The lemmings go over the cliff, or the
inmates are driving the bus
03/16/2003 04:52 AMAs you may be able to tell from the links that I have selected tonight
for the
Midnight Blog, I am
feeling fairly disheartened, too disheartened to do much original
writing. Once I again, I find that my writing, which starts off being
about technology and its effect on people, people and their use of
technology, my voyages of discovery on this crazy thing we call the
'Net, and the fun random stuff that crosses through my brain, ends up
focusing on politics, writ large. I don't know how
not to write
about politics, as we go to war.
I feel like I am living in Europe in the summer of 1914 after the
assassination of the archduke Franz Ferdinand, and I am watching the
troops mobilize across Europe for a quick fight to "show who is
right," and I know how it is
not going to turn out. History has
many more examples of wars with different outcomes than their
instigators' intended than it does of wars that turn out as planned.
It is not going to be a short glorious war, although the opening
stages may look like it. One billion Muslims may not rise up at once,
but they are not going to be happy with Christian occupation of the
Islamic heartland, and some of them will find nasty ways to express
their unhappiness. It is not going to be the war to end all wars, nor
will it make the world safe for democracy. Like all wars, it will
brutalize the participants and bystanders alike. In this case, both
sides will probably make use of advances in military technology to
commit new barbarities.
So it was particularly disheartening to read this brilliant article,
Just the Beginning, Is Iraq the opening salvo in a war to remake
the world? by
Robert Dreyfuss.
Dreyfuss looks at the intellectual godfathers who agitated for a war
against Iraq in the 1990's, neoconservatives like Richard Perle,
Michael Ledeen, Reuel Marc Gerecht and Douglas Feith, most of whom are
now in or associated with the Bush administration. As Dreyfus
documents using their own words, they see the war against Iraq as just
the first step in a war to remake the Middle East by militarily
attacking or otherwise overthrowing the governments of Iran, Syria,
and Saudi Arabia. They want to see a Middle East dominated by an
alliance between the United States and Israel, backed by overwhelming
military force. They either ignore the fact that being democratic does
not mean being pro-American policies, something that should be
self-evident to even the most ignorant person by now, or they are
clear that what they are after isn't democracy -- they would be just
as happy to have authoritarian pro-American rulers. And they are
prepared to have America go to war to install satraps for the new
American empire. Some quotes:
"I think we're going to be obliged to fight a regional
war, whether we want to or not," says Michael Ledeen, a former U.S.
national-security official and a key strategist among the ascendant
flock of neoconservative hawks, ... the very logic of the global war
on terrorism will drive the United States to confront an expanding
network of enemies in the region. "As soon as we land in Iraq, we're
going to face the whole terrorist network," he says, including the
Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), Hezbollah, Hamas, Islamic
Jihad and a collection of militant splinter groups backed by nations
-- Iran, Syria and Saudi Arabia -- that he calls "the terror masters."
"It may turn out to be a war to remake the world," says Ledeen.
...
In their book, The War Over Iraq, William Kristol of The Weekly
Standard and Lawrence F. Kaplan of The New Republic write, "The
mission begins in Baghdad, but it does not end there. … We stand at
the cusp of a new historical era. … This is a decisive moment. … It is
so clearly about more than Iraq. It is about more even than the future
of the Middle East and the war on terror. It is about what sort of
role the United States intends to play in the twenty-first century."
...
"Nostalgia for the last shah's son, Reza Pahlavi … has again risen,"
says Reuel Marc Gerecht, a former CIA officer who, like Ledeen and
Perle, is ensconced at the AEI. "We must be prepared, however, to take
the battle more directly to the mullahs," says Gerecht, adding that
the United States must consider strikes at both Iran's Revolutionary
Guard Corps and allies in Lebanon. "In fact, we have only two
meaningful options: Confront clerical Iran and its proxies militarily
or ring it with an oil embargo." ...
Perle called on Israel to work with Turkey and Jordan to "contain,
destabilize and roll-back" various states in the region, overthrow
Saddam Hussein in Iraq, press Jordan to restore a scion of its
Hashemite dynasty to the Iraqi throne and, above all, launch
military assaults against Lebanon and Syria as a "prelude to a
redrawing of the map of the Middle East [to] threaten Syria's
territorial integrity." Joining Perle in writing the IASPS paper
were Douglas Feith and Wurmser, now senior officials in Bush's
national-security apparatus. ...
Chas Freeman, who served as U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia during the
Gulf War, thinks it will be a disaster. "This outdoes anything in
the march of folly catalog," he says. "It's the lemmings going over
the cliff."
Required Reading, especially for anybody who thinks this war
has anything to do with freedom.
Like Chas Freeman (a brilliant diplomat, one of the US' best), I am
convinced that the insane asylum inmates have taken over the bus that
was transporting them to the loony bin, and they are driving the bus
over the cliff. Unfortunately, we are on the bus too.
What is a concerned citizen to do? I I write my Congresswoman and
Senators, to support their opposition to the war, I write in this
weblog, but I fear that all this writing is just preaching to the
converted. The inmates have taken over the bus, and there doesn't seem
to be anything we can do to stop them. Instead, we just watch as the
bus goes over. I wonder if this is what it was like to watch the troop
trains scurry across Europe in August of 1914, knowing that death and
destruction were on their way, but feeling powerless to stop them.
Suggestions for meaningful action welcomed.

02/17/2004 01:30 AMAlways
social. I just noticed that Tony Perkins' AlwaysOn has its own social networking service, called the AlwaysOn
Zaibatsu. It will be interesting to see if they can pull this
off.
