The Idea: Five sites that effectively convey information through visuals in ways that would be impossible with words.

ValueMaps
1/ Market Maps: UK Innovation consultant Steve Griffiths at Breakthroo has develop ed a set of interactive maps that show supply chains and customer chains for the telecom market as network charts of the market space.  You can drill down from any of the connecting nodes, or see lists of competitors, or view (in red above) the sustaining and disruptive innovations in each space. Gorgeous, eh?

USIncome
USIncome2
2/ Now That's Power: In 2003 I published the first of the two charts US income above, to show just how skewed US income and wealth really is. Now there's a whole statistical discipline called Econophysics and a conference looking at such curves, and they've produced the second curve above, showing this data plotted logarithmically. They claim the richest 0.1% of the population's income is described by Pareto's Law -- meaning that if you're born into that kind of money, you'll only get richer, no matter what you do. And they claim the poorest 99.9% of the population's income is explained by Boltzman's Law -- describing random movement of gases in an enclosed area, and meaning that even if you've struggled up to the left end of the green curve, you're far more likely to then get poorer than to make it to the 0.1% elite. So much for the American Dream.

simulation
3/ Sim-Anything: Net-Logo, a project of Northwestern University, provides a free downloadable set of models that allow you to perform simulations in just about any imaginable scientific or social science discipline, and more are being added all the time.

goodall
4/ Progressive Video:  Big Picture pro vides free, high-quality downloadable video clips of many of the world's leading progressive voices. Put a face to a name: Jane Goodall (picture above), Naomi Klein, Amory Lovins, Georges Monbiot, Elisabet Sahtouris and dozens more.

SNA
5/ Social Network Analysis: Cleveland consultant Valdis Krebs explains how to analyze and optimize social networks, provides a raft of online articles and example, and has some fun online demos of his software.

Is A Picture Worth 1,024 Words?

Is A Picture Worth 1,024 Words? 04/19/2005 11:07 AM
One of the things we're always interested here at Techdirt are new ways to use technology -- specifically when it comes to the sharing and exchange of information. While there's been a lot of atten tion paid to the online photo space over the past few months, most have just been focused on the recreating a photo album for aesthetic purposes, rather than real information sharing. That's why it's been interesting to play around with Spogger, a new service (and company), launching today, that is much more focused on information sharing through photographs (mainly cameraphones). The idea being that you can often convey a lot of information in a simple photograph, and with the ease of snapping a cameraphone photo and sending it to a site, it's possible to provide near real-time info on just about anything -- from items for sale, to traffic conditions, to the daily lunch specials at the deli down the street. The other thing that is interesting about the service is that, while it does jump on that tagging bandwagon, it also steps away from it with a classification system that lets people propose and vote on the proper classification for images. The problem that's clearly going to come to "tagging," is spam. Tagging, in many ways, is just a slight update on keywords -- which within the search engine world quickly fell victim to spam. However, in putting together a proposal and classification system, it allows for the community to properly organize things as a group -- and keep out the spam. This also isn't a new idea -- but seems to have been lost in the recent fascination with completely open tagging. In this particular case, with Spogger, the risk with the classification system is that different people could feel that the images/information should be classified in different ways (it's all relative, you see...), but with the combination of voting classifications and tags perhaps a happy middle ground is reached. Still, what remains to be seen is how seriously people use imagery for information sharing. Snapshots, historically, are more about aesthetics than pure information sharing -- and while the rise of cameraphones (which both make it easy to take photos anywhere and to share them) makes it easier to use photos for information gathering and sharing, it is still a mental and behavioral change, that not everyone will be willing to make. However, as the lines between the digital and analog worlds merge, we're going to be seeing more innovative uses of technology for gathering and sharing information.

What's a few thousand between friends?

