stories about Michael Moore "admitting" that his campaign to tell
people about Disney's last-minute refusal to carry his new anti-Bush
movie, Farenheit 911, is a "publicity stunt." Moore convincingly
rebuts this on his site
"Michael Moore has known for a year that we will not distribute this
movie, so this is not news." Yes, that is what I thought, too, except
Disney kept sending us all that money to make the movie. Miramax said
there was no problem. I got the idea that everything was fine.
"It is not in the best interests of our company to distribute a
partisan political film that may offend some of our customers." Hmmm.
Disney doesn't distribute work that has partisan politics? Disney
distributes and syndicates the Sean Hannity radio show every day? I
get to listen to Rush Limbaugh every day on Disney-owned WABC. I also
seem to remember that Disney distributed a very partisan political
movie during a Congressional election year, 1998—a film called
The Big One… by, um… ME!

massive "cyber-crime sweep." There's just one problem:
it's not much of
a sweep at all. Really, they seem to have just taken a bunch of
cases -- many of which have been made public before, and bunched them
all together in a press announcement. That's not a sweep, that's a
pat on the back for doing what you've been doing. So, while it's good
that they're trying to stop various online scams, it's hard to see how
this qualifies as a sweep when most of the cases were completely
separate and were done at different times over the last few months.

a referee? The question has profound implications for cryptography, in
which the need to nominate and monitor a trusted third party (the
referee in a cryptographic transaction) is a major pain in the ass --
this is the basis for the assertion that Trusted Computing systems
will enable P2P games and distributed computation projects to proceed
without cheating. This paper demonstrates some of the ways that we can
dispense with a referee and rely on math to keep everyone honest.
Mental card games are played without a trusted party and without
cards. It is well known
that the problem of mental card games can be solved in principle. But
the schemes known so
far are too messy to be used in practice. Only for the mental poker
game a suitable solution
is known [Cr'ep 87] that achieves security against player coalition
and complete confidentiality
of a player's strategy. Here, we present a general-purpose scheme
that may be used as basic
toolbox for straight-forward implementations of card games.
We present a data structure for cards and decks that is secure
against player coalitions
and enables standard operations like picking up a card, opening it,
and (re-)mixing stacks.
Futhermore, we introduce tools for special operations like inserting
a card into the deck,
splitting the deck, parting the game. The correctness of all
operations is testified by zeroknowledge
proofs.

Whenever another batch of millions of credit card numbers is
compromised, as happened again recently, the same reactions
predictably ensue. Security experts climb out of the woodwork
offering
interviews on how to harden computers and networks. Payment
processors acknowledge

ishandling of records. But nobody talks about reducing the attack
surface area so that when systems are breached, and when procedures
aren't properly followed, the consequences are far less severe.

A terrifc time sink that is just a notch above completely pointless
to make you think that the time might not be completely wasted is the
mental_floss quiz and
factoid library. It's surprising the amount of useless information
you can recall on demand but have trouble remembering what you had for
lunch yesterday. mental_floss
magazine would appear to be the USA Today of trivia magazines and part
of the growing fad of publishing bound collections of trivia like Schott
's Original Miscellany. The Freudian
Slippers they sell on their site are pretty cute and unusual
though. :)

Art
& Psychosis Some have suggested that there is a
link
between creativity and mental illness (MI), and others
equivocate
a little. One way or another, whether called Outsider,
Transgressive or... (?) art is art and it seems the art from this
community has greater potential (IMO) from an emotional standpoint
then the majority that comes out of art school.

My take on Zen is even more down to earth. To me, Zen is just
a tool to remove
mental wedgies. Just as brushing your teeth regularly keeps
your teeth healthy
and smelling fresh, practicing zazen regularly removes mental
debris stuck in your
mind before they could infest and grow into something more
menacing.
Zen doesn't deliver truth or meaning of life, just a more
comfortable perspective,
a product created out of necessity by those who suffered enough to
shave their heads
over thousands of years ago. It won't help you if you
are crazy though
just as you can't brush your teeth if you can't hold a
toothbrush. That's what
shrinks are for. It will help you if your mind is tangled
into a ball of mess
by your own doing.
Thank goodness Zen masters don't charge like doctors do.