AlwaysOn is trying to be a lot of things that are
traditionally separate -- an advertiser-funded content site, a blog,
and a community. Will the members (many of whom are doubtless
already on LinkedIn, Ryze, and Orkut) see AlwaysOn as their business
networking "home" online? And how will the site balance the
interests of advertisers with the interests of members, if those
things come into conflict? Tony has a track record of pioneering
new models based around tech-oriented content, so he's we'll suited to
conduct the experiment.
[Werblog]
Combining social
networking and a content site and throwing in a blogging
tool - is what the AlwaysOn Network is all about. I've been
using the tool to
post thoughts into that world - and it's quite fun to blur the
edge between tool and community.
This is an examples of what I meant by social networking being a
feature - not a marketplace. Watch for other combinations
of social networking and content.
The media Pope and Tony Verna
The media Pope and Tony Verna
04/03/2005 08:15 AM
I was IM'ing with Boris yesterday and he
said an interesting thing. "He lives on in our media... Forever
remembered as the first super mediatized Pope ever. There is more
documented evidence of his existence than any Pope ever before. He
will NEVER die... as long as we have storage memory..."
I worked with Tony Verna several times back in my MSM days. Tony is
the inventor of the instant replay and one of the people behind Live
Aid. I learned more about television from Tony than just about anyone
else. I remembered Tony telling me an interesting account of his work
with the Pope. I remember thinking about the impact of mediatizing the
Pope when I heard the story. I decided to email Tony and ask him to
share a story about his role in mediatizing the Pope.
Tony Verna
April 2,2005
Hi Joi,
Thank you for contacting me regarding my thoughts about the passing
of the Holy Father, John Paul II.
As you may recall, in 1986, I created “Prayer For World
Peace,” a one-hour live TV broadcast for Pope John Paul II that
I also produced and directed. The program was viewed by a billion
people worldwide.
I had directed Live Aid and Sport Aid for Bob Geldof and that made
me cocky enough to present the Vatican with the largest satellite
telecast of the time.
My idea was to have the Pope lead a worldwide congregation of
worshippers on five continents in the rosary, a devotional prayer,
where he could alternate the first part of the prayer in one of
several languages… and then cut live to that part of the world
for their response…
e.g. Paris or Dakar for French, Knock or Calcutta for English,
Lisbon or Rio for Portuguese, Mexico City or Madrid for Spanish, and
Frankfurt or Marizell for German.
I had worked with Mother Teresa and knew her well enough to ask
(impose on) her to do an inspirational intro (from were she was
visiting her nuns in Czestochowa, Poland) that would lead to the live
presentation from Rome. Mother Teresa was a wonderful woman whom I
can’t say enough about.
My reputation was good in Europe due to the Geldof projects plus I
had already written 2 of my books that the American communications
archbishops had read.
They were anxious to hear my idea even though they warned me that
the Pope didn’t do programs other people have created.
Undeterred I moved on, and finally met with the Pope in his private
chapel. My wife, Carol, whom you met Joi at your wedding, was a devout
Lutheran and she was ready to bolt out of the chapel at the sight of
the Pope. I calmed her down and when the Pope came over to us, he was
very attentive and cordial. He held our hands and gave me his
blessing to proceed with my idea.
I was hoping for such, since I knew he was a communications Pope
and that he knew the power of the medium.
Later, I addressed the College of Cardinals as a formality and then
proceeded.
The live one-hour was done for Global Media Ltd and was possible in
part by a grant from BIC. The budget was high at 2 million due to
the satellite pickups in 16 locations on 5 continents, Luzan,
Argentina; Marizell, Austria; Rio, Brazil; Quebec, Canada; Lourdes,
France; Frankfurt, Germany; Bombay, India; Guadalupe, Mexico; Caacupe,
Paraguay; Manila, Philippines; Fatima, Portugal; Dakar, Senegal;
Zaragoza, Spain; Czestochowa, Poland; Knock, Ireland; and in the
United States, Washington DC. All of which was cited and documented
on the July 8, 1987 Congressional Record of the House of
Representatives
In addition to the hundred plus cameras I had stationed around the
globe, I arranged for the congregations (live on monitors) to greet
the Holy Father, before and after reciting the rosary with him.
Then the problems began. The religious big shots told me I
couldn’t place monitors by the Pope. I objected and told them
that the Pope should decide. The next morning the Pope gave me his
permission, overruling his big shots.
The insurance company (to cover the $2m) said that the Pope and I
both had to take a physical. I took the physical and explained that
the Pope wouldn’t. They backed down
Next, RAI television (a bunch of men in suits) said I
couldn’t do the pickup from the Vatican. They claimed I was a
one-timer and not welcomed. I left Rome determined not to give
up.
So…I directed the show from London, England (thanks to the
EBU) with the incoming feeds coming to me live from Rome. Strange
but true.
The show went off without a hitch. The VCR and DVD are still
available.
Another problem was that the church worked in centuries so back in
’86 I gave the Pope his first fax machine…as can be
attested to by Archbishop John P. Foley.
Before leaving for Rome to do the show I stopped by Washington DC
and had dinner with David Brinkley and others curious on how I could
pull off such a complex live telecast.
I felt quite honored by the attention.
As I mentioned, a billion people saw the show, and afterwards the
Pope invited my wife, and I back to the Vatican to thank us
personally.
It was a delightful visit.
Then another strange thing happened.
After blessing us the Pope moved away but suddenly he backed up to
give my wife a second blessing.
Joi, my wife converted to Catholicism but I think the Pope gave her
a second blessing because she has to put up with someone like me.
That’s my recollection…… in a jumble.
Best Regards,
Tony
