Windows XP Starter Edition Revealed

Windows XP Starter Edition Revealed 06/23/2004 03:41 PM

Microsoft is currently planning a new edition to the Windows XP family of operating systems, namely "Starter Edition". Starter Edition is the name of a previously announced effort to deliver a tailored and localized Windows product to Thailand and Malaysia, as part of Microsofts efforts to enable access to technology. Previous rumours suggested that Windows XP Starter Edition would include a set of applications on top of the standard Windows XP installation (including Office 2003). We cannot confirm these reports but are awaiting a statement from Microsoft Press.

Windows XP Starter Edition a No Starter

Windows XP Starter Edition a No Starter 06/23/2004 07:13 PM
Breaking News | BetaNews has confirmation that despite published reports, Microsoft is not preparing a major release of an entry level version of Windows dubbed Windows XP Starter Edition. Windows enthusiasts speculated that Windows XP Starter Edition was a realignment of the software giant's Office and Windows releases with Office 2003 Service Pack 1 and Windows XP Service Pack 2 that would effectively re-launch both products; however, Windows XP Starter Edition is merely the formal name given to a no-thrills version of the operating system that will be distributed solely in Thailand and Malaysia.

Windows XP Starter Edition for all?

Windows XP Starter Edition for all? 08/15/2004 09:32 AM
Microsoft have confirmed that Windows XP Starter Edition will be released in October and targetted at the Asian market. At the moment Starter Edition is a crippled version of Windows which lacks functionality for the average user. Users who will buy Starter Edition won't be able to use more than 3 windows at the same time, some keyboard functionality is restricted, no file-sharing, no print sharing and no support for local area networks.

The whole idea around Starter Edition is to market a cheap version of Windows that end users will buy and then to convince the user to upgrade to the full version of Windows. It's not clear just how cheap Microsoft are planning to make Starter Edition at present.

Could Microsoft eventually start using this tactic worldwide? If all goes well in India then this pilot scheme would eventually make its way into the United States and Europe. Industry analysts like Gartner are labelling Microsoft's Starter Edition as a "steer away" product. Time will only tell.

In an effort to fight Linux with the most effective line of defense they can think of, Microsoft is working to distribute a cheaper version of Windows called Windows XP Starter Edition. This is the beginning of a trend that indicates Microsoft is not going to lay down quietly as Linux use continues to spread worldwide. Man, remember when they used to say the Windows had no real viable competition? Looks like that is beginning…

Windows Starter Edition Limitations

Windows Starter Edition Limitations 06/05/2005 11:46 PM

Windows XP: The featured article over at Wikipedia today was on Windows XP, and it included this bit explaining what limitations are contained in Windows XP Starter Edition — the Windows version for developing countries (launched in India two days ago).

[...] display resolution can only be up to 800 x 600 pixels, only three applications may be run at the same time, any application may have no more than three windows open, PC-to-PC home networking and printer sharing is not available and only a single user account is allowed.

Um, sounds sucky. But here's the rationale for it.

It is seen as an effort to fight unauthorized copying of Windows XP, and also to counter the spread of the open-source Linux operating system which has been gaining popularity in Asia and South America.

Microsoft's Windows XP Starter Edition will be launched in India in June. The product is in the pilot stage and being tested by nongovernment organizations and other sites in the country, according to a company spokeswoman. Microsoft announced last September that this stripped-down, low-cost edition of its Windows XP OS would be available in India early this year, although it did not give a launch date. Microsoft announced last year five pilot markets for Windows XP Starter Edition: India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Russia, and Thailand. Designed for first-time desktop PC users in developing technology markets, the Windows XP Starter Edition has already been introduced in Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia. The Windows XP Starter Edition will be introduced first in the Hindi language. Microsoft will ship the product through OEMs only, said the spokeswoman, who would not divulge the software's price.

Microsoft announced today that it will be offering a low-cost version of its popular operating system Windows XP. This low-cost OS dubbed "Windows XP Starter Edition" will be available in October of this year. By continuing to work closely with foreign governments Microsoft has signed up not only five governments, but has also made very attractive deals. Three of the governments in question are Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. The other two governments have yet to be officially announced, but some analysts believe it might be Brazil, Russia, or Jordan.

Windows XP Starter Edition was created to offer customers a lower cost operating system, combat software piracy, and to compete against open-source OS's like Linux. What makes this software so different? For starters Microsoft has taken out a lot of features that its regular Windows XP version offered. Users of Windows XP Starter Edition will have a maximum resolution of 800x600, no support for PC-to-PC home networking, sharing printers across a network, and limited to running three programs concurrently. To make up for this Microsoft will add features that represent reach country. Features such as country-specific wallpapers/screensavers, and better help documentation.

Why Microsoft thinks cutting out key features of its OS will help it compete against Linux is beyond me. Still by cutting this features Microsoft can offer a cheaper version of Windows, and from that gain new customers. Already Microsoft is offering deals with over 67 developing nations regarding its software. Deals that allow these nations free upgrades to Windows software, and for only $2.50 a copy of Office. Who knows maybe Microsoft is on the right track.

