World's biggest Devo fan

World's biggest Devo fan 04/09/2005 03:27 PM
Xeni Jardin: Profile of Michael Pilmer, a 38-year-old Devo fanatic whose awesome collection of band memorabilia consists of thousands of items. He's now webmaster for the Devo website. Boing Boing reader (and my old-school pal) Charles O'Donovan says, "This guy used to work for Alienskin Software who make awesome plugins for Photoshop. I met him a few years ago."

Snip from story:

The little white house in Oakwood doesn't look like a shrine. But step through the door and into Michael Pilmer's world. Gaze in awe at the massive autographed poster of Devo above the dining room table, the authentic Devo concert costumes, the Devo pins and shirts and ephemera carefully arrayed throughout the house.

Yes, here in Raleigh, half a block from Oakwood Cemetery, is the planet's biggest collection of artifacts from the band best known for the 1980 hit "Whip It."

"It's the ADD that keeps me going, I guess," says Pilmer, 38, a tall, lanky redhead (it's dyed) in a homemade T-shirt with Mickey Mouse sitting on a toilet. "I'm definitely kind of obsessive, so I just figured I would channel that into one thing."

Samsung Builds World's Biggest OLED TV

Samsung Builds World's Biggest OLED TV 01/05/2005 02:07 PM
Today's technology announcements typically involve smaller and smaller components, computers and other gadgets, but Samsung Latest News about Samsung this week touted the "world's largest" television based on organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology -- a 21-inch flat panel display.

While Samsung has addressed common OLED issues such as power and resolution with an active matrix (AM)-based OLED, analysts emphasized that the 21-inch screen was merely a demonstration and still a long way from the consumer market, where traditional liquid crystal display (LCD) and plasma technology are among the hottest commodities available.

Is It Fair To Ban Computer Use For Those

Is It Fair To Ban Computer Use For Those
Arrested For Computer Crimes?
12/04/2003 02:37 AM
It seems like it's pretty common for anyone arrested for any sort of computer related crime to be "banned" from using computers for a certain period of time. Now, however, some are questioning that ban because computers have become such a necessary part of life for so many people. Security Focus is running an article talking about the case of someone accused of hacking into numerous company networks and defacing some websites. While his trial has not occurred yet, he's been banned from using computers since he was indicted three years ago. His lawyer is now arguing that this violates his constitutional rights, saying that it goes to far in violating his right to free speech.

Jargon: The Biggest Computer Security
Threat

Jargon: The Biggest Computer Security
Threat
04/04/2005 01:54 PM
If you're online these days, computer security problems come in all sorts of flavors including viruses, worms, phishing, trojans, zombies, spyware, malware, adware, DDoS, spam, spim, spit, buffer overflows and many others... and, of course, most people have no clue what most of those mean -- which leads them to (a) freaking out about the insecurity of using computers while (b) having no idea how to really protect themselves. While some may question this particular study, it does make a good point that a lot of the jargon used to describe security threats can sometimes be more confusing for non-techie computer users. What this means, though, is that many less savvy users are simply going to expect their ISP to keep them secure, which may be quite a challenge for ISPs who aren't prepared for that sort of thing.

The World's Hottest Computer Lab

The World's Hottest Computer Lab 05/19/2004 12:03 AM
Half a world away from the calm beauty of Seattle and Puget Sound, there’s a lab where software dreams come true. At Microsoft Research Asia, the drive to succeed is as intense as the traffic that roars by the front door in unbridled, chaotic fury. If Microsoft’s other facilities around the globe seem idyllic, this one, in Beijing, China, is pure street. Nearby high-rises compete with smokestacks for skyline supremacy. Run-down buildings sit next to bustling consumer electronics markets and the Beijing Satellite Manufacturing Factory, where China conducts its spaceflight research. Microsoft’s mantra: work hard to get in the door; work harder to survive; then work even harder because the real work—that of an information technology world leader—is just beginning.

Super Science Fair Projects: Complete Guide to Science Fair Projects, Topics and Experiments
http://www.super-sc ience-fair-projects.com/

Today your teacher announced that your school is going to have a science fair and students are responsible for exhibiting their projects. What do you feel? Enthusiastic? Despondent? Dreadful? Fearful? Excited?" This statement opens the Super Science Fair Projects site. Actually, whether student or parent, science fair projects, while great ways to get students actively involved in learning the scientific method and problem solving, can be tough assignments. This site may help you with one of the hardest parts: coming up with an idea. The site does a great job of walking the visitor through the steps needed to plan and implement a project, from Choosing a Topic, the Scientific Method, and writing the Project Report. There are even tips on displaying your project, rehearsing, winning over judges, and what to expect the day of the fair. This is definitely a great tool to tap into when planning a science fair project.[From The NSDL Scout Report for Math, Engineering, and Technology, Copyright Internet Scout Project 1994-2003. http://scout.wisc.edu/]
