There are lots of bright people out

Congrats to Roland and Boris and.....

They've just launched Bryght - a Drupal hosting service. I hung out with these guys a bit when I was in Vancouver and they're certainly a compelling reason for moving there.

Vancouver is hot.

Here's Roland's post....

Our latest venture is Bryght, a hosted Drupal service, "the Salesforce.com of community content". I am working with Boris, Richard, Adrian and James on this one. Yes, we are all Bryght guys :-) !

We have taken Drupal and combined it with web hosting and email to give you a one stop shop for your community content. No IT required, no muss, no fuss! Check out The lights are on at Bryght for more background on how this started. And if you know of an individual, organization or company that could use a Bryght site, please contact us.

Whither StreamLine you might ask? StreamLine continues and it will continue to resell Blogware blogs because we still believe that Blogware is the best individual blogging platform.

[etech] People-to-People (Microsoft)

[etech] People-to-People (Microsoft) 02/11/2004 09:36 PM
Lily Cheng from Microsoft Research is talking about how people represent themselves on line. The closer the friends, the fuzzier they want the representations. We need to make social tools fluid enough to account for the way people's lives change. We need easy access to friends and people important to us. We want sponatenous interactions. Lily's group went to a mall and asked people to draw their social interactions, and gots lots of circles and lines. Microsoft studied this and built a "personal map" that clusters people based on who they send email to (TO and CC) and how...

Closing in on the iMac

Closing in on the iMac 12/05/2003 01:58 PM
The Pioneer Press claims that Apple's competitors are closing in on the iMac. After explaining that for consumers, "simple is good," the article goes on the compare Gateways's new 610-series Media Center PC to both a 17- and 20-inch iMac. In most comparisons, the iMac won out. Because the 610 comes with an 802.11g wireless card, the Gateway product takes the networking contest, and the Gateway also allows users to record television. The conclusion; "t's a close one,...

Closing in on Tenet "The senate intelligence Committee is getting closer to delivering a scathing report on the CIA's prewar intelligence on Iraq. Sources tell Time that the assessment, which is nearing completion, is so tough that it is sowing doubt even among longtime fans of CIA Director George Tenet. One panel member dodged a question from Time about whether the member still had full confidence in the director, saying Tenet "has done incredible things" for the CIA but adding, "This is not going to be a happy report." ...."

It is funny, I have been thinking about a really deep subject for awhile now. Will Gates eventually decide that it is time to say forget it and close up shop? It is entirely “possible” according to John C. Dvorak. He seems to think that it is not really that outlandish for MS to “call it a day” for good with the way things have been going for them….

CC-licensed prose: "Always Be Closing"

CC-licensed prose: "Always Be Closing" 05/04/2004 08:10 AM
Casey Childers has produced a chunk of Creative Commons-licensed prose called "Always Be Closing." It's the same scene, told thirteen times, with (often NSFW) variations, a remix of something that has no original, a kind of simulacra. He's chosen a license that allows for noncommercial remixing -- I'm curious as to what new works can be made out of these often disturbing scenes.
The waitress interrupted, "You boys need anything?"

The old man grinned, his mouth full. He made a quick effort to swallow, but didn't hesitate to speak around the mess of potatoes that remained. "The name of the man that cooked my lunch, miss. This is heaven on a goddamn plate."

She returned a grin of her own. "His name's Merv, hon, and I'll be sure to pass that along. Now how 'bout a warm-up on your coffee?"

"I served with a commie sympathizer who went by the name of Merv. He had weak stomach, you know, loved to recite the poems he wrote about his wife. He got his head blown off in a French whorehouse."

Closing the Book on Beagle 2

Closing the Book on Beagle 2 08/27/2004 01:37 PM
A flurry of stories out today talk about the possible reasons for the demise of the Beagle 2 Mars probe. No definite cause for the probe's loss has been found but a secret ESA report concluded the cause was poor mangement and offered 19 recommendations for future missions. A new 288-page internal report from the Beagle 2 team itself offers a number of possible theories and lessons learned from the experience. Among their guesses are parachute failure, airbag failure, heatshield failure, or an unexpected thin atmosphere at the entry point that led to an excessively high impact speed. One theory suggests that the probe actually landed successfully and has been fully operational except for a broken antenna or transmitter. Meanwhile, Beagle 3 is becoming the focus of attention now and it's likely the new version of the robot space probe will hitch a ride on a US Mars mission scheduled for 2009.

Firefox and RSS; Question about Closing
Tabs
09/17/2004 12:41 PM
The new version of Mozilla Firefox is out and supports RSS. Don Park calls the RSS support "crappy and useless." Question: One of my favorite features in Safari for OS X is the little circled X in each tab, so you can close it by clicking on the actual tab instead of having to go all the way to the right side of the window in Firefox to click the close-the-tab X there. Is there any Firefox add-on that makes it do the same thing?

Closing the Office door on Microsoft 06/15/2004 09:56 AM
Because OpenOffice is free and you have to pay a substantial fee for Microsoft Office, you might be tempted to migrate your entire organisation from Microsoft Office to OpenOffice. After all, migrating to OpenOffice would save an absolute fortune in Microsoft Office licenses, which is important in a time of shrinking IT budgets. Before you jump right in and begin a migration, though, there are a few issues that you need to be aware of.
