Gizmodo Editorial Retraction

Gizmodo Editorial Retraction 06/24/2004 09:47 AM

It has been pointed out to us in yesterday's story, "Bluetake BT400 GII Bluetooth Headset Review," we missed an obvious opportunity to reference the Japanese/American sexual practice, "bukkake." Our apologies. In reprinted editions of Gizmodo the headline will now read, "Bluetake Headset Drenches Face With Dripping Bluetooth Radio."

Gizmodo Buzz Index: Blu-Ray Vs. HD-DVD 09/23/2004 09:01 AM

GBI_01.gif imageGizmodo Buzz Index: The most accurate graphs since cavemen first scratched pie charts into the walls of French caves. The upcoming high-definition format war is heating up, with Sony and company backing the Blu-Ray format (Sony confirmed yesterday - to no one's surprise - that the Playstation 3 would in fact use Blu-Ray discs), while NEC and Toshiba (and Microsoft?) is pushing the competeting HD-DVD standard. There's not a clear winner yet - the standards are just dipping a toe in the market at the moment - but for now, it looks like Blu-Ray is winning the GBI by a large margin. HD-DVD really needs a major product backing it now. How about Xbox 2?

Update: Reader Damian Roskill makes a good point that both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are planning to use Microsoft's hi-def codec, so Big M is (rightly) hedging its bets at the moments. In a way, that makes the format choice of the Xbox 2 even more interesting.

Gizmodo Year in Review: March

Gizmodo Year in Review: March 12/31/2004 04:40 PM

What a year it's been in gadgetry! Just 12 short months ago, I was blissfully sleeping in, rising only to attend state-mandated skill focus classes. Yet your unwavering appetite for plastic-clad consumer gear pressed me into service, like a fireman who ignores his high score in Bubble Bobble to rescue a burning baby, or the food engineer who developed Wendy's Wild Mountain Spicy Chicken sandwich to address America's flavor cravings. As we prepare ourselves for next week's electronics orgy of CES, let us take a moment to reflect on the highs and lows of our shiny love affair together, month by month, as we pull out notable and favorite posts from the last 3,500 some-odd articles from this year's Gizmodo.

In April, Sony announced its intentions to produce a hard disk-based music player. At the time, we didn't know it would be awful.

I also got sort of upset when Gametrac changed the name of their still-unreleased handheld gaming system to Gizmondo. I also maybe implied they helped child molesters find children to touch.

It was a month of personal development for me, as I learned that perpetual motion is actually impossible, even for the Chinese.

GIzmodo Japan: AU by KDDI Sweets 03/29/2005 01:56 PM

sweets_1.jpgI've gone on and on about the great work that KDDI's AU is doing in the design department (see the AU Design Project), but you know, they've also become quite good at going after certain key demographics, and it's not hard to see what they're trying to do with their new Sweets line, featuring their patented "friendly design." Going head-to-head with Docomo's Lechiffon, the Sweets phones come in 3 appropriately named colors: Cassis Mousse (pink), Vanilla Beans (white), and Mango Pudding (orange). You can also adorn them with an assortment of case coverings. Kawaii!!!

Gizmodo has posted a screamingly funny review/commentary of a new automated circumcision device:
I'm a penis slicer luddite, I know, but no, for real, no. So why do the people that make SmartKlamp think that -- when I wouldn't let a robot, which can maneuver with mathematical precision, touch me -- I would use a Bris-O-Matic on my or my progeny's spurters? Is there a market need here? Are scapel-wielding doctors and rabbis not fast enough to get the job done? Is there a worldwide circumcision shortage?

They're calling it a hybrid communicator, something that integrates a mobile phone with PDA features in a PDA-like form factor -- it's about the size of a typical Palm Pilot. Although it will be making an appearance at the upcoming Expo 2005 in Aichi, Japan, this is probably the first chance you'll get to play around with one them. Oh, and getting the demonstration girls to help you figure out how to use them is a definite bonus.

