Your New Phone Company Is The Cable
Company?

Your New Phone Company Is The Cable
Company?
05/03/2004 05:18 AM
Cable providers in the US took an early lead in the broadband market, though they've lost a little ground lately due to cut rate prices for DSL from the telcos. However, the cable providers are looking to pull an ace out of their sleeve by promoting their ability to easily provide the coveted "triple play" of voice, video and data through one single company. Many cable providers have been able to do this for a while, but they haven't spent much time promoting their phone service. That's about to change. While the telcos are still struggling to figure out their video strategy (TV over DSL? partner with a satellite provider?), the cable companies are getting ready to heavily promote their VoIP phone plans in conjunction with their TV and broadband connections. They admit that most people still don't know the cable company offers phone service, but they aim to change that soon. Beyond just getting more money out of each subscriber, it also means much less churn for the cable companies, as studies have shown that the likelihood of a customer switching providers drops drastically for each additional service they receive from their provider. While the article doesn't mention much about pricing, it would make sense for the cable companies to cut the prices on the phone service drastically. The additional cost to the companies isn't that high, and undercutting the telcos in their core market has to hurt them. Besides, as the article points out, choosing a phone company is much more of an "emotional" decision than choosing a broadband provider. If the cable companies can win over the emotions of people with very low priced calling plans, they'll more than make up the difference in new customers for their broadband and video services - and the resulting lack of churn.

Diller To Show IAC Is No Travel Company
By Creating IAC's Travel Company
12/22/2004 01:16 AM
Barry Diller has done a good job buying up various online "middleman" companies in a variety of spaces from travel to social networking to dating. However, he says too many people view InterActiveCorp as a travel company and that's making it more difficult to acquire non-travel companies. So, in order to prove that he's not running a travel company... he's going to show them what it means to really run a travel company. That is, he's going to spin off all of IAC's travel properties, including Expedia, Hotwire, TravelNow and Hotels.com, into one company (which he'll still run), and keep all the other properties as IAC. While it may be a good idea to realize the value of those other properties, from the beginning Diller kept talking about the synergies of having all of these properties under the same umbrella. Apparently, those synergies only go so far when the stock price isn't as high as he had hoped.

Querystring Hacking with PHP

Querystring Hacking with PHP 06/05/2005 11:46 PM

PHP and Standards: arg_separator.output: A few months ago, I went ballistic on querystring arguments. I rambled on about how I hate them and go to ridiculous lengths to avoid them. I think I'm somewhat insane in this respect.

Well, I found out today that PHP can be set to parse the querystring differently using the "arg_separator.input" ini setting. You could have it use semi-colons or whatever, and it would correctly parse the querystring into the $_GET array.

However, I can't see a setting to change the key/value separator, which must have to stay the equals sign. Anyone else know how to change that...you know, just so we can make our apps completely non-standard?

Hacking An Election

Hacking An Election 02/10/2004 02:41 AM
Nothing particularly new here if you've been following the whole issue on problems with electronic voting machines, but Salon has a fairly comprehensive piece describing the concerns of those who want to stop current voting machines from being used in elections. It describes some of the not-quite-so-secure techniques Diebold used to "secure" their machines - including leaving the necessary password out in the open. It also talks about how comments in the source code of the Diebold machines make it clear that the engineers knew that parts of the software don't work, and yet it was still used in elections. The responses from those who defend the electronic voting systems are a bit scary, as they basically ignore the point. Instead, they talk about how other voting methods have problems as well, and how difficult or expensive it would be to fix these voting machines. Whoever said democracy was supposed to be cheap? Update: Whoops. A new report says electronic voting machines in North Carolina lost 436 ballots last year.

Hacking Text 05/10/2004 04:21 PM

CNET posts an inter esting New York Times article about a group of European researchers who have found ways to 'un-black' blacked out text in documents like those released by the government in recent months by using a process-of-elimination technique to figure out what words fit under the obscured area.

The researchers showed their software at the conference, called Eurocrypt, by analyzing a presidential briefing memorandum released in April to the commission investigating the Sept. 11 attacks. After analyzing the document, they said they had high confidence the word "Egyptian" had been blacked out in a passage describing the source of an intelligence report stating that Osama Bin Ladin was planning an attack in the United States.

Hacking your Car Stereo 06/17/2005 06:10 PM

16.jpgiPod enthusiast Matt Gilbert has thrown together a nice, cost-efficient hack to get the iPod running directly to a car stereo without having an auxiliary input. He had experienced static and interference when using FM Transmitters or cassette adapters, and this tweak uses a toggle switch and some wire splicing to create a direct line-in into any car stereo.

The total cost of the mod is under $1 (if you already have basic wiring tools and supplies), and it's a great way to ruin your dashboard if you mess up.

AOL Employee Arrested For Selling Email
Addresses To Spammers
06/23/2004 07:00 PM
People have always claimed that AOL often gave out their email addresses to spammers, though many have questioned whether or not that was true. One that that's clear is they make it way too easy for employees of the company to access customer information. A few months ago we wrote about an AOL customer service rep who used the info she had access to in order to insinuate herself into the lives of celebrities who used AOL. The latest is that a 24-year-old engineer at the company has been arrested for selling a database of 92 million AOL user email addresses along with their phone numbers and zip codes. He sold this database to some spammers for about $50,000. How long until a class action suit is filed by AOL customers because the company didn't protect their info?

Is It Fair To Ban Computer Use For Those
Arrested For Computer Crimes?
12/04/2003 02:37 AM
It seems like it's pretty common for anyone arrested for any sort of computer related crime to be "banned" from using computers for a certain period of time. Now, however, some are questioning that ban because computers have become such a necessary part of life for so many people. Security Focus is running an article talking about the case of someone accused of hacking into numerous company networks and defacing some websites. While his trial has not occurred yet, he's been banned from using computers since he was indicted three years ago. His lawyer is now arguing that this violates his constitutional rights, saying that it goes to far in violating his right to free speech.
