Dean's MoveOn-ish Movement

Dean's MoveOn-ish Movement 12/02/2003 09:57 AM
The Boston Globe today has an article (the link will break tomorrow) about the Dean campaign's plan to ask its supporters MoveOn-ishly to raise money to support Democratic Congresspeople running in tightly contested elections. There are three obvious motivations for this: To take back Congress, to do favors for some Congresspeople who can return the favor, and to rebuild the Democratic base. That last one is the kicker. This campaign from the beginning has felt more like a movement than like a campaign (to paraphrase Natasha C). Given the zealotry of the supporters, it's even more surprising that the...

Delay in LWAPP Movement

Delay in LWAPP Movement 03/06/2004 01:49 AM
It appears that there will be a delay in creating a standard for thin APs to communicate with switches: An effort that became known as lightweight access point protocol was started mainly by WLAN switch vendors who hoped to come up with a standard communication method for thin APs. Such a standard would eliminate the requirement for enterprises to only buy APs from the same vendor they buy their WLAN switches from. But the LWAPP standard proposal has expired. In its place is a new effort known as CAPWAP, or the control and provisioning of wireless access points. Eventually, the idea is that a standard like the one the LWAPP group had hoped to create will be worked on within CAPWAP. In the meantime, CAPWAP's goal is to work on defining the architecture of WLANs. I'm surprised that LWAPP ran out of steam and I think it's unfortunate for the WLAN switch makers. One of the biggest complaints that I've heard of from enterprises that want to deploy WLAN switches is that they have to buy access points from just one specific vendor....

07/21/2004 01:14 AM
Wired News covers the militant wing of the accessibility movement: Web designers who re-design important infomrational websites to improve their accessibility and standards-compliance:
David Jones republishes articles from Wales' National Assembly website on his own Assembly Online site because the official designers "clearly don't know what they're doing."

"They're singularly clueless; the HTML and CSS are invalid," he said. "I was exasperated, so I thought I'd do it myself to show them how it might be done. My employer -- an Assembly-funded body looking to secure next year's funding -- cited it as a disciplinary offense. I don't work for that company anymore."

IBM Joins the Open Hardware Movement

IBM Joins the Open Hardware Movement 04/11/2005 03:29 PM
Having had great success (and profit) so far from their acceptance of Free Software, IBM appears to be moving toward Open Hardware as well. A recent EE Times article describes a talk given by Juan-Antonio Carballo of IBM's venture capital group. He says open source hardware models are part of a wave of revolution coming to hardware world. IBM, of course, points to their Power.org as an example but most people will likely recognize better known open hardware organizations such as Open Collector, Open Cores, and Free Model Foundry, who've been doing Open Hardware for a long time. The funny thing is, it was just a few years ago that Jim Turley of Embedded Systems Magazine told us that the Open Hardware Movement was doomed to fail.

On the Lessig/Posner blog, the pseudonymous Three Blind Mice provides an interesting counterpoint to the weak-IP movement: "Encrypted CDs and DVDs can still be recorded using analog equipment - exactly as before - the difference is that you can no longer make an EXACT copy of the original. This is not a restriction on fair use, it is a return to a standard of fair use that existed before digital media came into being. ... Fair use extremists are demanding the right to make EXACT copies of the original."

AP - At least 20,000 worshippers, about twice the usual number, gathered for weekly prayers at a mosque run by radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, indicating that he may be winning sympathy from more Shiites as his militia challenges U.S. authority in Baghdad as well as across central and southern Iraq.

Usability: A new vision for the free
software movement
01/07/2004 02:27 PM
I am writing this on the 20th anniversary of the start of the GNU project by Richard Stallman. I have a lot of respect for GNU, the Free Software Foundation, and for Mr. Stallman. However, I think the goal of creating an operating system which is simply free has limited the GNU project from its inception and is one of the chief reasons that the FSF has not been as successful in putting free software into the hands of as many users as they would probably like. In the end, it all comes down to usability.

Bensenville PL Movement to Remember

Bensenville PL Movement to Remember
September 11, 2001
03/11/2003 10:45 AM

September 11, 2001 - Libraries Remember

"Libraries represent the sum of all human knowledge, and they represent equal access to that knowledge. Libraries represent freedom of expression, celebration of diversity, a playing field that is level, preservation of heritage, and commitment to the future. The Bensenville Community Public Library believes, therefore, that there could be no more fitting tribute, no more appropriate commemoration of September 11, than for libraries all across the United States to simply be there.

On September 10 this year, the Bensenville Community Public Library District will close at 9:00 p.m. as usual. But then, at midnight, we will re-open, and we will remain open for the 24 hours of September 11.

We invite the libraries of the United States to join us. We propose that libraries of every type, every size, and in every state, for those 24 hours, do business as usual: facilitate communication, foster citizenship, promote understanding, guarantee freedom of access to information, and above all on that particular day, stand with doors open wide as a remarkable symbol of our freedom.

Your first thought may be, that's impossible. May your second thought be, let's do it anyway.

To join the Bensenville Library in remembering September 11, fill out the form on this website. We will add your name to the list of libraries from across the country that are participating in this effort."

An interesting idea. Sign up at the web site if you're interested.
