Auto-mounting media devices
Auto-mounting media devices
04/30/2004 12:37 AMWhat follows is an interesting insight into the minds of the eHome,
Media PC press.
As Andrew Grundner
(the writer of this story) gushes on about how cool this closed system
is, he discovers the convienience of auto-mounting devices, and you
have to wonder: "where has this guy been?"
But not everybody made the immediate jump, as Arthur Van Hoff and
Rob Currie did (with their Strangeberry platform), that ZeroConf (which Apple calls Rendezvous) is the perfect
technology for auto-mounting home media devices. The only
difference is that they based their work on an open platform, while
this MediaBolic product is closed and proprietary.
The idea of ZeroConf/Rendezvous is that
products from a wide range of vendors could all work on the same
'auto-mounting' consumer media network.
Now why oh why
would MediaBolic think we'd lock ourselves into THEIR proprietary
network, when we're all joining up on the open network? 'Cause
they got some sort of patent?
And more
importantly - "why wasn't Andrew Grundner asking these questions of
them?"
Now that TiVO
owns Strangeberry watch for some next generation products that
will make Comcast's
Moxi product look like a joke.
Integrating the family's media collection and aggregating a
myriad of home media services; such as digital downloading, photo
prointing or food delivery - is gonna be big business.
And watch for major plays from Broadband Mechanics in this
area.
Meanwhile here's the article that just set me off!
Mediabolic
Delivering on the Digital Home Concept.
Mediabolic Delivering on the Digital Home Concept Category: Editorials - April 29,
2004
By Alexander Grundner
Today I have seen the future and it's not
coming from Microsoft -- at least not yet. I got a chance to meet with
Jeremy Toeman, associate VP of Mediabolic, for the first time,
for an informal get-together. For those unfamiliar with the company,
Mediabolic is one of the leaders in the middleware software space for
connected home devices. Their flagship software product, the M1
Entertainment Platform, can be found powering many notable products
like the Denon NS-S100
Digital Media Server, which won TechTV's "Best of Show" at CES in
January, and Creative's
SoundBlaster Wireless Music Adapter.
Over lunch we discussed the state of the industry, and convergent
devices currently coming to market and on the horizon. Overall, we
were pretty much in agreement with the general direction device
manufactures were taking consumers in. But things got really
interesting when he asked me if I wanted to see of demo of M1 platform
at work.
Back at the office, Mediabolic has terrific demo room setup,
configured with networked computers and a myriad of M1 enabled
connected media devices. I assumed he was going to show me what each
product did individually and then move on to the next product, but I
was just half right. He went beyond that by pointing out how each
device is actually recognized by all the computers running the M1
server software. What's more, all networked M1 enabled PCs can
populate all the connected media devices with content stored on each
PC's hard drive without any special configuration (an industry first
-- this floored me). In other words, if you are using a media adapter
in one room, you will see all the digital files available from a
networked M1 enabled PC, and if a second or third M1 enabled PC is
turned on, then all their additional files will become immediately
available.
This function, that I was never aware of, puts a new face on
connected entertainment. The idea has always been to setup a shared
digital media server to distribute content around the house -- just
configure each networked device to pull content from one central
location. Made sense, but Mediabolic's no configuration,
auto-recognize and populate solution is way more advanced, and
provides a better user experience.
All in all, I enjoyed my meeting, but came away impressed with the
fact that Mediabolic is company that actually delivers on the promise
of interoperable connected devices for the Digital Home. And best of
all, anyone can use M1 enabled products with existing networking and
PC hardware equipment. |

06/17/2005 03:18 PMMicrosoft is continuing to drop new clues about what users can expect
in Longhorn Server, the version of its Windows Server product slated
to ship in 2007, and beyond.
During an online Web chat on Wednesday, Windows Server Senior Vice
President Bob Muglia touched on everything from a possible new home
version of Windows Server, to the future of Active Directory.
Muglia reconfirmed that Longhorn Server Beta 1 will ship this summer,
around the same time as Longhorn client Beta 1. And based on a comment
from one of the Microsoft chat moderators, it sounds as if the current
plan is to have code in testers' hands by August.
The moderator told participants to "please join us in the first
part of August for a chat about Longhorn Server Beta 1."

Easy Come, Easy Go: Antigua Loses To US
Over Gambling
04/07/2005 05:39 PMAntigua has been battling the US for some time over the US's ban on
online gambling. For many years, Antigua-based online casinos
have
run into problems with US laws. Two years ago, they went to the
WTO claiming that the US ban on online gambling was
a
violation of a fair trade agreement the two nations had signed.
It took the WTO almost exactly one year to point out that
Antig
ua was probably right. Of course, that wasn't acceptable for
politicians who seem to think gambling is pure evil (except, of
course, when it contributes to local tax coffers) -- so, while they
planned to ignore the ruling completely (we're the US, we don't follow
international rulings unless we agree with them), they did file an
appeal, just for fun. It turns out that appeal worked, and the WTO
has changed its mind, saying that
banning
gambling is a "moral issue," and therefore not subject to the fair
trade agreement the two nations signed. So, sorry for all you online
gambling addicts in the US, but you're back to breaking the law again.