Gizmodo Year in Review: June

Gizmodo Year in Review: June 12/31/2004 04:40 PM

June brought the first cellphone worm for Nokia Series 60 phones, a minor threat but a story that will likely be huge in 2005, as more malicious variants appear. We also learned about the $6,700 power cord, and I had to prevent myself from commiting suicide at the news.

Sony mentions plans for a PSP/Phone hybrid, although nothing comes of it (yet). Comdex dies. Girls pee while standing. Sidekick II appears (then breaks my heart).

We get the world's first information about the iPod Your BMW system, making us an actual news site for almost 24 hours. The phone known as the Treo Ace appears, later released as the Treo 650.

Well, Hewlett Packard - you may know them as HP - has thrown out a free 20GB HP iPod to Gizmodo readers, and rather than trying to convince you all to share it nicely, we've decided to give it to just one of you. Gizmodo Year in Review: July 12/31/2004 04:40 PM

July was when we knew we had really come into our own, as a story about titanium breast implants temporarily put us in the top spot for Google's results for the term 'titties.' Mom could not have been more proud. I also write our most cringe-worthy story about the SmartKlamp circumcision tool—and that's just from the puns.

We just got word from our man on the ground in Austin at SXSW (codename: COCKPARTS STOLED), that Gizmodo has been selected by voters in the 2005 Bloggie Awards as the winner of the 'Best Computers or Technology Weblog.' You guys are making us get a little bit weepy, which is bad for our circuits.

Congratulations to our brothers and sisters as well, as Defamer wins two Bloggies, including the very much deserved 'Best New Weblog' (the man makes an art of the buggery metaphor) and Wonkette brings home the 'Best Weblog About Politics' award, where the award was immediately offered a book deal.

Gizmodo Exclusive: iPod Your BMW Secrets
Revealed

Gizmodo Exclusive: iPod Your BMW Secrets
Revealed
06/17/2004 11:21 AM

bmw_itunes.jpg imageGizmodo has been given the details of Apple and BMW's new 'iPod Your BMW' campaign by one of our favorite kinds of tipsters, the kind that likes to remain anonymous. Here are the details.

First of all, most BMWs on the road won't be able to use the BMW iPod connection kit. Not only does the kit only work with 2002 or later 3 Series, X3 SAVs, or Z4 Roadsters, any car with optional built-in Navigation system, cassette deck, satellite radio, or CD change won't be able to use it, presumably because of the lack of dash space for the digital readout and because the auxiliary audio wiring is already taken up. So unless you've got the stock Standard or Premium sound (and the right car), you're pretty much out of luck -- unless you're buying new, then knock yourself out.

Get the rest of the details after the jump.

2_LM616_a.jpg imageAlthough the controller itself looks sort of janky, the Hip Gear XB-Comm Bluetooth Wireless Controller & Headset has a cool trick. Even though the headset itself is wired, it connects to the controller, which then uses Bluetooth to communicate back to the Xbox itself, allowing you to play Xbox Live and scream at your idiot friends essentially wire-free. Now maybe somebody will release a Bluetooth headset that connects wireless to the controller that then uses a different frequency to connect to the Xbox.

I've been looking for the ideal Bluetooth mouse almost as long as I've had my PowerBook G4. Unfortunately this isn't it. I chose the Belkin bluetooth mouse for its price and number of buttons, and because Microsoft's Bluetooth IntelliMouse isn't compatible with Macs.

The Belkin mouse is fairly large, but is very comfortable to use if you're right-handed. If you have a computer with Bluetooth built in, you won't need to use any adapter with it, which makes it more convenient than regular cordless mice.

bluesoleilhub.jpgTrustedReviews shows us MSI's Bluetooth Star Hub, a combination USB 2.0 hub and Bluetooth unit that's rather stylish while including some easy-to-use software for tracking your myriad Bluetooth devices. Called BlueSoleil, the software from IVT Corporation makes adding and managing BT devices a simple affair. The device supports up to 7 Bluetooth devices simultaneously and includes three USB ports. The only concern that TrustedReviews had was its flickering blue LED which was something of an annoyance. It sells for roughly $50.