Microsoft on Wednesday plans to announce it will offer a simplified and lower-priced version of Windows XP in Brazil. Microsoft already said it will offer the product in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Russia, and India. The software is not sold in boxed versions, but installed on cheap PCs designed for first time PC users. Windows XP Starter Edition is part of Microsoft's efforts to take on the growing threat of Linux and piracy, which is common in developing markets. The limited, cheaper version offers localized support and customization options, preconfigured settings, and simplified task management. The starter OS lacks support for advanced features such as home networking, sharing printers across a network, or the ability to establish multiple user accounts on a single PC. It also limits the number of applications that can run at a time to three. Analysts at Gartner have dismissed it, saying it fails to meet the most basic needs of users. Brazil is one of the countries where open source has been getting traction, with the government promoting Linux products. Microsoft did not say when the Brazilian version of Windows XP Starter Edition will be available.

Windows XP "Reduced Media Edition"
Revealed

Windows XP "Reduced Media Edition"
Revealed
02/07/2005 02:10 AM
This week at Neowin we've had the chance to take a look at Microsoft's answer to the controversial EU decision.

Microsoft have been forced to remove their Windows Media Player from Windows XP. The product which was originally named "Reduced Media Edition" is rumoured to be renamed after the EU complained to Microsoft officials about their naming strategy.

During the setup it's clear that Microsoft have changed the EULA of Windows XP adding in the following:

"11. NOTICE REGARDING THE ABSENCE OF REMOVED CODE.
Certain portions of Windows XP Professional associated with Windows Media are not included in the Software ("Removed Code"). The absence of the Removed Code renders inoperable certain Windows XP Professional features related to playback of media, transfer of media to devices, creation and editing of personal video, content protection of media, and playback of Windows Media audio and video by third-party software and websites unless additional software is installed. A partial list of currently known issues is available at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=30822." ;

Once setup is finished users are presented with the standard configuration of Windows XP. However as part of the very limited changes in this edition users are first informed that this version of XP "includes standard Windows functionality, with the exception of certain Windows multimedia technologies". Once XP is finished installing the system properties show that the operating system recognises itself as "Reduced Media Edition", however, no other UI differences can be noted. Interestingly Microsoft left the "Play All" option in the Music Tasks pane within explorer. Using this link just causes the system to throw up an error sound but no onscreen message.

When a user wants to play a .wma file they're presented with the default option of going onto the internet to find what WMA is associated with. On the Windows File Association site users are given the two options of installing Windows Media Player or Winamp. Once WMP10 is installed on the system the user cannot remove it and cannot revert back to an edition of Windows XP without Windows Media Player. If WMP10 is installed users can use the "Play All" option in explorer.

All in all, there haven't been many major changes to this edition and it's expected to be released in the coming weeks under a different name. With OEM PC makers rejecting the OS and little interest from consumers, one can't but wonder just how happy the EU is going to be with the outcome of this judgement. In other news, Open Source developers have complained that Microsoft's proposed resolution regarding inter-operability licenses shuts out developers working under the GPL. Open Source groups hope to lobby the EU not to accept Microsoft's proposals.

The second edition of my book, The Wireless Networking Starter Kit, is out!: My co-author Adam Engst and I spent three months on this revision, which was originally planned to be a small update to the original 360-page book, but blossomed into 560 pages for the same price: $30 (or about $21 through Amazon.com). The second edition's Web site will launch soon, but the book is shipping now, and features a revised table of contents which offers nearly three dozen chapters and three appendixes, up from 10 chapters in the first edition. We now offer a separate chapter for configuring with Windows XP, Centrino, and Mac OS, and cover using cellular data, Bluetooth, and setting up a software base station. The first book was focused on Wi-Fi; the second edition keeps 802.11a, b, and g at its core, but we spread out to all the wireless topics, such as WiMax, 802.15.3a, ultrawideband, Bluetooth, and others. We even have a chapter on configuring Wireless ISP software, such as that from Boingo, Sprint PCS, and iPass. The goal of this edition was to provide even more nitty-gritty information about getting from about 20 miles per hour up to 70 on the open highway. We'll have excerpts and a downloadable table of contents and index soon. (Note that Amazon.com has the old cover and the wrong page count; that'll be updated soon.)...

PC makers, distributors pass on Windows XP N: Microsoft was forced to start selling a version of Windows in Europe that didn't include Windows Media Player. So Microsoft created "Windows XP Home Edition N."

But — big surprise — no one wants it. I mean, why would you? Who would buy a purposely disabled version of the software? This means that the "punishment" meted out by the court means exactly nothing.

Spanish online computer store Publinet has not ordered the product.

"We'll first see how it sells. I heard that this version would be cheaper," said Jose Cabeza, technical director for Publinet. "If it isn't, logically the market will decide about it. I don't see why a client on the street would choose a lesser product."

Microsoft originally wanted to call the product "Windows XP Reduced Media Edition," but the court nixed that since they felt Microsoft was trying to dissuade consumers from buying it.

It looks like that doesn't matter — according to the article, retailers aren't even buying it. I think consumers are going to have to look around a bit to even find someone who stocks it.
