Inside the Xbox 360, Part II: the Xenon
CPU
06/05/2005 10:53 PM

Part I of this series covered Microsoft's vision for dynamic content creation in the next generation of console games. In this article, Part II, we take a closer look at this CPU, codenamed Xenon. We cover the design of its individual parts, and we'll talk about how each part fits with the vision outlined in Part I.

Instead of spending hardware on an instruction window that looks for ILP at run-time, the Xenon instead relies on the programmer to structure the code stream at compile time so that it contains a high level of thread-level parallelism (TLP). In order to take advantage of the high level of TLP that the Xenon expects programmers to have worked into their Xbox 360 applications, the processor groups its large number of execution units into three separate cores, each of which individually contains a relatively small number of execution units. The many parallel threads out of which the programmer has woven the code stream are then scheduled to run on those separate cores.

The architecture of the individual PowerPC processor cores that make up the Xenon is covered in as much detail as is currently possible, and we also pull together what is known about the high-powered, 128-register vector unit that forms the heart of the Xenon's procedural synthesis capabilities.

Leaked docs show the CEA standing up

Leaked docs show the CEA standing up
(finally) to the RIAA
05/24/2004 04:00 PM
The RIAA is arm-twisting the FCC over a "broadcast flag" for digital radio, to keep you from recording and saving digital radio broadcasts. They're trying to get the Consumer Electronics people -- who sold us all out in the digital TV Broadcast Flag fight -- to play along, but this time around, the CEA has grown a spine and is pushing back. JD Lasica wrote a piece for Mindjack on this, but more interesting is the leaked correspondance between the RIAA and the CEA, in which the CEA tears the RIAA a new one over the unbelievable, suicidal stupidity of restricting the ability of end-users to record digital radio signals.
You state that you do not wish to limit the ability of consumers to record over-the-air radio broadcasts. Instead, you apparently want to force them to buy what they have received for free since Fleming and Marconi first made it possible for consumers to hear news and music over the public airwaves. As you know, we have long been concerned about content owners seeking to change the 'play' button on our devices to a 'pay' button.
(Thanks, JD and Donald!)

A 'leaked' schematic detailing the architecture of Microsoft's upcoming Xbox 2 has the web roiling this morning, both from the more-than-respectable trio of 3.5GHz PowerPC processors at the helm as well as debate about the leak's legitimacy. While some have speculated that Xbox Next will be powered by AMD, all...

Government docs on P2P

Government docs on P2P 07/21/2004 04:30 AM
Jeremy sez, "A St. John's University law student created a p2p network allowing users to share government documents. Over 600 court and government documents such as memos, communications and reports can be accessed through the Kazaa, LimeWire and Soulseek p2p networks. The Abu Ghraib prison memos and the Senate Intelligence Committee report on government intelligence leading up to the Iraq War are included. It would be nice to see this collection of useful, informative and sometimes embarrassing documents grow. It might also give Washington more fodder for legal maneuvers against p2p." Builder.com: API Docs with phpDocumentor 09/08/2004 09:14 AM
Thankfully, PHP code is some of the easiest to write (of the web scripting languages I've worked with). Unfortunately, documentating it is just as much of a pain as it is with any other language. And, this Builder.com article puts it well: Developers and documentation are like oil and water - they just don't mix well. Many developers find writing documentation to be a boring waste of time. It's no wonder, then, that most companies hire separate personnel to create technical documentation rather than try to persuade developers and programmers to do it themselves.

Blosxom Plug-in Docs

Blosxom Plug-in Docs 03/11/2003 09:43 AM
After much ado and not a small amount of fiddling and honing over the past couple of evenings, I've a version of Blosxom 2.0b and sample plugins I'm ready to start seeding.

Despite expecting it to be in flux for a while, I wanted the first version of the Blosxom Plugins API to be good enough to provide a nice starting point for discussion and further development.

I've some mild cleanup to do on the beta release and anticipate finishing up and putting out a package Thursday evening.

I spent this evening massaging the zen of Blosxom plug-ins into some decent documentation rather than simply leaving interested parties to muddle through the source. I believe I've done a rather decent job on them, but if you notice anything confusing, missing, or just plain odd, please do let me know. You'll find the docs here.
