10.3: Use Exposé in two different modes 10/31/2003 10:36 AM

Exposé actually works in two different ways... if you simply click quickly on any of the function keys, Exposé activates in 'sticky' mode (that is, it toggles on or off). But if you press and hold the function key down, the...

Quirks and the Uselessness of Modes

Quirks and the Uselessness of Modes 10/28/2003 11:08 PM

I got into an interesting discussion with Don and Darin yesterday about quirks in browsers. What instigated the discussion was a bug where Safari fails to render a particular Web site because it was given invalid HTML by the Web site.

The site in question has a pretty decent browser check. It uses document.all to detect IE, document.layers to detect NS4, and all other browsers are considered standards-compliant.

Interestingly, though, Opera supports document.all, so it ends up in the IE path. Konqueror also supports document.all, so it too ends up in the IE path. Mozilla and Safari don't support document.all or document.layers, and so end up being the two browsers that take the standards-compliant path.

What's interesting about this site is that it then spews out some invalid code that Mozilla (even in strict mode) honors. This code is NOT honored by WinIE, and Safari's behavior when given this invalid HTML matches the behavior of WinIE as well as the specified behavior according to the rules for HTML parsing. Clearly this is desirable.

This is not the first instance of quirks in other standards-compliant browsers biting Safari (and of course Safari has plenty of these bugs as well). There are plenty of other examples of unintentional strict mode quirks in Mozilla (its overflow:hidden quirk on body, designed to match WinIE's odd behavior, is actually enabled in strict mode) that bite Safari, since it follows the same path.

Now we're left with a dilemma. Do we start implementing quirks for browsers other than WinIE? The problem is that for some Web site designers, the standards compliance path has become "the Mozilla path," and these designers don't run their sites through other standards-compliant browsers like Opera and Safari. Thus they may end up making false assumptions as they stumble over hidden bugs in Mozilla or valid differences in browsers' rendering behavior.

The solution for Web designers is clear:
(1) Test your sites in multiple browsers!!
(2) Do not assume that just because a browser misrenders your site that the browser is wrong. Think the problem through, read the spec, consult other designers, and try to determine who is at fault. Remember that it's unfortunately very easy to trip over ambiguities in the specs as well, and you may be running into a situation where there are multiple valid interpretations.

For browser makers, the solution is not so clear. Mac IE introduced the concept of doctype switching, and browsers were quick to jump on board. Safari and Mozilla have identical doctype switching, and the same three modes (quirks, almost strict, and strict).

But if designers still have code paths in strict mode (e.g., .all, .layers, .getElementById) but then only test their code in one browser along the .getElementById path, then other browsers will potentially end up in trouble.

The conclusion that we came to was that we may very well have to introduce quirks into Safari to match bugs in Mozilla as well as bugs in WinIE. In some cases we may have to introduce these quirks despite the fact that they don't even occur in WinIE! What a no-win situation.

Whatever makes the sites work though... that's what we've gotta do. :)

FINAL
RESULTS - GREAT CANADIAN SONG
CONTEST

FINAL
RESULTS - GREAT CANADIAN SONG
CONTEST
05/11/2004 10:47 AM
trestle bridge
As promised, here are the results of the Great Canadian Song contest. At the end of the first round, our four judges, Chris Corrigan, Darren Barefoot, Robert Cooke and I, whittled the 76 nominees down to 20 finalists. We then re-listened to all 20 songs and ranked them in order. Just as a reminder, to qualify, songs had to be written and performed by Canadians and had to refer at least peripherally to Canada or something identifiably Canadian. The idea was to select possible contents for a compilation CD that would introduce people from other countries to Canada through its music. The judges' rankings are based strictly on personal preference -- how proud we would be to play each song to someone who knew nothing about Canada or its culture and heritage.

Many of our favourite Canadian musicians (Bruce Cockburn, Sarah McLachlan, Marc Jordan, Ian Thomas, Blue Rodeo, Jesse Cook, Guess Who, Amanda Marshall, Alanis Morrisette, and Jann Arden just to name a few) didn't make the list because their best (in our opinion, anyway) songs don't refer to Canada.

Of the 20 songs that made the final list, 15 were ranked significantly higher than the remaining 5, so we're cutting the list off at that point. That's just the right number for a CD. Here's the list, in combined rank order, with links to the lyrics where available.

15. A Real Canadian Girl Stompin' Tom Connors

We really tried hard to come up with a representative number of Francophone songs, First Nations songs, traditional Canadian folk songs and songs by women composers. But as you can see, the list is dominated by relatively modern (20th century) English Canadian songs penned by men. Please blame me, not my fellow judges, for this failing. My guess is that the best identifiably Canadian songs by Francophones, Native Canadians, and Canadian women, and the best traditional Canadian songs, have yet to be discovered by most Canadians, and we need to educate ourselves better on these important contributors to Canadian music and culture. We'll work on it, and recruit some experts in such music to guide us and help with the judging, when we repeat the contest next year.

Meanwhile we will be submitting this list to the CBC, as they requested, and if they aren't enthused about our idea for a compilation CD, we'll use our entrepreneurial resources to try to find another publisher. If we're successful, we'll promote it on our blogs, the various Canadian blog directories and webrings and through BlogsCanada. These are all wonderful songs -- songs of courage, love, loss, tragedy, loneliness and connection with our rugged geography, the land, and, of course, the weather.

BLACK

boondocks
No one who has read The Boondocks has a neutral opinion about its writer, Aaron McGruder. You either love him or hate him, or vacillate between the two extremes. The twenty-something radical leftie is working on a Simpsons-style animated series that will air, ironically, on Fox, probably next year, and as the New Yorker reported last month, he's managed to outrage almost everyone of every political stripe, including other cartoonists who say that he's gotten lazy (the strip is now drawn by Jennifer Seng, though McGruder still does the writing), and that he's relentless to the point of being tedious and unfunny. He is the most banned cartoonist in history, with many of the 300+ papers carrying the strip having cut it at one time or another. But as I think the above strip from last week shows, McGruder's biting wit has lost none of its edge, and demonstrates a fearlessness that goes beyond even what Doonsbury and Bloom County achieved.
