Cable services' status uncertain 10/29/2003 12:11 AM

After the Ninth Circuit's decision last week to deem cable networks telephone services , rather than information, the question of opening cable lines to other providers remains open . The FCC and the National Cable & Telecommunications Association ( NCTA ) will appeal, and the United States Supreme Court may emerge as the final arbiter of cable networks' legal status.

HR Outsourcing: Big companies are making
the shift from in-house to outsourcing
05/31/2004 01:47 PM
According to a new study, the world’s largest companies were more inclined to outsource HR functions in 2003 than in 2002. And if they weren’t outsourcing at the time of the latest survey, most were thinking about it. Another finding: Those who are outsourcing are, for the most part, happy in their choice. However, while outsourcing increased in many areas, such as 401 K plans and call centers, it decreased slightly in recruiting. In this article, MedZilla interviews the survey’s author and reports on its findings. [PRWEB May 28, 2004]

IFD-iV Flash Drives Masquerade as ATA
Hard Drives

IFD-iV Flash Drives Masquerade as ATA
Hard Drives
07/15/2004 08:59 AM

ifd-iv.jpg imageFor embedded computing hackers, mass storage (like hard drives) is often the most frustrating piece of the puzzle, as the fragile and power-hungry spin of the hard drive is usually the last non-solid-state part in the whole deployment. And while most engineers will just use a Compact Flash card, sometimes the only option is an ATA (hard drive) connection; that's where the IFD-iV flash memory parts from IO Data Device Corporation come in. Basically just flash memory drives, the defining feature of the IFD-iVs (besides fairly rugged operating specifications) is that they use the standard ATA connection of a hard drive, meaning they can be deployed in place of hard drives when necessary. Models up to 2GB in capacity will be available for around $2,100 -- maybe we'll just deal with the fragile hard drives instead.

Update: Reader Tom Lee brings up a much cheaper option for hackers on a budget (after the jump.)
