Portagame is reporting that the new version of the GBA Movie Player (not the one from Nintendo, but a third-party one) is now not only thinner, but also allows you to play emulated games from ROMs, be they legal homebrews or less-than-legal warez copies. It's only $25 at Lik-Sang, and I almost ordered one to try it out, but then was struck by my Lik-Sang curse - my shopping cart was literally at $150 before I was out of the Nintendo section and on to the Playstation one, so I had to close the whole window and pretend it never happened. If you've got stronger resistance to Lik-Sang's importy goodness, you might give it a try.

Oh, and the main reason to get the GBA movie player is that you can convert DVDs or whatever to the format, copy them to CF cards, and watch movies on the go. It's a much better option than Nintendo's sanctioned offering that limits what movies you can watch.

Yesterday we noted that the MPAA and movie theater owners were whini ng about how much people coming in an taping movies was hurting their business. The obvious response, we pointed out, is to recognize that going to the movies is a social experience. It's not just about the content (though, that is important), but the overall experience. If they improved that, then people would want to go -- even if they could score the same movie off the internet or a cheap DVD bought off the street. While the folks in Hollywood refuse to entertain this idea, someone (anonymously) in the comments to that story pointed to an article in China noting that this is exactly what Chinese movie theaters have done. After years of declining attendance, they finally shaped up and made going to the movies cool again. They improved the overall experience, putting in better equipment and more comfortable seats. They improved the sound and the lighting as well. It sounds like they also made some theaters to be more like bars, to help attract young adults away from traditional bars. Yet the supposedly "creative" movie people in Hollywood insist "nothing can be done" to get people into the theater.

I'm not sure what this means, but Microsoft is dumping Intel and switching processors in its next-generation Xbox. Apparently, Microsoft wanted to get in on the action, although most think the company is simply picking the PowerPC platform. This means the end of people turning hacked Xboxes into cheap Linux computers — something Microsoft detests. Now we can turn them into cheap Macs, I guess!

Remember what it was like on the day of the school play? We had rehearsed and rehearsed, then the dress rehearsal, then the big day. I remember lying in bed in the morning so incredibly excited. That day had a special quality no other day had. Finally the day I had anticipated for so long -- it was here! After this nothing would be the same. Today has that feel to me. The house that's so empty, still feels like my house, its emptiness feels like a betrayal, by me, of it. That looms large, I think because I'm still in it. I had enough years to explore every nook and cranny that I cared to explore. I wanted more adventure. Later today, around noon, I'll drive to Reno for the first leg of my cross-country drive. No more rehearsals, today it's the real thing.
