Email Postage Company Says People Want
Email Postage Stamps
04/21/2004 12:54 PMIs it really any surprise that an email postage company has done a
survey saying that
p
eople want email postage stamps as a way of cutting back spam. In
the past, every survey that has asked people about email postage has
generally come out the opposite way. However, when you ask the
question in a leading way, such as: "Is it a good idea to shift the
cost of e-mail from the ISPs to those who send mass e-mail?" who's
actually going to say no? Of course, people want to "shift the cost,"
but that's not the same as saying they want to deal with email postage
stamps.

A Bad Idea
The Return Of iSmell - How To Sniff Out
A Bad Idea
02/19/2004 12:45 PMFinal damning evidence that the internet bubble is back: some of the
most ridiculous ideas are coming back. When Real Networks (back when
they were Progressive Networks) first came out with Real Audio in the
mid-90s, someone put up a fake site for "RealSmell", which joked about
the ability to smell the internet with special scents being sent over
your internet connection. It was a joke, but it didn't take long for
one company, DigiScents, to
actually
pitch such a product - bringing a whole new meaning to the phrase
"that website stinks." It should be no surprise at all that
DigiScents
died a quick death, but unfortunately the idea lives on. Apparently a
British ISP is getting ready to offer
an internet
based "scent dome" that will let you download smells for your
computer. Here's the best part: for the privilege of letting you
smell the internet (mmmm), they plan to charge you about
$475.
Update: The BBC has an article with
more
details and pictures (but, sorry, no smells).

made from 120-year-old pines felled in northern Switzerland.
'Rathgeb's design focuses on the sustainability and uniqueness of this

said Swiss Post."

05/03/2004 11:38 PMAlmost a year ago, we

Jeremijenko and her ferel robot dogs.
Today, an
Ithaca
Journal article describes a recent visit by six of
Natalie's ferel robot dogs to Washington Park, Ithaca, New York
where they successfully sniffed out the source of some coal tar
pollution. Because their primary goal is educating the public about
pollution hazards, Natalie has taken to calling the robots "weapons of
mass instruction". She hopes to make the plans
simple enough that any high school student can download the
information,
upgrade their existing robot dog, and start sniffing out pollution in
their neighborhood.

06/05/2005 11:36 PMLike nearly every other person who has contributed to this series, I
have tinkered around with my share of Linux distributions. I happened
on Linux From Scratch (LFS) about an year and a half ago. With LFS, my
choices run deep into the system -- into matters such as which shell
to run, what feature of glibc to use, and how to tailor boot scripts.
LFS 6.0, which is what I have built my system around, comes with gcc
3.4.1 (which is used to build everything else), a fairly recent CVS
build of glibc 2.3.4 (which the LFS team provides for download),
kernel 2.6.8.1, and udev.
