Please help democracy in America
12/17/2004 06:40 PM November 2 is right around the corner --> Help get out the vote.
There are lots of different ways to help: Like clothes? Buy a T-shirt
that encourges others to vote. Like to call people? Use non-partisan
VoterCall.Org's website to call a newly registered voter and encorage
him or her to vote for the first time. Like technology? Volunteer for
Tech Watch to make sure that the votes are counted accurately.
Religious? Use the Vote All Your Values website to find voters to call
and see if they need help getting to the polls. Like to travel? Sign
up with MoveOn PAC to go to a swing state and drive voters to the
polls. Don't see anything you like? Want to do something else? See the
list at Volunteer Match. But pick something and do it. Democracy is
more than voting, it is also acting....

America as a One-Party State: The target
is not the Democrats but democracy
itself.
America as a One-Party State: The target
is not the Democrats but democracy
itself.
01/19/2004 01:56 PM America has had periods of single-party dominance before. It
happened under FDR's New Deal, in the Republican 1920s and in the
early 19th-century "Era of Good Feeling." But if President
Bush is re-elected, we will be close to a tipping point of fundamental
change in the political system itself. The United States could become
a nation in which the dominant party rules for a prolonged period,
marginalizes a token opposition and is extremely difficult to dislodge
because democracy itself is rigged. This would be unprecedented in
U.S. history.
In past single-party eras, the majority party
earned its preeminence with broad popular support. Today the
electorate remains closely divided, and actually prefers more
Democratic policy positions than Republican ones. Yet the drift toward
an engineered one-party Republican state has aroused little press
scrutiny or widespread popular protest. America as a One-Party State No Patience For Patience? Blame
Broadband!
No Patience For Patience? Blame
Broadband!
08/30/2004 03:19 PMApparently, the world has less patience these days,
and it's all broadband's fault. Yes, that's right. This always
on, give me answers now, now, now, fast, fast, fast world has meant
that we no longer
enjoy being put on hold by the support staff
to find out why our (oops) broadband connection is down or waiting in
line. Just yesterday, at the supermarket, the guy in front of me, who
just wanted to buy a bag of apples got fed up when the woman at the
front of the line seemed to be having trouble coming up with enough
money. He stormed off in a huff, tossing the bag of apples on an
adjacent counter. Obviously, he must have been one of these crazy,
impatient broadband customers. Somehow, I doubt our growing
impatience has anything to do with the speed of our internet
connection, but the growing element of our life that seems to involve
being on hold or in line just to get the bad service we don't deserve.
