Parrot Forth

Parrot Forth 10/28/2003 11:08 PM
Or, "Fifth", I suppose, since it's not quite Forth. As I said earlier, I'm working on Parrot's Forth implementation. It was originally written by Jeff Goff, and the core (what I consider most of the tough bits) is done and has been working for ages, just nobody noticed. The plan (subject to change if it doesn't pan out) is to use Parrot as the core engine for the language the big Work App uses. (The current engine is old and has a number of issues, not the least of which is a really primitive syntax and a simple integrated ISAM...

PHP & Parrot (PDF)

PHP & Parrot (PDF) 10/28/2003 11:08 PM
Here is the PHP-Con Closing Keynote by Sterling Hughes and Thies Arntzen on running PHP on Parrot. Parrot is a virtual machine used to efficiently execute bytecode for interpreted languages. Parrot will be the target platform to which Perl 6 code is compiled. From their slides: Parrot is FAST! Generating a Mandelbrot fractal – PHP, 2.4 seconds – PHP-Hacked, 1.2 seconds – Parrot without JIT, 0.5 seconds – Parrot with JIT (Intel), 0.08 seconds I presume that PHP-Hacked is the patched PHP that Sterling and Thies released in August. I have been a sceptic about Perl 6 because it has taken so long, but this is impressive stuff.

Parrot advances

Parrot advances 10/28/2003 11:08 PM
Or at least exploitation of advances. Parrot's had the facilities in it to call native functions for quite some time (months, possibly upwards of a year) but we've really not used it any--it's just not solved any real problems for folks doing parrot development. Well, since I'm looking at parrot as a target for production work, I've started using it. At the moment, as part of the parrot repository, there are interface files for ncurses (base and form lib) and PostgreSQL. There's an ncurses version of life in the examples/assembly directory as well, if you want to play around with...

Why parrot in production?

Why parrot in production? 04/19/2004 07:06 PM
A good question, and hopefully this is a good answer. This is a response, of sorts, to some of the feedback generated by the Parrot compiler article. (And yep, it's likely that only one of the core parrot guys could write the article, which is why I did--now everyone's got a good chance at writing compilers for parrot :) The compiler article didn't really get into why my work project's targeting parrot, just that it was doing so. No big surprise, since the opening bits were really meant as a way to draw people into the article as well as...

Python vs Parrot

Python vs Parrot 12/17/2004 06:34 PM
In many ways, it seems like Python and Parrot are from different planets. In Python, the general approach seems to be to reduce everything possible to a canonical form as early as possible, and then deal with everything consistently. In Parrot, the general approach seems to be to leave everything in its original form as long as possible, and then deal with everything separately. ...

Note that this is not the final state, just the state we're in and will be for the 0.1.0 release. At the moment you can: Create a class Subclass a class Have multiple parents for a class Have attributes1 for a class Instantiate objects of a class Call methods on an object with hierarchy searching What doesn't work: Adding attributes to a class that's been subclassed Adding parents to a class...

Writing a parrot compiler, part 2

Writing a parrot compiler, part 2 05/03/2004 01:37 PM
No, it's not done, but I'm starting in on it. The original one got sufficient of whatever O'Reilly wants from OnLamp articles to warrant a second, so... Since there's still some (though not a whole lot) of time before I start in, this'd be a good time to weigh in with suggestions on what should be in the article. I figure on at least control flow (since, y'know, being able to do if statements is awfully nice) and maybe subroutines, but beyond that it's up in the air. If there's a definite want of something, add a comment....

Amber for Parrot 0.2.1 (Default branch) 06/05/2005 11:22 PM
Amber for Parrot is an object-oriented scripting language for the Parrot virtual machine. It combines the traditional advantages of scripting languages with support for software correctness and large-scale software engineering. Amber for Parrot has syntax and semantics somewhere between those of Eiffel and Ruby.

Jon Udell: Extreme design versus extreme
programming

Jon Udell: Extreme design versus extreme
programming
06/18/2002 08:16 AM
I've just returned from the What's Next conference in Brattleboro, Vermont, where I gave a pair of talks (one on web services, one on application servers). The keynote speaker for the day was Alan Cooper, designer of Visual Basic, author of several books, and founder of a company that specializes in interaction design.

Cooper's view is that the kinds of disasters that have always plagued the industry -- most recently, the catastrophic outcomes of many CRM (customer relationship management) systems -- are a result neither of poor strategy, nor of poor engineering, but of a failure to properly coordinate the two. The missing piece in his view is product planning and design, done according to a methodology that Cooper has devised and that his company practices. This methodology aligns itself with Colonel John Boyd's OODA (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act) loop, fashionable in military circles.

Roy Disney resigns from Disney, slams
Eisner
12/02/2003 01:43 AM
Roy Disney has resigned from the Disney Board of Directors, and has sent a scathing email to Michael Eisner explaining, in exorciating detail, exactly why he's leaving the company his uncle founded.
1. The failure to bring back ABC Prime Time from the ratings abyss it has been in for years and your inability to program successfully the ABC Family Channel. Both of these failures have had, and I believe will continue to have, significant adverse impact on shareholder value.

2. Your consistent micro-management of everyone around you with the resulting loss of morale throughout the Company.

3. The timidity of your investments in our theme park business. At Disney's California Adventure, Paris and now in Hong Kong, you have tried to build parks "on the cheap" and they show it and the attendance figures reflect it.
