07/20/2004 09:36 AMOracle Corp. and Macromedia have announced a partnership that takes
advantage of the former's learning management system and the latter's
line of content creation products. The result is the
Content Resource Center,
which was created by Oracle and is supported by Macromedia; it allows
companies to use Macromedia's applications to develop, share and
publish content while employing Oracle's iLearning educational
management system for enterprise operations. Both companies hope that
the initiative will improve the interoperability between content
creation and deployment systems as well as facilitate their mutual
interest in developing standards for online learning technology. Users
of the Content Resource Center will have access to Oracle's
PartnerNetwork and Macromedia's Alliance partner program and get the
opportunity to showcase their content to other members of the

OSDL: Linux center of gravity?
01/09/2004 09:58 PMNewsForge learned recently, as a result of electronic conversations
with an anonymous (but well-known) Linux kernel hacker, that chatter
among some kernel hackers reflects a degree of distrust of OSDL, the
Open Source Development Lab. This report airs the major issues
identified in those conversations and allows OSDL the opportunity to
respond to them. We also asked IDC analyst Dan Kusnetzky and two
kernel hackers who work for OSDL, Linus Torvalds and Andrew Morton, to
weigh in with their own comments on OSDL's role and behavior.

Programming for Oracle on Linux
08/27/2004 01:31 PM"By far, the most common RDBMS platforms for Linux-based systems are
MySQL and PostgreSQL, due to their inclusion in most major Linux
distributions. Quite a few shops still run legacy databases, however,
using commercial database servers such as Sybase or Oracle. Even Linux
Journal gave its 2001 Editors' Choice Award for Best Database to
Oracle. As such, it is not uncommon for a programmer to be asked to
put together an application to interact with these legacy databases."

Guru-friendly: Oracle RAC on Linux
Guru-friendly: Oracle RAC on Linux
08/05/2002 10:44 PMFor a number of years I have been deeply involved with clusters,
both of the Linux persuasion and other kinds (see openMosix). I have
always been interested in application-layer based clustering products:
That is, application software that has clustering built-in. Oracle has
offered a clustering product for quite some time; Oracle Parallel
Server did, in fact, find a niche market for itself and, if used
appropriately for its capabilities (read-only distributed access to
databases), it fared quite well.
In July 2001—a year ago—Oracle introduced the Real Application Cluster
(RAC) option for Oracle9i. RAC aims to exceed the capabilities of the
former Parallel Server in the areas of scalability and high
availability. To this end, Oracle adapted their Cache Fusion
technology for inclusion in RAC. Cache Fusion guarantees cache
coherency among multiple cluster nodes (separate Linux boxes running a
similarly configured RAC instance) accessing the same databases,
without incurring high I/O costs. -- Moshe Bar
"tri" Moshe Bar is entirely correct that RAC will not benefit
long-running batch jobs much. This is because batch jobs tend to run
as a single user process. However he omits to mention that
technologies like RAC probably work best in a multi-user environment
with many users performing queries on the database, the typical load
of a busy web-site.

In the Charts: Media Center 2005 PCs
Take Center Stage Among Desktops
12/29/2004 11:54 AMThis month's Top 15 Desktop PCs chart highlights two trends: the
emergence of powerful new gaming systems that have sophisticated
style, and the rapidly growing selection of Media Center PCs, which
expand PC-based home entertainment beyond gaming. Examples of the
former are two new Athlon-fueled machines that sit atop the power
section of our chart: Alienware's Aurora 64 FX-55 and ABS's Ultimate
M5-64. Both of these systems are visually appealing without shouting
"I'm just for games." Not only are they the two fastest systems on the
chart, but they also produced outstanding sound with their high-end
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 cards and their 5.1-channel Logitech
speakers (the X-530 and the Z-680, respectively).
