Upgrading MT
03/11/2003 01:22 AMAlright, I've waited long enough. After reading the changelog, I've
decided to make the jump from MT 2.21 to 2.63. I hope this goes
smoothly....

08/15/2004 07:36 PMah, the joys of upgrading
ah, the joys of upgrading
02/01/2005 09:53 PMEmbiggened by the success I had installing Debian Sarge on my
desktop machine, I upgraded to Movable Type 3.14 from 2.661
today.
So far, the upgrade has been mostly painless, but I have
encountered a few headaches, which I may go into another time. I'm
glad that I exported my entire blog before I started, that's for
sure.
It looks like the comments have vanished all the way back until
December, and I don't know if they're even working right now, but I've
been here for hours, and now it's time for dinner. I kinda hate
computers right now.
If anyone notices anything strange, post a comment (if you
can) or drop me an e-mail, if you don't mind.
Update: Comments don't work. They time out for me, and I
hear via e-mail from a lot of WWdN readers that they are encountering
various errors that sound MT-Blacklist related.
I'd love to sit here for another few hours and figure it out, but
I'm tired, my back is sore, and I have an audition tomorrow. I'll try
to fix it later this week if I get some time.
Other than this incredibly annoying problem (which is probably my
fault, like I forgot to set some stupid file to 755 or something) and
a massive slowdown (which is probably server-related) the upgrade
looks great. I especially like how 3.14 handles plugins.
So if you're having problems commenting, I know. No need to e-mail
about it. However, if you're an MT user, and you've had any problems
like this upgrading, I'd love to hear how you got around it.
Oh, if you're looking for actual weblog content, I
recorded an audioblog on Friday called "Wanting . . . ".
Update the second: Comments are making it through, because
MT-Blacklist (2.04b) is e-mailing them to me, which is weird because I
didn't configure it to force moderation of new comments . . . but even
when I approve them, they're still not showing up. Maybe it's a
template thing.
Tell you what, I've learned a whole lot about MT because of this
little snag . . . sort of how I learned a whole lot about recompiling
a kernel when my machine puked recently.
So to review — things breaking: bad. Learning stuff while you
fix things: good.
Update the last: I converted my database from Berkeley db to
MySQL, and everything seems to be magically working. Cool!
The conversion was 100% painless. I edited two lines of mt.cfg
(with vim, of course) and ran a perl script to do the conversion. I
have about sixteen billion entries and comments and stuff, though, so
it took about three hours to convert . . . but I just sat here at my
desk and watched the update scroll by while I worked on my
audition.
By the way, this pilot I'm reading for today is the best pilot I've
seen in ages. Maybe five years or so (I use five, six, and nine years
as benchmarks, because that's how long I've been married, lived in
this house, and known Anne, respectively).
Update the last, for reals this time: Got back from the
audition to find a blog positively overflowing with spam. Tried to
login to MTBL, discovered that since I switched to the new database,
MTBL thinks I have an invalid username. D'oh! Until I get that worked
out, I've turned on a MT feature which will only allow comments from
people who are registered Typekey users. It's free, it's not
that big a hassle, and it could be a week or more before I finally
work out all these issues . . . so if you'd like to post a comment,
get yourself an account, just like my typekey
profile whydontcha.

Upgrading to Firefox?
02/15/2004 02:14 AMI've been debating about upgrading from Firebird to Firefox, the new
Mozilla based browser, but have seen enough problem reports to decide
to hold off until after this week's trip to Colorado. Plus, I'm not
looking forward to reinstalling all my extensions -- 26 at last count.
And the notice on the official Firebird extensions site, During
periods of heavy use, the extensions are taken offline to help
maintain a healthy, responsive server. Please check back later! For
now, please use Extension Room. seems especially clueless. I'd be
curious to hear what other Firebird users' upgrade experiences have
been....

moved. ;-)

the whole point of Firebird / Firefox is the extensions. I also don't
understand why Ben Goodger and the other developers are so opposed to
the Tab Browser Extensions feature set? I understand that they have
some problems with how the features are implemented, but to reject
including or creating a better extension for some of the most popular
features of Firebird / Firefox is nuts. I'd be curious to hear what
other Firebird users' upgrade experiences have been....

A lesson in upgrading hardware
06/17/2004 05:02 AMThe other day, I got a note from a longtime reader (I won't reveal
their name as it might be embarrassing for them) about a hardware
upgrade to a NetWare server. In a large network, with many servers,
this is a fairly straightforward task. But in a single-server network,
such as a small business network, the process can be fraught with
danger.

Supercomputer Upgrading to Xserve
01/27/2004 04:07 PMReuters reports that Virginia Tech is upgrading its Power Mac G5-based
supercomputer to Xserve G5s. “By moving to the thinner servers, the
supercomputer will consume less power and generate less heat, said
Srinidhi Varadarajan, assistant professor of computer science, college
of engineering, at Virginia Tech. ‘It cuts the system’s size down by a
factor of three,’ Varadarajan said. ‘The new system will take much
less power and generate less heat and free up space.’” [Jan 27]

When I told my friend David I was upgrading to Panther, he
asked "why?". Good question. Mostly, it was for the better Finder
interface, but also because many people reported that 10.3 felt
faster. This
benchmark site confirms that 10.3 is a bit faster in most areas.
BTW, the new Finder interface (with the sidebar and Exposé)
really is quite spiffy. Maybe not $129 spiffy, but much better than
the Old Way. And, to my taste, better than any of the
Finder-replacement applications that I had tried over the last
year.

Firefox 0.9x has some great new
extensions that make it worth the pain
of upgrading
08/12/2004 04:39 AMI'm a cautious upgrader, always happy to learn from the experiences of
others, and let them take the first arrows. I've been a Firefox user
for over a year now, since it was called Phoenix, and my experience
has been that the Firefox team is aggressive about releasing software
at the same time as they are making deep changes to it. Also, they are
not as solicitous of extension writers and users as I would like, as
I've publicly tangled horns with Ben Goodger about in the past. As a
result, and because I use Firefox as my main browser, I've been
cautious about each upgrade of Firefox, and have been happily chugging
along for months with Firebird 0.7 on the my desktop machine, and
Firefox 0.8 on my laptop. Even the older versions of Firefox/Firebird
are much better and safer browsers than Internet Explorer. Three weeks
ago I finally upgraded to Firefox 0.92, and this week I upgraded to
Firefox 0.93. While I did run into a few snags getting my data over to
the new profiles, it was worth it. Firefox 0.9x is considerably faster
than the earlier versions of Firefox. It feels snappy, like I have to
hurry to keep up with it. And there are some really nice new
extensions that are only available for Firefox 0.9+ that add
significantly more functionality than was possible before. My
favorites include: Slogger, an awesome (although strangely named --
how about SuperSaver?) extension written by Ken Schutte that allows
one to keep a log of the sites that you have visited, and save the
pages as you go along. It is like having Furl built into your browser.
All I need is to do is find a full text indexing and searching program
(more on that later, but suggestions welcome), and I'll be able to get
rid of Surfsaver and MyBase, two formerly useful programs I purchased
whose authors seem to be stuck in "Internet Explorer only"
land. Sage, an improved version of the already good Firefox RSS Reader
Panel. Sage is a very good RSS reader under active development that
runs inside Firefox. It supports custom stylesheets, and Technorati
and Feedster search engine integration. It suits my reading style a
lot better than Nick Bradbury's well-reviewed Feed Demon that I beta
tested, and unlike Feed Demon, it is open source -- anyone can improve
on it. I wonder...
