It's beginning to sound like it wasn't so much the EFF's persuasive words that convinc ed DirecTV to stop suing people just for owning smartcard equipment. Just one day after that announcement was made, a judge has told the satellite TV company that they can no longer sue just for possession if they have no proof that the person actually did anything wrong with the equipment. It certainly took the courts long enough to come to that conclusion, causing problems for plenty of people who were wrongfully sued. In the meantime, this ruling makes you think that DirecTV already knew it was coming when they made their little "promise" to the EFF yesterday.

Oracle wins right to pursue rival: PeopleSoft may have played their last hand:

Ellison and Henley wasted no time in firing off a letter to PeopleSoft's board, requesting a meeting to hammer out a deal, potentially the largest tech merger since Hewlett-Packard and Compaq Computer in 2002.

We started covering this a long time ago. Back then (14 months ago), I said:

t's worth saying that when this story broke, I thought it was just another egotistical Larry Ellison thing — something he did off the top of his head just for giggles, ego, and to shake up the competition. He's something of a dashing playboy-type guy, and this would fit.

But more and more, it seems that he's not kidding and he's going to take PeopleSoft in whatever way he can. Money is on his side, time is on his side, and I believe the only thing that will stop the deal are the anti-trust considerations.

Looks like I was pretty close to the truth.
