Intel Pentium 4 “Prescott” Processors
Can Enable 64bit?
01/05/2005 07:12 AM
A Taiwan based web-site reported a rumour claiming there is a possibility to enable 64-bit capability on Intel’s latest Pentium 4 microprocessors in LGA775 form-factor using a mainboard BIOS update. While the information may be correct, it is currently highly-unlikely that such operation will becomes popular.

“Lately there have been some rumours about some special BIOS that can ‘turn on’ the 64-bit [capability] on the [Intel Pentium 4] “Prescott” processors. I have made some enquiries and it seems that there are works in progress [that] are still in ‘alpha’ stage,” a claim over the web-site OC WorkBench states.

Intel’s Extended Memory 64 Technology also known as 64-bit Extension Technology or IA32e lets Intel’s 90nm microprocessors for desktops, workstations, 2-way and 4/8-way servers to execute specially-written 64-bit code while maintaining absolute compatibility with today’s 32-bit applications.

The costs of the Pentium 4 chips with Extended Memory 64 Technology will equals to processors with no such capability at the same core-clock. To distinguish between chips with and without EM64T, Intel names the 64-bit capable chips as 3.20F, 3.40F and 3.60F. Sources close to the company said that that the company would slash the pricing of its 3.40GHz and 3.60GHz chips to $278 and $417 on August 22, 2004.

dual_coreintel.jpgIn an effort to thwart chip giant AMD’s nefarious plans to create a dual-core 64-bit chip, scrappy underdog Intel is rolling out their new chipsets early. Dual core processors, which use two CPUs on one hunk of silicon, are a way to get around the massive amounts of heat modern chips are throw out and up the overall processing power without hogging valuable motherboard real estate.

Running at 3.2GHz, the new Pentium Processor Extreme Edition 840 runs on Intel’s 955X Express chipset. Intel will then release the Pentium D in May, just in time for the dual-core Opteron launch. It’ll be interesting to see where dual-core is headed as AMD and Intel fight it out in the 64-bit space and the dual-core space in the next few months.

When a content owner creates an audio or video stream, they can add script commands (such as URL script commands and custom script commands) to be encoded in the stream. When the stream is played back, the script commands can trigger events in an embedded player program, or they can open your browser and then navigate to a Web page. This behavior is by design

After applying the Update for Windows Media Player Script Commands (KB828026), some URL script commands do not fire even though they would be expected to do so. In addition to the URL script command issues, this package addresses an issue with the installer that would cause 100% CPU utilization in certain scenarios.

(KB825116)
11/04/2003 11:37 PM
DirectX 9.0b was released on 7/23/03 to address the MIDI security issue identified in bulletin MS03-030. A small number of non-security fixes were also included in the release. One of these fixes caused several TV Tuner capture card/driver combinations using video formats other than NTSC (NTSC-J, PAL, SECAM) to no longer initialize correctly on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. Symptoms include loss of capture functionality and potential inability to set/retain device capture settings. This hotfix, documented further in Knowledge Base article 825116, has been issued to correct the flaw. 11-04-03 update: The English hotfix package has been modified to allow patching of all language installations supported by the affected Operating Systems.

Neowin has learned of shocking and potentially devastating news. It would appear that two packages are circulating on the internet, one being the source code to Windows 2000, and the other being the source code to Windows NT. At this time, it is hard to establish whether or not full code has leaked, and this will undoubtedly remain the situation until an attempt is made to compile them. Microsoft are currently unavailable for comment surrounding this leak so we have no official response from them at the time of writing.