First impressions of Tiger...
First impressions of Tiger...
06/28/2004 04:31 PMA few first impressions of Apple's upcoming Operating System: Tiger:
- Spotlight
- basically an Apple native verstion of Launchbar with a
few self-evidently nice features (searching Mail). After using
Launchbar for a while I can state without question that it feels like
part of the OS after a while, so if the Apple version has the similar
ability to run it without using the mouse, then I'll be pretty happy.
I doubt Objective Development will be, of course...
- iChat
AV - the new version allows you to conference call ten people and
video chat with loads of people too. That's pretty cool. I'm pretty
bloody impressed by that. It's going to be pretty awesome and totally
what I've been hoping they'd do. It fits in really well with some
other thinking I've been doing...
- Safari
RSS - sites with RSS feeds are marked when you go to them, which
is cool, and then you can subscribe to them directly through the
interface. I'm not convinced by their interaction design here - I
suspect I'll keep using NetNewsWire for the time
being - but it's certainly a positive step that can't help but make
RSS penetration...
- Dashboard
- basically this one is a fucking rip off of Konfabulator and I'm pretty
pissed off about it. I'm not a particular fan of the paradigm, but I
don't think that's pertinent - unlike RSS feeds and the Launchbar
knock-off there doesn't seem to me to be really any reason for
building this into the OS, it's not particularly interesting or
powerful and it really does seem just like nicking someone else's
ideas and lobbing them into your Operating System because you can.
Harsh, Steve. Harsh...
- Automator
- as far as I can tell this is a GUI for AppleScript, allowing people
like me who get scared by even the simplest of scripting languages to
automate tasks quickly and easily without ending up dribbling into a
cup. My personal jury is out on how useful it'll actually be on a
day-to-day basis but that doesn't mean that I'm not impressed.
AppleScript for the rest of us?
- VoiceOver
- a spoken interface for the Mac. I'm not really qualified to comment
on the technology, but certainly the aspiration is good and important
and I don't doubt it'll serve Apple well in cracking governmental
markets. My only quibble - I'm not so impressed by the little white
man they made in Illustrator to put in the logo. He looks a bit lame
and ... bendy ...
- .Mac
sync - a revised version of iSync with a simpler UI and apparently
some developer hooks. It still pisses me off that you have to have a
.Mac account to do any syncing across the internet. I can't quite
believe that function is worth the $60 a year, nor do I think it's
even vaguely conceivable that you couldn't explain to someone how to
set up a server to handle that stuff themselves... Seems like a
slightly shitty attempt to drill money out of you in an entirely
random way...
- Better
Unix - neat! I think!
- XCode
2.0 - wish I understood it!
- System
Wide Metadata Indexing - this is seriously cool and API'd up the
wazoo so hopefully it will start to lay the foundations of the Finder
technologies of the future...
All in all the big news for the operating system is the integration
of search and metadata technologies into the heart of the Operating
System. The Safari RSS and iChat AV stuff is pretty cool too and
everything else looks like tweaks, gimmicks or outright rip-offs. I
wonder when it's out?

packed with the promise of a better search engine, one that seemed to
even put Panther’s superior engine to shame.
But then Steve demoed Spotlight, and all fears were put to rest. Set
to launch in the first half of 2005, Tiger continues to pile on the
features, while Longhorn, now looking at a <A

"We've had to make some trade-offs to deliver the features
corporate customers, consumers and OEMs (original equipment
manufacturers) are asking for in a reasonable time frame," said
Microsoft group vice president Jim Allchin.
Apparently, five years just isn't enough time to properly overhaul an
OS.
"In developing software, somewhere you have to put a stake in the
ground and there's often some hard trade-offs you have to make,"
said Michael Cherry, a analyst with Directions on Microsoft, an
independent researcher based in Kirkland, Washington.
The Windows File System, or WinFS for short, is — or rather, was
— "the active storage subsystem in Longhorn that is used
for searching, organizing, and sharing data. WinFS maintains a store
of items and their properties, and provides a system service in
Longhorn to retrieve information when it's needed."
However a <A

on the Microsoft Web site reads, "In spite of what may be stated
in this content, WinFS is not a feature that will come with the
Longhorn Operating System. However, WinFS will be available on the
Windows platform at some future date, which is why this article
continues to be provided for your information"

Fink can be used on OS X 10.4! There are several ways you can update:
A binary installer will be available within a few weeks, for
binary-only
users. In the meantime, new users should bootstrap fink 0.23.10, just
as stable users, below.
For users of the stable tree, we recommend that you delete your
current
fink with sudo rm -Rf /sw and then "bootstrap" an
installation of fink-0.23.10 using
fink-0.23.10.tar.gz--download that file and expand it,
eg. via
tar -xvzf fink-0.23.10.tar.gz. After running the command
./bootstrap.sh in the resulting
fink-0.23.10 directory,
you'll need to run fink selfupdate
For users of the unstable tree, you may be able to upgrade just by
running
fink selfupdate if your version of fink is less than 0.24.6.
It will install fink-0.24.6 for you. After upgrading to 10.4, first
check
that you have the right version of fink by issuing fink --version
. If your version is less than 0.24.6, run fink selfupdate to
get the right version of fink. Then, whether you selfupdated or not,
reinstall the fink package using fink rebuild fink,
and follow that with another fink selfupdate.
Not all packages are working yet under 10.4, but that situation will
improve over the next several weeks. The stable tree contains
substantially
fewer packages than in 10.3, but all of them should compile.
Of course, some wrinkles still need to be ironed out. We encourage
users with mission-critical applications to check in on the mailing
lists to verify whether anyone has had experience with the package in
question before upgrading.

Konfabulator, a platform that lets you load clever and handsome little
tools (also called widgets), like a small music player, on your
desktop. There's a minicontroversy among Mac observers about whether
Apple swiped the Dashboard idea from the makers of Konfabulator.
