How to migrate your company to Linux
clusters
07/08/2004 07:21 AMAnyone following the high performance computing industry has probably
noticed the growing popularity of Linux cluster systems. The 23rd Top
500 list, a ranking of the world's most powerful supercomputers,
reported that clusters make up more than 50 percent of the list. The
appeal is easy to understand; Linux clusters are a fraction of the
cost of traditional supercomputers while providing blazingly fast
performance numbers. Many organizations from national labs to
Hollywood special effects shops have reported performance increases
that their previous systems couldn't touch. With such widespread
appeal and tangible benefits, the migration to cluster systems seems
inevitable for many organizations.

02/18/2004 05:18 PMNewly liberated ex-Wayport, ex-Musenki, ex-Vivato engineer Jim
Thompson outs Wayport's hardware secret: Jim notes in his new blog
that Wayport's success is definitely partly dependent on its choice
long-ago of 802.11b (radical at the time) and Linux. Jim imagines
having to fly out and remotely fix thousands of Windows-based
authentication and billing modules when Windows viruses and worms hit
-- not a problem for Wayport because of their non-MS infrastructure.
Jim was CTO at Wayport for several years, and his work at Musenki led
to the bridging box that Vivato sells now....

Supporting Server Clusters
Supporting Server Clusters
03/20/2003 01:05 PMServer clusters -- separate servers interconnected to provide high
availability and able to be managed as a single system -- have gained
popularity as IT budgets have shrunk and the technology of clustering
has matured, reducing IT skill set requirements. But IT shops still
may harbor some apprehension when it comes to taking the cluster
plunge.

Efficiently Updating Web Sites on
Clusters
Efficiently Updating Web Sites on
Clusters
01/15/2003 12:51 PMAt the time, our web site ran on a 2.2.x Linux distribution on a
dual Dell 2450. Its performance was rock solid, but we were uneasy
relying on a single machine for our entire business. We determined
that the answer was to replace the single server with a cluster. For
less than the cost of the Dell, we built a cluster of four 1U
one-processor machines. The cluster's performance was excellent. By
stripping down Apache, we could support at least 400 downloads over
HTTP and still have a responsive site. This left one problem: we
needed to be able to update the site often without affecting the
performance. -- M. David Minnigerode
