I don't mind sharing Internet access but
what about the files on my computers?
02/17/2004 12:58 PMHi, i have just bought a wireless router and pc card to use at home
(my laptop and stationary). I had heard about War chalking so did a
search to see how safe it was to use this WLAN. To be honest, i am
scared of installing it now. I absolutely don't mind my neighbours
being able to connect to the internet through my WLAN, actually I
think I might even go and put a letter through theri letter box
informing them about it, but before i do i just want to clear a couple
of things up: -- Just because they can access the Internet through
my WLAN, can they see all the files on my computer. The thing is that
I have 3 computers at home and I still want them to be able to share
files. I don't think any of my neighbours are seriel hackers but hey,
if the info is staring you in them in the face they just might be
tempted to look. If i am honest, i think i would. -- Will this
drastically slow down my internet connection? Thanks guys, i am
just a newby to the WLAN world so please gentle :-

Is Verizon Limiting WiFi Access To Only
Registered Computers?
08/12/2004 01:28 PMWhile companies like Speakeasy continue to win customers by telling
people they can do whatever they want with the broadband connection
into the home, it looks like Verizon may be going in the other
direction. An article in the NY Times suggests that Verizon is
rolling out a new system that
limits
WiFi to only "registered" computers. Unfortunately, the article
isn't clear at all, and the issue gets confused because the writer,
who was blocked, knows she was using a neighbor's WiFi who was
actually connected via SBC. The way the article is written, it sounds
like she thought Verizon was somehow getting in the way and blocking
her SBC borrowing, when it's pretty obvious that she just picked up
the signal from someone else's Verizon-connected WiFi. The more
interesting question, though, is whether or not Verizon really is
requiring users to "register" every computer they want to log on to an
account. If they are, it's a ridiculous and backwards thinking
policy. While there's nothing wrong with keeping those you don't want
off your WiFi, shouldn't it be up to the person paying for the
connection? All Verizon has done is made it much more difficult for
its own customers to use WiFi in a useful way. There are plenty of
situations where there are perfectly good reasons to open up your WiFi
to a "non-registered" computer (someone is visiting and wants to use
their computer, you buy another computer, you bring home a work
laptop, etc.), and Verizon has just made that much more difficult.
Also, why should Verizon need to know how many computers I have
accessing the connection? They're just selling the connection. All
the more reason to go with a more customer friendly broadband ISP.

09/17/2004 04:44 AMThanks
c e 3 2 0 from our
BPN forum for this scoop.
The Microsoft Download Centre has been updated with some graphical
improvements on both the search, listings and item pages. Crucially in
the new look download centre many application downloads are now being
flagged with a "Genuine Users Symbol" Clicking the link
takes you off to read about the new validation system:
"The validation process also determines if you have activated
your copy of Windows. If you have not activated Windows, you will be
asked to enter the 25-character product key printed on the Certificate
of Authenticity (COA) you received with your PC or software
purchase.
Windows Activation is not required. You may access genuine Windows
downloads with either an activated Windows client, or by using a
Windows services activation key. Activation is, however, the quickest
and easiest way to receive genuine Windows downloads from the Download
Centre. Activation is also the best way to let Microsoft know that you
are a Windows Genuine Advantage customer, and that you are ready to
receive the service and support you that expect and deserve from
Microsoft. Read more about the Windows activation
process."
The document implies that is checking product activation, something
only applicable to Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. So for it to
still be present on other Microsoft operating systems implies that
it's also checking keys as well. Although that is pure speculation on
my part. The checker is an ActiveX control and is not mandatory to
complete the download process.

Family Of Man Who Came Up With Googol
Demanding A Piece Of Google
05/16/2004 04:34 PMStunning. Someone should write a book about the amazing things people
(who don't work at Google) have done in their attempts to cash in on
the insane amount of greed that seems to grip people when it comes to
the upcoming Google IPO. There's already been a scam of someone
selling
fake pre-IPO Google shares who convinced a number of Wall Street
insiders and big company execs to shell out. Now, however, we have
the descendants of the man who came up with the term "googol" (on
which Google
based their
name) claiming that
Google is
unfairly profiting off of their intellectual property. No,
seriously. They haven't yet taken legal action, but are trying to
persuade Google that they deserve pre-IPO shares in the company. They
make it out as if this is them being
nice - and suggesting that
it's Google's
ethical obligation to give them shares, or they
may need to sue. It shouldn't be at all surprising to find out that
the descendant leading this charge is a Silicon Valley "compensation
specialist." She complains that she wrote the company in 1988 (I
assume this is a typo, as the company was founded in 1998) and they
didn't write back - which she attributes to them either being busy or
arrogant. I think it's fair to attribute this latest move by
this family to
greed.

The United States Education secretary stated
that students have increased access to information technology, but
would like to see
greater pedagogical use of it. Rod Paige remarked that
"Education is the only business still debating the usefulness of
technology... Schools remain unchanged for the most part despite
numerous reforms and increased investments in computers."
Nine in 10 children between age 5 and 17 use computers, and even
higher numbers of online teenagers use the Internet for school-related
work, according to the report sent to Congress. The largest group of
new users of the Internet from 2000 to 2002 were kids age 2 to
5.

Computers That Jam
Computers That Jam
08/17/2004 01:29 PMWhile many musical purists dislike electronic music for a variety of
reasons, one big thing is the "programmed" feel to it. However, the
latest software is trying something different: it will
let
the computer jam with a real musician. The software takes the
music the live musician plays, and tries to riff off what's actually
being played. It's not clear how
good it is, but realizing
that computers are only getting faster, it's only going to get better.
Some will still question how well a piece of software will be able to
improvise compared to human musicians, but it may not be long before
your favorite jam band adds in some computerized solos.
