Shuttle Athlon 64 XPC: SN95G5
08/11/2004 09:58 AM
I don't know if it's been
officially announced or not, but a new Shuttle XPC small form factor
PC has shown up on the Euro version of Shuttle's site, dumping plenty
of details about the SN95G5. The new aluminum barebones system uses
Nvidia's nForce 3 Ultra chipset (meaning it's for Athlon 64 CPUs), the
custom "ICE" heatpipe for low-noise cooling, Serial ATA and more
(basically it's v v hot and will be v v fast).
Looking over the site I can't imagine it's a leak - some
non-English reviews are going up today - but it doesn't look like
anything has been announced in the US market yet. Reader Kristian
Norland quoted a price of around $575 just for the unit, though -
that's about twice as much as previous XPC cases from Shuttle have
retailed for in the US. If anyone would care to qualify that, I'd
appreciate it.

Mac - Power + x86?
06/05/2005 11:19 PMCNET has set the Internet abuzz by reporting that Apple is going to
jump from Power to x86 silicon. I think it’s believable, porting
the software doesn’t seem like that big a deal. Here’s
a personal sidelight: Last year I was chatting with a very
senior IBM person that I’d just met, who smirked at my PowerBook and
said “You know, we make more money on every one of those than Apple
does.” Remember, he was real senior and we’d just met. Those
kinds of stories are for sure going to get back to Apple and they’re
going to be real irritating. Look at it this way: once Apple makes the
first big step away from Power, if they don’t like Intel’s
attitude or Intel’s performance or Intel’s pricing, they can walk
across the street to AMD. Or for that matter back to IBM, who might
have become a little more humble and hungry. [Update: Several
people have written to point out that the IBM person was probably
wrong, since the G4 in the PowerBooks is made by Motorola/Freescale,
not IBM. But I think the point about attitude stands.]
