Google's Privacy Policy

Google's Privacy Policy

Google's Privacy Policy 08/05/2002 10:45 PM

Tara points out that Public Information Resource, as part of their Google Watch project has put up a page about Google's Privacy Policies. They point out that Google's persistent cookie (it expires in 2038) can be used to track Google users. I've refused Google's cookies for a long time for this reason. It's annoying because Google forgets my language and SafeSearch preferences, but since I search Google for so many things I'm especially concerned about my privacy. I wish Google would switch to a cookie that only stored specific preferences, rather than identifying information. I hope Google will respond with the reasons for their current cookie system. [Finally, a note on the weblog format. I feel safe in publishing negative comments like this because I know that most if not all readers check the site periodically, so there's little chance of someone getting incorrect and not seeing the correction.] Interestingly, they point out that Matt Cutts, a Google employee, spent a year at the NSA. Food for conspiracy theorists....

Google's Privacy Problems

Google's Privacy Problems 02/14/2003 02:10 PM
Google Watch: Google as Big Brother, a list of his top ten Google Privacy Problems. My thoughts: The cookie is a serious issue. Google assigns everyone who visits a cookie that uniquely identifies them to Google for all time. There's very few legitimate reasons to do this, and they certainly don't outweigh the harm done. (Google could easily assign a cookie that only contained your preferences and not a personal identifier.) Logging is also an issue. Actions by the current US government make it clear they don't care about privacy, and it's very likely that they've convinced Google to hand over full logs of who is searching for what. I think the bit about hiring spooks is silly, just working at the NSA doesn't ruin you forever. The toolbar asks in bright bold red letters if you really want Google to phone home about every site you visit. Obviously you should answer no if you like your privacy. Google could probably improve things by letting you press a button to look up the PageRank for a page, rather than always doing it automatically. I like the cache copy. Putting stuff on the Internet makes it public; get used to it. I think most people agree the sites penalized by Google deserve it. If you think your site was penalized unfairly, let me know, and I'll spread the word. On the other hand, I think Google should publish their block list and algorithms. Conclusion: Google needs to stop sending the cookie and promise to only store aggregate data, with no connection between users and search terms. This issue was publically raised almost a year ago; that Google still hasn't dealt with it is inexcusable....

WhenU Violates Own Privacy Policy

WhenU Violates Own Privacy Policy 05/27/2004 12:09 PM
??Edelman?s research, detailed here, demonstrated that the transmissions back to WhenU?s servers include the web site URL being visited when a WhenU ad was displayed on the user?s system as well as other data. This seemed to contradict the then-current WhenU privacy policy statement that as ?the user surfs the Internet, URLS visited by the user (i.e., the user?s ?clickstream data?) are NOT transmitted to WhenU.com or any third party server.? And it unquestionably contradicts privacy promises WhenU makes in places where there is at least some chance ?customers? will see them before they are inflicted with the company?s software.?

Windows, WPA2, and Wi-Fi Security

Windows, WPA2, and Wi-Fi Security 06/05/2005 10:56 PM
Brian Livingston has filed an exhaustive article about Windows and Wi-Fi security at Windows Secrets Newsletter: Brian interviewed me for the article, which was entertaining as we sorted out a lot of the issues about WEP and WPA, and his article is an incredibly clear set of the best advice I've seen on the topic. Every Windows user employing Wi-Fi needs to read his article and make sure you've done what he suggests. One of the conclusions I reached while being interviewed by Brian is that WEP truly is dead. There are WEP algorithms in updated firmware that eschew the weak initialization vectors that make it trivial for a cracker with free, simple software to extract a WEP key. But there's no way a consumer could possibly know whether a given device had strong or weak IVs. Further, a single network device with weak IVs makes a WEP-protected network vulnerable. So I have to agree with Brian: there's no reliable way for the average person to use WEP and not have vulnerability that can exploited in seconds to minutes. If you don't live near anyone else at all, WEP (or no security) may still be viable. Otherwise, WPA or WPA2, and WPA Enterprise or WPA2 Enterprise is even better....

WPA2 Products Pass the Test

WPA2 Products Pass the Test 09/01/2004 01:15 PM
The Wi-Fi Alliance announced today the first set of companies whose products have received WPA2 certification: They include products from Atheros, Broadcom, Cisco, Instant802 Networks, Intel, and Realtek. WPA2 is based on 802.11i and uses Advanced Encryption Standard instead of TKIP. Broadcom and Atheros are both touting their hardware-based solutions. Broadcom says that its existing products have shipped with the chip-based AES engine which means that simple software downloads can upgrade products to comply with WPA2. Both Atheros and Broadcom products will be used by the Wi-Fi Alliance in certifying other WPA2 products....

Key Missing Piece from Microsoft's WPA2
Support: Updated Supplicant

Key Missing Piece from Microsoft's WPA2
Support: Updated Supplicant
06/05/2005 10:56 PM
eWeek reports that WPA2 support under Windows XP SP2 lacks 802.1X supplicant upgrade: Microsoft's WPA2 support should probably have included the four mandatory supplicant secured EAP types required under Wi-Fi Alliance certification standards for WPA2. I say probably because the new secured EAP types were added after the WPA2 certification standard was initially set. What this means in practical terms is that you cannot use 802.1X with anything but EAP-TLS with Microsoft's native supplicant. You'll need third-party software. Microsoft's WPA2 update boils down to just WPA2-PSK (Preshared Key) support for networks that really don't need CCMP keys using AES if they're just going to all share the same key!...

Trouble Setting Up 802.11g Networks

Trouble Setting Up 802.11g Networks 12/19/2003 07:35 PM
Some writers at the Dallas Morning News tried out a couple of 802.11g products and ran into a lot of trouble: This story gives a nice glimpse into the experience of a couple of guys without tons of technical experience trying to set up a network. They first noticed incompatabilities between products that were based on the draft standard and those issued after the final standard. They also struggled with implementing WEP and WPA. In fact, they couldn't implement either when installing D-Link gear. They also couldn't implement D-Link's XtremeG upgrade that boosts speed to 108 Mbps. The Toshiba blue screen of death problem they report could have come from installing the Microsoft Windows XP WPA update on a Toshiba Centrino model. Last time we checked, the Toshiba Centrino wasn't certified to use that update; Intel long ago (May) released a compatibility update to manufacturers for WPA, but each Centrino vendor has to release it separately as part of their driver update package....
