USATODAY.com - Key voters in Ohio don't like and don't trust many of the TV ads that President Bush and Sen. John Kerry have spent more than $300 million to air this year. That's the basic lesson to be drawn from testing of political ads and interviews of voters conducted by USA TODAY.

New Nokias: Nokia 7280, Nokia 7270,
Nokia 7260
09/09/2004 09:00 AM

NOKIA_7280.jpg imageOkay, so Nokia just dropped three phones onto us, and they're pretty crazy, and by 'crazy' I mean 'sort of ugly.' I have to cop to sort of liking the Tron-style and the asymetrical design - the one round corner, one square corner 'new Nokia' look - but I have a feeling I'll be in the minority. Would it kill them to just release a nice, silver phone that you could take home to mom?

Anyway, here's the breakdown, and I'll probably go after this post in a couple of waves. The one pictured here is the Nokia 7280, which you might notice doesn't have a keypad. That's because Nokia designed it to be "sleek," "sexy," and "edgy." (I'm not joking.)

More pictures of the new phones and links after the jump.

headset_gps_nkoi.jpg imageAnd last but not least (if you're reading from the bottom up; otherwise, welcome to the Nokia posts!) are these two new peripherals from Nokia, a new Nokia Wireless Headset HS-11W headset with a 6 hour talk time, and this Nokia Wireless GPS Module LD-1W that also connects to your phone or PDA via Bluetooth (the GPS may not actually be new - it seems sort of familiar - but I don't exactly recall hearing about it before). The GPS unit uses the same battery and charge plug as most Nokia phones, so you can use your existing charge to go along with it.

The headset should be out later this year, while the GPS unit isn't scheduled until Q1 2005.

Two Thumbs Up for Wikipedia

Two Thumbs Up for Wikipedia 07/16/2004 09:50 AM

I, ROBOT / ** (PG-13): Wikipedia got a mention in Roger Ebert's review of "I, Robot," posted this morning.

Asimov's robot stories were often based on robots that got themselves hopelessly entangled in logical contradictions involving the laws. According to the invaluable Wikipedia encyclopedia on the Web, Harlan Ellison and Asimov collaborated in the 1970s on an "I, Robot" screenplay, which, the good doctor said, would produce "the first really adult, complex, worthwhile science fiction movie ever made."

Beautiful. On another note, the company at the center of this movie is called "U.S. Robotics." Was it called that in the book, or did they borrow the name from the modem company? Which came first?

Thumbs Up for Firefox 04/23/2004 04:31 PM

Will Mozilla Fly?: Very positive article on Firefox from a U.K. IT magazine.

It took me a whole five minutes to decide to ditch Internet Explorer and switch to Firefox. Why? The learning curve is about 5 minutes — at most. FireFox is simpler to use. Configuring it is easy and would probably be easy for just about any PC user. You are not faced with the typical Microsoft feature-bloat.

Mozilla Firefox has a better layout and a larger web page area. It loads all your Internet Explorer 'favorites' when you install it on MS Windows and blocks pop-ups completely (there is an option to allow them on specific sites).

I've actually gone back to the full Mozilla suite due to less than perfect IMAP support in Thunderbird.

iRiver IFP-790T - 2 Thumbs down!

iRiver IFP-790T - 2 Thumbs down! 12/24/2004 12:46 PM

I am using the iRiver IFP-790T as a backup recording device when recording the Geek News Central Podcast. Of the 18 shows produced we lost 1 due to a PC crash and I vowed that would never happen again. So as I record the show on the PC the iRiver MP3 player which doubles as a voice recorder is my failsafe mechanism.

Today on the Daily Source Code with Adam Curry he mentioned he owns nearly the same device, and drew some of the same conclusions I did. The thing sucks. It's a great recorder but you have to use iRiver's proprietary interface that has DRM management to get files on and off it. Windows does not recognize it as a external drive and it records in some proprietary format.

I really wonder who these companies have on staff testing their products, don't they have a clue on how the real world works. I guess that is why the Apple iPod is as popular. Someone just needs to figure out how to record at a high bit rate on the iPod. [iRiver]< /p>

Nokia 1110 and Nokia 1600 06/06/2005 12:09 AM

nokia_1600.jpgNokia announced their 1600 and 1110 models, meant to be affordable, easy-to-use and light on frills. Nokia is targeting developing nations with these models and they look well enough to suit their purpose as part of a plan to eventually offer mobile service for just $5 a month. They both feature talk times of over 5 hours and the Nokia 1600 has a 65k color screen while the Nokia 1110 uses a sunlight-friendly inverted black and white display. They're expected to retail for $105 and $85, respectively, and will be available later this year.

E-Voting Machines Get Official Thumbs
Down
04/22/2004 06:53 PM

  • AP: California Panel: Don't use Diebold touch-screen voting machines . By an 8-0 vote, the state's Voting Systems and Procedures Panel recommended that Shelley cease the use of the machines, saying that Texas-based Diebold has performed poorly in California and its machines malfunctioned in the state's March 2 primary election, turning away many voters in San Diego County.
  • Okay, now we're getting somewhere. The evidence has been building steadily against Diebold, and now an important panel has advised the state to hold an irresponsible company's feet to the fire. But there's a much bigger issue to consider: Are any of the voting-machine companies' black boxes to be trusted? The answer is No. Maybe these things work right, but maybe they don't. We can't afford to take this kind of a chance with our elections. California -- and every other state -- should insist that these machines not be used until they have a voter-verifiable paper trail. That's the only way to restore even a tiny bit of trust to a broken system. Better yet, we should move to systems like the one developed by the Open Voting Consortium, which is developing a system that is a) open; b) runs on cheap hardware; and c) can be verified to prevent improper election results from fraud or coding mistakes. Let's fix this mess, soon. Meanwhile, a cheer to the California panel that has told Diebold what needed to be said.
