The problem, as they saw it, was the complexity of modern software—especially operating systems and productivity suites. “Twenty, or even ten, years ago, software was actually reliable,” one software developer admitted. That was because the cryptic operating systems on desktop computers at the time (CP/M and MS-DOS) were far smaller and more tightly coded than today's graphical beasts. The software written for bigger machines used to be more reliable, too. Before IBM was forced to “unbundle” its software, computer makers controlled both the program code and the hardware it ran on—and could thus integrate them properly. That was one of the reasons why IBM's mainframes and Digital Equipment's minicomputers had such a reputation for reliability.

Readers had no trouble identifying the two leading culprits. One was the practice of re-using chunks of old software for doing set things. “Over time, code-reuse leads to massively complex and prodigiously huge software programs, full of ‘magic code' that nobody understands or wants to touch,” said another programmer. Analysing such programs was more like archaeology than computer science. “They are full of ‘midden piles' and ‘rock strata' containing artefacts and fossils that once had a clear purpose but whose function is now lost to history.”

What in the World is IceCasting?

“IceCasting is an experiment in MobCasting, an idea that Andy Carvin has been exploring lately. The Illinois Technology Conference for Educators (IL-TCE) will be held in St. Charles from March 1 through March 4 and I thought this might be an interesting way to extend the learning.

Everyone loves attending conferences. There's something about being surrounded by your colleagues and being exposed to new ideas at every turn that really just gets people jazzed up about technology, teaching, and education in general. This blog is a way to capture that feeling and share it with other people. It's a place to capture those ideas that you just can't wait to take back to your school, or make you think differently about the way you're doing things now.

If you experienced something at ICE and want to share it with people, there's two ways that you can do so. Send an email to teach42.icecasting@blogge r.com, and the entire text of the email will be instantly posted here. You can also attach photos to the emails if you'd like to! Today I did two hands-on workshops about blogging at Lincoln Trail Libraries System. Both sessions went very well, and I feel confident we'll see some new library blogs on the block. Best story of the day - one participant was from the Tuscola Public Library. When class started at 9:30 a.m., they didn't have a web site. Now they do.

Other fun things I learned today:

• LTLS has been using Blogger to produce a System Status blog for their online services, including their catalog! I've been trying to get SWAN to do this for a while now, but it's a good reminder for... um... IT staff at MLS. cough cough
   
• The Business & Economics Library at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has an RSS feed!
