Spam Becomes Accepted Part of the Net
04/11/2005 05:34 AMNet users are becoming more accepting of spam as a way of life,
according to a new survey released yesterday. It found that while
we're just as annoyed by junk e-mail as ever, more and more of us are
getting used to it and just working past the problem.
The study, released by Pew Internet and American Life Project, said
spam has made 53% of American adults less trusting of e-mail. That's
down from 62% last year. There has also been a fall in the number of
people who said they were spending less time on e-mail - from 29% to
22%. In part, that may be because of more widely-used spam blocker
programs, or webmail systems which have that sort of functionality
built in.
"It shows some level of tolerance that people are
manifesting," said Deborah Fallows, a senior research fellow at
Pew and the study's author. "Maybe it's their getting used to it.
Maybe it's like other annoying things in life - air pollution, traffic
- they are just learning to live with it."
The survey also found a higher number of users were setting up e-mail
addresses without standard words in them, in an attempt to avoid
"dictionary" attacks.

Computer Generated Papers Get Accepted
For Conference
04/11/2005 03:31 PMIn the last couple of months, I've started receiving requests
addressed to Dr. Masnick asking me to submit papers to random and
oddly named conferences. While there are a few Dr. Masnicks out
there (some of whom are closely related), I've never made it that high
up the academic food chain. I've been ignoring the emails assuming
they were simply from confused individuals, but it seems like plenty
of others have been receiving similar requests. One grad student at
MIT got so fed up with the requests that he wrote a fake research
paper generator and submitted some of the results --
which were accepted to these conferences. While the post
linked from here suggests that the reviewers of the submissions aren't
being very careful, you have to wonder if this is something of a scam
-- like the various "Who's Who" books where they try to get people to
buy these books that will just list anyone who pays.

Phonecam pics accepted as court evidence
in China
08/17/2004 01:25 PMIt was inevitable:
Beijing Haidian People's Court yesterday held a session in a case that
involves Mr. Wu Mingming, a furniture manufacturer, who had bilked two
students' parents of about RMB180000 by pretending he was a secretary
of an Education Minister in China. One of the students submitted a
photo taken with a mobile phone as evidence. The photo is a small one,
but it shows one of the parents handing money to the defendant, Mr.
Wu. The parent said he took the photo because Mr. Wu refused to give
him an invoice, and he was afraid he would be cheated.
So far, no judgment has been made in the case. This is the first
documented time that mobile phone photos have been submitted as
evidence in a court in Beijing.

04/13/2005 03:19 PMCory Doctorow:
A GPL'ed automated computer science paper generator programmed by MIT
students produces results so good that the output has been accepted at
conferences.
Here are two papers we submitted to WMSCI 2005:
* Rooter: A Methodology for the Typical Unification of Access
Points and Redundancy (PS, PDF)
Jeremy Stribling, Daniel Aguayo and Maxwell Krohn
This paper was recently accepted as a "non-reviewed" paper!
God, between the pompous CS-speak ("few hackers worldwide would
disagree with the essential unification of voice-over-IP and
public/private key pair. In order to solve this riddle, we confirm
that SMPs can be made stochastic, cacheable, and interposable") and
the amazing diagrams, this thing is nearly the funniest thing EVAR.
