NewsFactor - Outbound direct e-mails -- one of the mainstays of marketing automation efforts in the CRM realm -- often disappear into the black hole of Internet service providers' anti-spam filters. Even those that a customer actively has requested can miss the mark due to filtering.

Spammer Complies With CAN-SPAM, Claims
ISPs Should Not Filter His Spam
05/20/2004 07:05 PM
Ronnie Scelson is one of the shortlist of spammers who just seems to love publicity. While many spammers like to hide away, Scelson's always willing to talk. He testified before the Senate Commerce Committee today, claiming that he is now compl ying with CAN-SPAM, but threatened to ignore the law if not enough of his spam messages were getting through filters. He actually has the audacity to complain that now that CAN-SPAM is in effect, ISPs should be required to let his mail through. Maybe the filters are a little to thick around his head and the message isn't getting through to him: the reason his spam is filtered is because people don't want it.

Yahoo Releases Anti-Spam Technique For
Upcoming Standards Battle
05/18/2004 06:16 PM
One thing that you can guarantee in the technology world is that there will never be a shortage of standards battles. While AOL is supporting Sender Policy Framework (SPF) as their way of authenticating email senders, Microsoft is pushing their "caller ID" method of combating spoofed spam and Yahoo has been pushing ahead with their own DomainKeys proposal. Today, Yahoo is making some news by announcing that they're releasing the technology as a standard. A standard for whom? So far, it seems like it's just Yahoo. Are we going to reach a point where our mail servers are going to need to separately check DomainKeys, SPF, email Caller ID, some giant useless "do not spam" database, and twenty other anti-spam systems before they'll be able to forward mail? Is it really a "standard" if everyone has their own?

Aren't unintended consequences wonderful? Now that anti-spam legislation is becoming popular, one result is that spammers aren't wasting time with just spamming mortgage offers and ways to buy Viagra. Instead, now that they realize they're definitely on illegal ground, they're moving more towards malicious attack spam, including phishing attacks and trojan horse attacks. In other words, if they're going to break the law with spam, they figure they might as well go all out.

Report from the spam/anti-spam summit 04/09/2004 04:05 PM
Danny O'Brien has written up one of the first summits between spammers and spam-fighters for the Guardian. It's a great piece.
Surprisingly, no such shootings occur. It's oddly intimate, watching the spammers and the anti-spammers mill around each other like this. It feels like a temporary ceasefire in a vicious war that to most of us seems to be a stalemate...

Over the past year, though, a series of meetings arranged by a trusted figure in the American anti-spam community, Anne Mitchell, have been slowly bringing the two sides together. These mini-conferences, held under the banner of the Institute for Spam and Internet Public Policy, have mostly been between the highest-ranking ISPs - MSN, AOL - and commercial email marketers of the most squeaky clean kind. Initially in secret, these days the meetings are more public.

Anti-Spammers Don't Need CAN-SPAM

Anti-Spammers Don't Need CAN-SPAM 09/25/2004 12:00 AM
While the CAN-SPAM act was meant to stop spam, it obviously hasn't yet. Although it's pretty easy to point out some of CAN-SPAM's flaws, it's perhaps better that some anti-spam activists are actually taking spammers to court -- though mostly citing pre-existing laws regarding false advertising or deception. Armed with these older and easier-to-understand laws, the Informal Coalition of Private Anti-spam Litigants (ICPAL) and the Institute for Spam and Internet Public Policy (ISIPP) have helped some businesses and devout anti-spammers take some sleazy mass emailers to court and win a few sizable monetary judgments. Still, the strategy for these anti-spammers is to remain informal but organized, so that spammers can't retaliate. However, these anti-spammers also say they're not in it for the money, and some have refused to settle out of court on principle. Given that some of the spammers are hard to actually find, much less extract damages from, it looks like these vigilante organizations may remain small and informal until perhaps some bounties are put out on spammers heads.

Billions of 'Phishing' Scam E-Mails Sent
Monthly (Reuters)

Reuters - Fraudulent e-mails designed to dupe Internet users out of their credit card details or bank information topped the three billion mark last month, according to one of the largest spam e-mail filtering companies.

