Commentary: Like many readers, I find Microsoft's Get the Facts (GtF) ads repugnant, especially when they appear on sites dedicated to Linux and open source software. I understand that such organizations' editorial and ad sales staffs operate independently, meaning neither side tells the other what content it is or isn't allowed to carry, but I still don't like it. Happily, however, the bogus GtF ads may not be around much longer.

A bushy-tailed morning in the quest for truth : MemeTank and dKosopedia This morning, I wondered - where's the update to (the deceased) Steve Kangas' mighty liberal FAQ ? "Update?", thought I, "Well, this attempt ran out of steam" Then..."Ah, a Wiki !" Then, "well, isn't truth the point ?...shouldn't it be Bipartisan, or multipartisan ?" Daily Kos was just sniffing (May 28th) along that trail, it seemed....partway : "We hope the dKosopedia will become the progressive-political version of the Wikipedia, a political FAQ so to speak" Would the "Dkosopedia" benefit from a less partisan stance ?

But, the MemeTank rocks -with it's bestiary of Liberal/Progressive, Right Wing, and "other" memes and the (MemeTank's) "Meme Development Project....This section is for people who want to invent new memes and try to encourage professional journalists to start using them."

The amazing interstingness of miscellany, specifically Schott's Food and Drink Miscellany has provided me with several hours of pre-sleep delight as I've perused its pages in bed. Last night I discovered that both the loganberry and the boysenberry are not in fact wild berries, but derivatives of raspberries! Beneath the heading, "Epicurean Eponyms," Mr. Schott explains: LOGANBERRY · the sweet purple berry of the raspberry plant Rubus loganobaccus · created by the American judge and experimental horticulturalist James Harvey Logan, who developed the plant (c.1881). Some forty years later the botanist Rudolph Boysen created the hybrid BOYSENBERRY from the loganberry, the raspberry, and the blackberry. No wonder I've never seen a loganberry bush in the wild! I'm loving this little book and all its wonders. Highly recommended for any foodie or food-curious person.

Soon, You May Be Able To Copyright
Facts... If They're In A Database
01/22/2004 03:06 AM
More bad news for those hoping that politicians were finally waking up to how backwards our intellectual property system currently is. In a step further backwards, the House Judiciary committee appro ved a bill granting intellectual property protection to databases - even if the info in the database is publicly available. The bill was supported by big database companies who are afraid that people will come along and copy their databases and resell them. Of course, such things are already covered by intellectual property law - but the firms wanted additional protections that seem to go against the Supreme Court's rulings that say you can't copyright facts. This law will have a tremendous number of unintended consequences - similar to the DMCA. All you need to do, now, to provide extra protection to public facts is put them in a database of some sort. The bill still has a ways to go before it becomes a law, but the fact that it's gotten this far isn't a good sign.

Who Needs Facts When Opinions Can Be
Inserted Instead?

While actual studies looking at the language skills of kids who send instant messages and SMS text messages suggest that there 's no difference in language skills, why should actually looking at the subjects stop those who are worried about the impacts of these communications technologies? The folks over at Reader's Digest -- who built their whole business on the idea of "condensing" things down -- have published a study saying that many parents believe that such messaging technologies harm the vocabulary skills of their kids. Of course, the headline is more inflammatory than reality, because it's still less than half of parents who believe so (a quarter of parents believe such technologies help vocabulary skills). Still, the problem with this study is that it's not studying the actual issue at all. It's studying what parents think is happening, as opposed to what is actually happening. However, for many people that distinction gets lost, and they assume the study actually says something it never did.

Learning Technology: The Myths and Facts by John A Finnis
http://www.itd l.org/Journal/May_04/article07.htm

Abstract
This paper considers some of the major issues in the field of learning technology. It seeks to identify areas in which technology has greatest potential to contribute to the learning process, and also those areas in which the application of technology is inappropriate or detrimental. Issues include the support of different kinds of learner, learning environments, reusability and accessibility. Questions raised include the changing role of learning in the information age, extent to which learning materials may be re-used, and how misunderstandings between various contributors to learning technology projects may be overcome. The paper concludes with a hypothetical example of an effective application of learning technology.
