piPod_Intro.jpg imageAttention iPod-owning pizza lovers in New York: Your prayers have been answered. There is finally an iPod-based guide to New York pizzerias, the piPod. Available free from SliceNy, the reference tool fits in the Notes folder and focusses on Manhattan and Brooklyn, but I sort of get the impression that they might be willing to take some submissions from dough-eaters in Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx. There's even within the rating system a way to tell if the oven is coal-fired or not.

Flash-based iPod days away

Flash-based iPod days away 01/06/2005 02:35 AM
Thanks to jerry for the heads up in BPN.

Apple's long-rumored flash-based iPod will be introduced at Macworld Expo in 1GB and likely 2GB versions, Apple enthusiast website Think Secret has confirmed. Various details regarding the device have emerged days before Apple CEO Steve Jobs is set to unveil the tiny music player during his keynote address.

Rapidly falling flash prices have enabled Apple to buy 1GB modules from Samsung at a relatively low cost, sources report, which in turn will allow Apple to sell the device for $149. Sources have also suggested that a 2GB version, packing two tiny 1GB flash modules, may sell for $199.

The device is currently being manufactured by Taiwain-based Asustek, which Apple brought on towards the end of the summer as a second ODM for manufacturing iPods. Sources say the flash-based iPod will be powered by a chipset from SigmaTel and that it will feature a screen that is the same width as the iPod mini's but two lines shorter.

Not certain at this point is what sort of touch-based interface the device will use. Some sources have suggested that device will forgo Apple's ClickWheel, featured on the iPod mini and 4G iPod, and will instead have more buttons, like the first generation iPod.

Joe's article yesterday (See The Ether) reminded me of something I bumped into a while back about an artist's display in England called field.

Richard Box, the "Artist in Resident of the Department of Physics at the University of Bristol" assembled a display of 1301 flourescent tubes that are illuminated only by the ambient energy from high-voltage transmission lines.

Robot Dog, One of, Field Use

Robot Dog, One of, Field Use 01/07/2004 01:56 PM
The US Army TACOM group is spending $2.25 million on research projects aimed at building robot dogs that can carry a soldier's field equipment and keep up with the soldier over any terrain. Right now, each man has to carry up to 100 pounds of ammunition, food, and equipment. The long term challenge is making a four legged robot that can move as fast and quietly as a man over any terrain. The immediate challenge is making a four legged robot big enough for the job that doesn't fall over and doesn't need an internal combustion engine for power. For more, see Noah Shachtman's interesting article on the program in Wired.

As I announced, we focused on people who are maintaining nodes in the distributed podcasting community directory in our current round of testing. Nick Starr who maintains the AudioBlogs category has already managed a successful conversion. For the most, people were editing their OPML by hand, now that they have an editor whose native format is OPML, the job gets easier and the quality of the output goes up.

The Search Field

The Search Field 07/01/2004 05:22 AM

One of the new features added to WebCore is an HTML wrapper for the Cocoa NSSearchField, which means you will be able to use this control in your Web pages and Dashboard widgets.

The syntax is:

<input type="search">

The incremental attribute can be used to control whether or not the search is performed as you type.

The placeholder attribute can be used to set the greyed placeholder text in the control.

The autosave attribute allows you to specify an autosave name for your search results in the dropdown. What's cool about the autosave is that it's global, which means that two Web sites could put up a search field with an autosave name of google and then they would share the search results. (Since the actual result values are not accessible to the page there is no privacy violation.)

The results attribute allows you to specify how many results should be displayed in the dropdown.

The search DOM event fires at the precise time the search should be performed and obeys the heuristic for the control, so you don't have to trap key and click events at all. You can use the onsearch attribute on the control to respond when the search happens.

When submitted, the search control will save the submitted result, so that the user can select it from the dropdown when returning to the page.

In addition the search control is a subclass of NSTextField and also supports all of the functionality of the text input element, so you can make it readonly, set a maxlength, etc.

The search control will also even degrade gracefully in other browsers, since they won't recognize the unknown type and so will just use a text field instead.

If you have the 1.3 preview for Panther or are playing with Tiger, you can try this feature out. It works in both.

119 students who failed courses get group email: 119 kids are failing out of the University of Kansas, and now they all know each other.

The students were notified earlier this week that they were in jeopardy of having their financial aid revoked. The e-mail sent Monday by the Office of Student Financial Aid asked for additional information to determine if they were still eligible for aid.

The e-mail address list included the names of all 119 students, with the result that everyone on it could see the names of all the others.
