May it fall with sulphurous fury on those who dispatch an administrative minion to a busy neighborhood coffee shop crowded with regulars dropping by for their efficiently-produced latte, 8:30-ish in the morning, and instruct said minion to fetch back eleven assorted coffee drinks, each one subtly-underspecified and requiring extended barista dialogue, and finally to pay with with a credit card.

Wrath of an angry dog

Wrath of an angry dog 03/06/2004 01:55 AM

HoneyBear, the conehead

Who cares about the wrath of an aloof, mysterious, erratic and possibly fictitious god when you have 60kg of angry dog in your living room? Honeybear today endured a trip to the vet, a bath, trimming of matts, an ear cleaning, ointment and pills and, the final insult, a cone. He has been giving me baleful looks all afternoon and I'm just embracing the guilt. I even went out and bought some fatty pork to fry up and add to his kibble tonight. I'm hoping that meat may soothe some of the hurt feelings he has after I couldn't help but laugh as I watched him try to navigate around the house and bump into things. It was adorable in a difficult to admit to sort of way. :) Yes, I'm whipped and desperate to appease an angry Dog.

He has had an irritated patch of skin on his left front paw for a few months that looks icky because he licks it, but aside from the purple fur from the saliva it doesn't do much. Over the weekend he developed a very aggressive growth between two of his toes on his right front paw that prompted the visit to the vet. He is almost 13 years old, which for a saint is positively ancient, so I was expecting the worst but the vet thinks that a course of antibiotics, a corticosteroid creme and the cone to keep him from slurping it constantly will be effective since it may be an allergic reaction to something aggravated by his diligent applications of saliva. If not, we'll have to have a biopsy and see what to do then. So...here's hoping the old geezer gets well soon and doesn't extort me for a thick, juicy steak every night until he sleeps the long sleep. :)

Town Sold On eBay Finally Sold For
Real... But Not On eBay

Town Sold On eBay Finally Sold For
Real... But Not On eBay
05/21/2004 02:35 AM
Back in 2002 there was a tremendous amount of hype when Bridgeville, the small (mostly deserted) California town was put up for sale on eBay. It eventually sold in an auction for $1.8 million - and got a tremendous amount of press attention. The only problem: the $1.8 million bid was a hoax. A whole year went by and the owners of the "town" sheepishly admitted that the buyer (and his money) never showed up. Now, however, the town has been sold again - but not on eBay, and back down at its original asking price of $700,000. Even with the failure of the actual sale to go through, though, people still remember that you can "sell a town on eBay," contributing to the use of eBay as a PR platform beyond just its ability to match buyers and sellers.

faces from the Ark pen

faces from the Ark pen 12/22/2004 01:57 AM
Mirrors. Documentarian Bruce Jackson found "a group of about two hundred 3x4" identification photographs made between 1914 and 1937... in a drawer in the Arkansas penitentiary in the summer of 1975"; this (slideshow) is the online record of an exhibition.
It is impossible to look at these images and not think about the persons depicted there. But, save for one fact that is a given—and what we find in or infer from these images—we know nothing about those persons, and never will. The given is that they are all prisoners: for whatever reason, they have been deprived of liberty, the single piece of enduring proof of which is the image at which we presently gaze. The conclusions we draw, the feelings we have, the narratives we suppose—they are all our own. The images are mirrors, resonating with aspects of our selves we perhaps never before encountered.
Many of them are haunting; this one has been turned by time into a work of art. (Via Ramage.)

"I have trouble with faces" 11/10/2003 10:46 PM
Face blind: Imagine living in a world in which you are surrounded by blank faces. You see people all around you, but you can't recognize them by their faces, only by context, clothing, and hair. You don't recognize your neighbors when you see them in the grocery store, and you couldn't pick your co-workers' faces out of a line-up. You have to learn speci al coping methods to get through your daily social activities. This is what it is like to have prosopagnosia, or face blindness.

The grid of images UI is one of teh most effective ways of communicating LOTS of stuff - all at the same time. Videowall mentality permeates through this grid - and can be used effectively for a PeoplePlace, a set of Top Albums you're listening to or practially any sort of high-load scalability challenge one might have.

I usually don't pontificate about UI theory - but this screams out to be talked about. I used to blog allot a couple of years ago about Faces. Well now I'm gonna start blogging allot about FaceWalls. Everyone should use these image grids - for new kinds of micro-content!

It's a wonderful, scalable interface metaphor.

LastFM.jpg

last.FM uses the image grid effectively to let folks know what albums you're listening to. This coolio scalable interface approach works subliminally - regardless of what language you speak or what cult you adhere to.

Eventually we'll have loads of open source templates to let folks roll over a thumbnail image and have it zoom up to reveal details of what that information is - and as fast as you can move your mouse, you're onto the next thumbnail image.

This is what I mean by "letting Apple do our R&D for us." We all have seen the Mac OS X icon dock zoom up and down - now we ALL can use that lick for our 'FaceWall' browsing.

The Many Faces Of iTunes For Windows

The Many Faces Of iTunes For Windows 12/22/2004 01:13 AM

Microsoft Windows have a philosophy, it seems, to offer one thousand and one UI choices to do any single thing. This may not be the best UI implementation, but, hey, it's interesting that Apple's iTunes is taking this philosphy to heart.

On the Mac, you can show iTunes as a full-fledge window, as a mini-window, or hide the iTunes window.

On Windows, here's what you can do...

1) Display as a full-fledge window, just like the Macintosh version.

2) Display as a mini-window, just like the Macintosh version.

3) Minimize the window, so that it appears as a button on your task bar.

4) Also show the iTunes icon on the system tray, so that you can right-click on it to access common iTunes menu items. (To enable this option, open the preference dialog, choose "Advanced", and select "Show iTunes icon in system tray." Now, minimize the iTunes windows.)

5) Show the iTunes icon on the system tray, but don't show the iTunes button on the task bar. (To enable this option, open the preference dialog, choose "Advanced", and select both "Show iTunes icon in the system tray" and "Minimize iTunes window to system tray." Now, minimize the iTunes windows.)

6) Don't show the iTunes icon on the system tray and don't show the iTunes button on the task bar. Instead, show a mini-mini player on the task bar itself. (To enable this option, open the preference dialog, choose "Advanced", and unselect "Show iTunes icon in the system tray." Right click on an empty area of your task bar, select the "Toolbars" sub-menu, and then select the "iTunes" menu item. Now, minimize the iTunes window.)
