Radical Breeze released on Thursday Illuminati on 1.0, a utility that indexes and searches through the contents of any disc, whether it's located online or offline. The software allows you to avoid loading multiple CDs in your Mac when looking for a file; it can tell you which disc it's on once the contents have been added to its index. It can search based on file name, path, type, creator code or file size. Illumination 1.0 requires Mac OS X v10.3 and sells for US$19 on its own or as part of the Radical Breeze 7 Pack, which also features DiscBlaze, Macabinet, DoThisNow, RadicalPhoto, RadicalSqueeze and Zephyr.

WSJ Online Feeds and FeedDemon 1.1.03

WSJ Online Feeds and FeedDemon 1.1.03 07/22/2004 02:45 PM

If you're a subscriber to The Wall Street Journal Online, you'll be happy to hear that a set of WSJ Online feeds is now available. If you're not a subscriber, you can still access the feeds - but they'll show only headlines as opposed to full content (hat tip to Kevin H. Stecyk for letting me know about these feeds).

When I first viewed the WSJ feeds in FeedDemon, I discovered that the wrong titles were showing in the channel bar. At first I thought there must be a problem with the feeds themselves, but it turns out the problem was with FeedDemon. So, I've posted a new build of FeedDemon which fixes this bug - just visit the download page to get it. As always, existing users should install the new build directly on top of the current build. All of your existing information (including your serial number) will be retained.

Note: The version of this build is 1.1.03, which is displayed during the install and in FeedDemon's "About" box. I'll update the "Check for new version" page shortly to reflect the new release.

RSS, which stands for Really Simple Syndication, are feeds that allow users to view a site's content without visiting that site directly. The Daily News Web site is now offering RSS feeds for users who wish to take advantage of them. Once you have an RSS reader in place, it will alert you to new content in the Daily News RSS feeds that you have copy-and-pasted into your reader. This will be added to my presentation Bots, Blogs and News Aggregators.

Flawed Online Searches Cost Businesses $31 Billion Last Year
http://www.emarke ter.com/Article.aspx?1002877

Amid the excitement with search advertising revenue growth and the upcoming Google IPO, a study finds US executives dissatisfied with the performance of online search engines.
According to a survey released by FIND/SVP, 84% of business executives feel that Web searches -- using the generally consumer-centric search engines now available --take longer than they should due to poor results. It is estimated that the loss of productive time using search engines to conduct online research cost businesses $31 billion last year. The study found that that not only are 71% of business executives frustrated with consumer search engines, 74% are not even confident that the results are reliable. However, despite this lack of confidence, 67% stated it would be difficult or impossible to do their jobs without Web-based search tools. Business professionals also question the reliability of search information, with 52% only "somewhat confident" that results originate from credible sources.

Interesting article and it just happens that FIND/SVP announces their "new" business search engine this week!! Hmmmm......

To Make Online News Look Bad?

Is Online Registration For News A Ploy
To Make Online News Look Bad?
09/17/2004 02:31 PM
These days, I very rarely agree with anything written by John C. Dvorak, who seems to be spending his time not really understanding what's happening in technology. However, his latest column has an interesting theory. We've been talking a lot about how many newspapers have a backwar ds thinking policy requiring registration just to read the same AP and Reuters stories everyone else has. The public claim is that they're doing this to give their advertisers more data about their visitors, but the amount of dirty data that goes into these databases suggests that doesn't make much sense -- and could get them in legal trouble. Others point out that online editions are really doing this to get email for the sake of selling their mailing lists to marketing spammers, which does make some sense, though isn't a particularly well thought-out strategy for long term success. Dvorak's take, however, is that newspapers are doing this to keep people out on purpose. The idea is that newspapers want to play down their online operations, to show that their paper editions are still much more important. He believes they don't want the online editions to be profitable, as that would mean serious changes for their business. If true, this is an incredibly stupid position, basically trying to convince themselves that news isn't moving online when it really is. It's even worse than just not believing what's happening -- it's working to screw up the data they use themselves in figuring out what's happening. Honestly, though, this seems unlikely. It would involve too much thought. It seems, more likely, that the push towards online registration is from newspapers who haven't really thought the issues through, but who think this will somehow pay off.

In this section, we'll look at the two major alternatives for parsing feeds, MagpieRSS and the Ultraliberal Feed Parser. Both parsers are libraries, both convert feeds into native data structures and neither cares whether a feed is RSS 1.0, RSS 2.0 or Atom. By O'Reilly. 0603

AP - Many online readers must complete registration forms with various kinds of personal data before seeing their virtual newspaper. The requirement has irked some readers and privacy advocates, led to the creation of Web sites to foil the system, and could be failing to provide the solid demographic information the system was intended to capture.

People Getting More Comfortable With
Online News

People Getting More Comfortable With
Online News
06/02/2004 02:41 AM
It appears, not surprisingly, that a very large percentage of Americans use the internet to read news - however, many claim that it hasn't subtracted from their use of other sources of news. Of course, the most popular "news" to check online is the weather - which some may not really consider news. Still, many people do check their national news online, though they tend to stick to traditional sources (such as their ISP's home page or their local newspaper's website). Again, this shouldn't be that surprising. There is a reason the mainstream is called the mainstream. What will be more interesting, however, is how these numbers continue to change over time, and whether or not readers become more comfortable with non-traditional sources (or if their own traditional sources start including more information from other non-traditional sources) and how that changes our perception of the news.