What's a few thousand between friends? 09/05/2004 11:13 AM
<I>(Editor’s note: Michael Simon is currently taking a (much deserved and long overdue) vacation. Consequently, this will be his last post until Monday, Sept. 13. He thanks everyone for reading and apologizes for not personally responding to any notes.)</I> It seems that there are two kinds of Mac fans — those who buy (or want to buy) simply based on aesthetics, and those who honestly weigh form, function and price, and are content to watch from the sidelines if the specs don’t add up. With Apple, price is, and will likely remain one of the principal drawbacks to true mainstream acceptance. To break it down, it seems that Apple’s latest wonder always seems to be priced just out of reach of <I>really</I> affordable. While it may not seem so from first glance, the G5 iMac may very well be the most affordable professional Mac to date. While it certainly won’t pack the punch of a Power Mac (especially since they’ve gone all dual) but the new iMac is no slouch. Like when it was first introduced, the iMac now shares the same processor as its professional counterpart. It took the iMac more than two years to see a G4 chip, but in 1998, the low-end professional model and the iMac shared speeds. Of course, the line between consumer and pro has become much more defined over the years, and it’s interesting to see Apple put a G5 into its consumer model after just a single Power Mac revision. With IBM’s yield troubles, though, it could be a while before the iMac goes much higher (though a 23-inch, 2GHz version <I>would</A> be nice). Right now, a 1.6GHz G5 Power Mac (which was available through the Apple Store for $1,799) just can be had for a little shy of $1,600. The iMac G5, with a 17-inch widescreen monitor, can be yours for $1,299. There are a few pundits out there who insist on comparing the price of the iMacs — which has not changed from its $1299 base in more than six years. While it’s certainly worth noting that the low-end iMac costs the same as it did in 1998, I fail to see how this is a sticking point. And the 20-inch display still sells for $1,299 by itself and the previous 20-inch iMac sells for $2,199. Now, it’s just $1,899 with a bigger hard drive, better graphics card and more RAM potential. Speaking of RAM… what are they thinking?!! How can they expect any self-respecting consumers to run OS X, iMovie and iTunes — not to mention help power a 20-inch display — without <I>at least</I> 512MB of RAM… And then charge another $75 for a simple upgrade? C’mon guys… And Airport and Bluetooth should definitely be standard. (Though here's something you may have not seen: for just $100, the iMac can be configured with a Bluetooth module and an Apple Bluetooth and Mouse. So we’re really talking $2,000 for a full-featured top-of-the line iMac, still cheaper then last month’s model and the same price as the closest <A HREF="http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Stor e/en/-/USD/SY_BrowseCatalog-Start;sid=zIyu7-rDpvOu2Kv462Wk5KXTqSu0L1ng FM4=?CategoryName=cpu_VAIODesktopComputers_WSeries&Dept=cpu_VAIODeskto pComputers">alternative</A>. Plus, it comes with iLife, Quicken, World Book and Panther. While Apple is touting its thinness, the iMac may very well be the most affordable professional computer ever made by Apple, and while creative types across the world busy themselves with their G4 Power Macs, dreaming of an upgrade, perhaps it’s time for Apple to switch itself — from strictly marketing iMacs to consumers, that is.

A thousand monkeys filtering advertising 10/29/2003 12:10 AM
A common thread between the most effective forms of online advertising is the introduction of a hyperlink to a targeted user. In this respect, there is no difference between Google text ads, Orbitz pop-ups, and DoubleClick banner ads: for the advertisement to be effect, the viewer must follow a link. The browser market is ripe for plugin that, like Vipul's Razor, harnesses the efforts of many humans to identify and block unwanted advertisements. Users have proven with the SpamNet that they are willing to flag spam for the greater good, as long as it serves them as well; browsers should provide a mechanism for them to do so. Once the browser detects a community-reported ad, it can automatically obscure it – or remove it completely. This solution is in no way limited to banner ads. When a blog comment is...

I'm about to hit the sack, but current indications are that Bush has won Ohio by a couple of percentage points and thus has been re-elected as President of the United States.

Ohio. Isn't that the state that Diebold president Walden O'Dell promised to deliver to the Republicans?

I don't know if Ohio voters used Diebold machines. If they did, I'm certainly not about to say that the machines were fixed in any way. But the problem with voting machines without a paper trail is that there's no way anyone can be absolutely certain that the election wasn't stolen. In a modern democracy, that just ain't healthy.

The Grand Canyon is only a few thousand

In addition to cutting out scenes of gay events held at National Parks, the US Park service is also selling books that "prove" the Grand Canyon is only a few thousand years old.
This fall, the Park Service also approved a creationist text, 'Grand Canyon: A Different View' for sale in park bookstores and museums. The book by Tom Vail, claims that the Grand Canyon is really only a few thousand years old, developing on a biblical rather than an evolutionary time scale. At the same time, Park Service leadership has blocked publication of guidance for park rangers and other interpretative staff that labeled creationism as lacking any scientific basis."
Here's a quote from the book: "... in the creationist's view, the carving of the Canyon would have taken place when the sedimentary layers were still soft, allowing the catastrophic erosion process to quickly and easily cut through the layers." From Amazon.com: "Author Tom Vail and his wife are the founders of Canyon Ministries, which offers Christ-centered voyages through the canyon." Link (thanks, Nadine!)

DVForge Offering Twenty-Five Thousand
for Mac Virus
03/26/2005 05:26 AM

First of all are these guys idiots. Actually offering $25,000 for someone to write a Mac Virus that they want to spread net wide. I tell you what I am going to do. If my Mac gets infected because of their actions I am going to sue them for damages. I am not a sue happy type of guy, quite the contrary but these types of actions need to be handled in a way that makes companies think twice before doing something so idiotic.

I had to look at the calendar to make sure it was not April's Fools Day as this is the most crazed thing I have seen someone do yet. To be so damn arrogant that you think a Mac is above getting a virus.

It's pure arrogance and that is what is going to do them in. Some hacker is gonna say ok I am gonna teach these arrogant fools a lesson and release something so horrific that Mac users worldwide will wake up with a hard-drive that has been formated or worse.

How many times do I have to say it. Their a bunch of idiots. They think their precious operating systems is so strong that it is safe from any Virus. They are going to eat lot of crow and I hope the Mac community speaks loudly and smacks them in the head.

I have already vowed to never buy a product from this company ever. I swear they are now on my forever I will not do busiess with stupid people list.

They must be prepared becuase they have their lawyers number on their contact page never seen that before.

Tell this company what you think. [DVForge] [Telephone Number (615) 822-9270] [Contact]
