Cory Doctorow: It's no secret that many of the Golden Age comic book underpants heroes are Jewish, just like their creators -- Eisner, Lee, et al. This hilarious action-figure fotonovela explores what happens when Ben Grimm, AKA The Thing, discovers his Jewish roots, just in time for Passover. I nearly snarfed Manischewitz when the "Prophet Elijah" showed up for his glass of wine. Print this one out and slip it into your haggadahs, I dare ya. Li nk (Thanks, Isaac B2!)

CSI: Photography

CSI: Photography 09/24/2004 09:55 AM

Reader John R. Bennett of Savannah writes:

You may find this unbelievably uninteresting and more suitable for a dusty corner of digital photography blog, but I'm curious about it:

This week I watched both "CSI:NY" and "CSI Classic" (Or whatever they call the Las Vegas jurisdiction). I noticed the New York crime scenesters appeared to be using Olympus digital cameras, while their colleagues out West seem to be rocking the Nikons. Not sure what's going on in Miami. Probably those Panasonic/Leicas.

At any rate, while it's certainly understandable for different law enforcement agencies in different states to use different vendors for equipment, did CBS and Jerry Bruckheimer actually strike different product placement deals for the different CSI franchises? I'm obsessed.

When "CSI: Topeka" debuts I'm guessing they'll be outfitted with that oddly named Pentax DSLR.

Anybody have any idea? Which is the camera of the true crimefighter?

Readers chime in after the jump.

Figure Eight Train Racing

Figure Eight Train Racing 03/26/2005 09:53 PM

I stumbled across something on SpeedTV today that has to be seen to be believed: figure-eight train racing. Not real trains — three cars lashed together to act like a train.

The first car is the only powered car. Usually something big, old, and American — mid seventies Monte Carlos seemed quite popular. The driver of this car steers and works the throttle. The car has no brakes.

Attached to the back of the first car by chains and a tow bar is the middle car, which has nothing. No engine, no brakes, no driver. Just an empty shell.

Attached to the back of that by chains is the caboose. No engine, no steering, but it has brakes and a driver. God help him.

Now, take eight of these perversions of automotive theory and put them on a figure eight track. Seriously. Then race them for 10 laps.

The race I watched ended with no hits in the crossover, which surprised me. What's amazing is watching the caboose get whipped around like a rag doll. The rear driver is supposed to be able to put some tension on the train by using the brake, but I couldn't see any difference. Any quick steering movement up front got wildly exaggerated by the time it rippled back to the rear and that guy was just along for the ride.

I wish I had a picture to show you, but a few minutes of Googling turned up nothing. Half of me thinks the whole thing was just a nightmare.

David Pescovitz: SeedfaceI love Fortean Times's online gallery of strange photos and illustrations. Along with antique spirit snapshots, stigmata statues, Bigfoot, and dervishes, they have a nice selection of "simulacra photos." In Fortean terms, simulacra photos depict "spontaneous or natural figures or images. These can occur in nature as well as in the chance conjunction of artefacts." For example, the seed capsules of snapdragons in this photo. Readers are invited to send in their own shots to the print magazine's Simulacra Corner. Link

Domes and Cupolas From the New Yorker: "David Stephenson's photographs gaze directly up at the interiors of domes, flattening them and - through long exposure times - revealing details and colors that can't be discerned in normal viewing. The results are bright, kaleidoscopic patterns made up of the Moorish arabesques of the Alhambra, the iconic decorations of a former imperial chapel near Moscow, and the cool, almost Mediterranean blues of a Hungarian synagogue." Stephenson's work is curre ntly on exhibition in New York. Other pages of his work can be found here and here.
