drag us out into the woods to hunt for morels as well as for blackberries to make into jams. The only problem with this was that if you didn't put at least 3 rubberbands/elastics around your sleeves and pant legs and wear gloves on your hands and plastic bags over your socks, you'd be in agony for a week or more due to the dreaded fuckingus chiggerius. These guys are invisible and invite 5000 of their closest friends to dine on your digested flesh, they make mosquitos look good. My choice whether to forage in the woods with the flesh eaters vs. shopping in the grocery in later years was pretty easy.

I also immediately thought of the liability insurance and lawsuits in the US arising from all the deaths of people who couldn't be bothered to read the warning signs next to them. Perhaps this is passive Darwinism in Finland at work since kids here are trained in the art of identifying mushrooms and berries, even the Latin taxonomic names, from birth so the unsuspecting foreigners who go to the shop and think they look yummy and eat them raw, get removed from the gene pool. I wonder how many cases of death by toxic mushroom happen every year. The woolly milkcap above, a.k.a. Lactarius torminosus, is toxic if not parboiled before eating. I have to admit that its peach colour with furry texture wouldn't lead me to pick it and eat it without the onset of starvation. I think I'll stick with shopping in the grocery and eating only those things that I recognize and am sure won't kill me. :)

I've decided to work with B&W film a bit more since I actually prefer it to colour film but the cost of developing it is mysteriously double the cost of developing other films. So, I'm going to start developing the film myself and use my cheap negative scanner for displaying them on the net. The equipment needed is actually pretty simple and the instructions from Ilford make it seem very hard to fuck up. I've always wanted to try developing film so why not? Hey, I'm a chemist, I should be able to manage this...I think. The first citation is from 1851 but I'm pretty sure the native Americans had a few choice words for them as well. It's interesting to note that the false belief that it 'burrows into the skin' remains even in the recent DARE definition.
