More on the 22 Megapixel Sinar Camera
Back
06/15/2004 06:54 AMRemember that 22-megapixel Sinar camera back from yesterday? Reader
Jason Ozolins explains what makes peltier cooling on large CCDs so
useful:
I think you'll find that the Peltier cooler on the
Sinar camera back is not used to dissipate lots of internally
generated heat (typical "leet overcloxor" use), but to keep the CCD
sensor cold, which increases the signal to noise ratio, and allows
them to get that incredible 14 usable bits of resolution per colour
component.
It's been done with CCDs since the 1980s by astronomers; back then,
making a 200Kpixel CCD was a hugely expensive proposition, so you
might as well spend a few thousand more cooling the thing to wring the
absolute most information possible out of its images.

Developed for Sinar by
Kodak, the new Sinarback 54 M is a new pro-level camera back that
captures with an impressive 22 megapixel sensor with 14-bit color
depth. I didn't realize high-end sensors generated a lot of heat
during operation, but apparently the Sinarback dumps enough that it
has an integrated Peltier cooler to enable it to be continuously used.
No idea on price; let's say 'spendy' for now. (Thanks,
Lorenz!)

16MB of internal storage, which isn't going to get you very far as a

really going to provide high-quality anything, but for $230 or
so it might be a nice thing to throw in a bag and have with you just

03/17/2005 03:51 AM
Motorola has announced a CDMA version of the massively
popular V3 RAZR, which means either Sprint or Verizon users should be
expecting the phone at some point in the near future. Engadget played
with the new model at CTIA and noticed it has a 1-megapixel camera,
instead of the GSM RAZR's skimpy VGA sensor, which is good news for
late adopters, I guess. Sadly, none of the new Motorola phones are
quite as impressive as the RAZR. I was really hoping the SLVR models,
as thin as they are, were thinner.

Taking The Camera Out Of The Camera

Taking The Camera Out Of The Camera
Phone
11/04/2003 07:06 PMWe've had a lot of stories in the last six months or so about
shortsighted companies deciding to simply ban camera phones outright.
In the past, I wondered if such rules would have an
impact
a> on mobile phone sales, but I didn't expect the carriers to jump on
this topic so quickly. Put me in the same surprised boat as Alan
Reiter to hear that carriers are convincing mobile phone handset
makers to
offer
multiple versions of their phones: one with a camera and the other
without. I really thought that with only a few companies overreacting
and missing the point about camera phones, it would blow over, and a
decade from now we'd be laughing at silly companies banning camera
phones. At this rate, that might not be true. This is going to be a
huge waste of money. Designing a new phone will take some money, and
will create a phone that offers less value to the customer (and less
opportunity for revenue for the carrier). However as camera phones
begin to find more acceptance in the marketplace, people are going to
get angry when their boss tells them the expensive phone they just
bought can't be brought into the office. They're not going to want to
buy the version without the camera if part of the reason they're
upgrading is for the camera in the first place. This is a (costly)
over reaction to a technology that will do nothing to stop the real
problem (theft of corporate secrets or invasion of privacy), but will
cost lots of money and anger many people.

adds PictBridge comparability (for easy one-button transfer direct
from camera to printer or portable hard drive). The A85 also ships
with a 32MB Compact Flash card, which is a nice step up from the usual
16MB card most cameras are bundled with. It's about time we start

right out of the box.

defining feature of the new DSLR is a 12.4-megapixel CMOS sensor that
can shoot up to five frames per second at its highest resolution, but
can also be bumped down to 6.8-megapixel to increase its framerate to
8 per second. In addition, Nikon has updated their Wi-Fi transmitter
for the camera; the WT-2 has both 802.11b/g support and "Capture

LG Electronics is
providing a pair of 3.24-megapixel camera phones to SK Telecom (the
LG-SD350) and KTF (the LG-KP2500) which use a mechanical shutter
instead of a software technique to improve image quality. Also
interesting is the fact that the handsets are clamshells, instead of
candy bar phones -- the last 3-megapixel phone we saw, the Samsung
SPH-2300, has a more traditional camera shape, although it has an
optical zoom, as well. I would hazard a guess that the new LG phones
do not (although these days, it's hard to tell).
Meanwhile, some of the phones in the US are starting to get
1-megapixel sensors. Wowsers!