Analysis Of A Phishing Scam

Analysis Of A Phishing Scam 11/14/2003 08:38 PM
Email "phishing" is the popular email scam going around these days, with emails appearing to come from companies you supposedly trust, asking you to provide updated financial information. These scams are pretty sophisticated and are even trickin g relatively savvy users. Now, a security firm has taken some of these phishing emails and done a fairly detailed analysis on them, to determine that a large portion of the emails seem to originate from a single group, and that group appears to be testing out a variety of different scams over time (sometimes including spyware, sometimes just going directly after the victim's bank account). One interesting tactic, which I had not heard about before, is that the URLs they put in the emails (which are usually disguised to look like legitimate URLs - but which are obviously fake if you look carefully) actually redirect users to the actual site for the institution in question, but also throw up a pop-up of their own that asks for your bank account details. I received one of these emails pretending to be from Amazon a few days ago. I didn't click on the link, but did send it off to Amazon who bounced back a form letter. It sounds like these researchers got the form letter treatment as well - but they've done a tremendous amount of research which would probably be very helpful in tracking down who is running this scam.

Scam Busters Just As Bad As Scam
Victims?

Scam Busters Just As Bad As Scam
Victims?
01/19/2004 05:05 AM
An odd article out of South Africa complaining that scam busters are just as bad as scam victims - in that they act in just as predictable a manner. Of course, the scam busters aren't the folks losing money to the scammers, and, in fact, they often are doing a good job to spread news of a scam to protect potential victims. So, I'm a bit confused as to what's so upsetting about people taking it upon themselves to tell others about a scam. Certainly, there are some things that don't deserve to be publicized, but are, due to the intensity of the efforts against them. However, scams are something that clearly should be publicized to limit the negative impact. It seems that the real complaint of the writer isn't so much scam busters, but "fad" busters who complain about people getting hooked on the latest fad. However, fads and scams are two very different things.

Scam Within A Scam Warning

Scam Within A Scam Warning 12/22/2003 07:43 PM
There have been a ton of warnings about so-called "phishing" spam scams - where a very realistic email from a well-known financial firm asks you to confirm the details of your account. Of course, the email isn't real and the scammers just want your account details. They go through all sorts of tricks to hide the fact that the email isn't real, but the latest such phishing scam uses a bit of social engineering. It warns people about such scams, and then says they need to fill out new information to avoid being taken by such a scam. It seems the scammers are trying to get increasingly clever, and it's an interesting social engineering trick to try to get people to let down their guard by first warning them about a scam - and then scamming them anyway.

~WikiSpam by the billions

~WikiSpam by the billions 05/12/2004 10:00 AM
For the past week, someone has been hitting jspwiki.org, adding advertisements to a couple of addresses I am not going to mention here. I figured they were isolated incidents, but... It seems that Dave Johnson of RollerWeblogger has had the same guys on his wiki. I just hope nobody is trying to build a bot to target a specific WikiEngine?. It could be devastating to the open nature of Wikis.

You see, the problem with open systems is that they are easy to abuse. For the most part, manual damage can be controlled thanks to social pressure and sheer volume of good people, but automatical damage, as inflicted by bots may become intolerable. The reason why we have so much email spam these days is because of the wonderful openness of the SMTP, mail transfer protocol. Because it was open, license-free, and easy to implement, it became the killer app of the all-pervasive Internet these days. But openness also has vulnerabilities, and as with anything popular, people are abusing it right now.

I am not worried about people trying to destroy wikis. That would be too easy to protect against. But I am worried about bots that would roam around, and change the text or a link slightly to destroy links to competition, or to add Googlejuice for someone. Would it be possible to notice every single change on your wiki, and check every single outgoing link? Considering that most Wikis don't even provide an RSS or Atom feed it may be difficult to keep track on what is really happening. I have two open Wikis which I administer - and I'm having trouble coping with them already. Especially smaller wikis may be in trouble, as their administration have no tools to combat a dedicated spambot.

It is entirely possible that public Wikis will have to start to protect themselves somehow. I think we should start thinking about technologies that would prevent spambots from destroying an entire subculture, but in a WikiFriendly way. Let's not do what everybody else seems to be doing these days, and sacrifice the one thing that we want to protect.
