RADIUS without Tears from LucidLink
RADIUS without Tears from LucidLink
06/08/2004 01:38 PMInterLink introduces cheap, easy-to-administer, single-minded
authentication server with WPA and 802.1X/EAP-TLS support: RADIUS is
expensive and complicated. Small businesses either can't afford the
server software or the staff to support it. InterLink is trying to
reduce the cost of providing a secure Wi-Fi network by introducing its
LucidLink client and server software that has one. Unlike robust,
multi-purpose RADIUS servers, LucidLink authenticates in one way for
one purpose. LucidLink's client software manages certificates used
with EAP-TLS, the most secure method of out-of-band messaging for the
authentication portion of joining a Wi-Fi network using 802.1X. With
EAP-TLS, the certificate on the client machine assures the server of
the correct identity. LucidLink uses WPA for keying material. It
supports certain releases of Windows XP and 2000. LucidLink is the
flip side of the coin from Wireless Security Corporation's
out-of-house solution. WSC runs its RADIUS system as a managed service
over the Internet, charging $4 to $5 per user per month. InterLink's
server will cost $449 for 10 users and a lower per-user cost for
higher quantities, and requires a Windows 2000 or 2003 server. The
client software is nominally free, but the license for users resides
on the server side....

06/30/2004 11:19 AMIndie filmmaker Helmut Kobler announced on Tuesday that his low-budget
indie sci-fi film
Radius,
which was made entirely on the Mac for US$60,000, has now arrived in a
two-disc DVD set that was also created on the platform. In 2001
M
acCentral covered the making of the film, about the crew of a
downed military ship trying to escape before its onboard warhead goes
off. The $19.95 release features the 34-minute movie on disc one,
accompanied by two commentary tracks and over 90 minutes of making-of
materials. Disc two offers two hours of filmmaking documentaries,
dubbed by Kobler "Guerilla Film School on Disc," that explain how to
make a digital movie look like a major studio release on a shoestring
budget. Trailers for both the film and the DVD are available on
Kobler's Web site.

Airport Express & AirTunes
Airport Express & AirTunes
06/08/2004 07:15 AMApple have announced a nifty little device called
Airport Express
— a portable 802.11g base station with an audio port for
wirelessly sharing music around your home or office.
You connect your stereo to the optical audio output port, plug the
device into a power point and, using
AirTunes
a> (part of soon-to-be-released iTunes 4.6), play music on your Mac
through your stereo.
Being wireless of course, your Mac doesn’t have to be in the
same room as your stereo, just within range of the device. The unit
also has a USB port for wireless print sharing and a single 10/100
ethernet port to extend your network.
Kinda cool, and at GBP99, not priced too badly either.

Radiator Radius Server 3.12 (Default

Radiator Radius Server 3.12 (Default
branch)
03/17/2005 03:33 AM
Radiator is a radius server that is flexible, extensible, and
authenticates from a huge range of auth methods, including Wireless,
TLS, TTLS, PEAP, SQL, proxy, DBM, files, LDAP, NIS+, password, NT SAM,
Emerald, Platypus, Freeside, TACACS+, PAM, external, OPIE, POP3, EAP,
and Active Directory. It runs on Unix, Linux, Solaris,
Win95/98/NT/XP/2000/2003, MacOS 9, MacOS X, VMS, and more.
Changes:
This version contains some major new features,
such as RADSEC protocol support, which implements
Radius transport and proxying over a reliable
TCP/IP or SCTP connection, with optional TLS
encryption and optional TLS mutual authentication
by PKI certificate. This permits reliable secure
proxying to other Radiators. Support was added for
Novell eDirectory Universal Passwords, for use
with PAP, CHAP, MSCHAP, MSHCAPV2, TLS, TTLS-*,
PEAP-*, and LEAP. A number of other minor features
were also added, as well as a number of bugfixes.

I, T-shirt: wearable movie trailers at
NextFest
05/17/2004 10:31 PMIn
The Hollywood Reporter today, an item about t-shirts that
display movie trailers -- as seen at both E3 and NextFest last week.
Coming soon to a T-shirt near you: trailers for "I, Robot," starring
Will Smith. In the never-ending search to capture the attention of
consumers bombarded by commercials, billboards and a massive array of
other advertisements, 20th Century Fox debuted an innovative new
guerilla marketing tactic at E3 last week -- T-shirts embedded with
video screens that played "I, Robot"
trailers.
The two women who wore the video T-shirts as they walked around E3
drew crowds and TV news crews on hand to cover the gaming conference
at the Los Angeles Convention Center. 20th Century Fox is the first
studio -- or business of any kind -- to use the video T-shirt
marketing tactic developed by San Francisco-based Brand Marketers.

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
03/22/2005 05:03 PMYesterday we noted that the MPAA and movie theater owners were
whini
ng about how much people coming in an taping movies was hurting
their business. The obvious response, we pointed out, is to recognize
that going to the movies is a
social experience. It's not just
about the content (though, that is important), but the overall
experience. If they improved that, then people would want to go --
even if they could score the same movie off the internet or a cheap
DVD bought off the street. While the folks in Hollywood refuse to
entertain this idea, someone (anonymously) in the comments to that
story pointed to an article in China noting that
this is exactly what Chinese movie theaters have done.
After years of declining attendance, they finally shaped up and made
going to the movies cool again. They improved the overall experience,
putting in better equipment and more comfortable seats. They improved
the sound and the lighting as well. It sounds like they also made
some theaters to be more like bars, to help attract young adults away
from traditional bars. Yet the supposedly "creative" movie people in
Hollywood insist "nothing can be done" to get people into the theater.

"The Utah State Legislature has a bill
tracker with an RSS feed. You create a customer list of bills to
track and then subscribe to the RSS to get updates in your feed

this is functional. There's a second application for tracking

Not terribly surprising since Utah is the land of RSS, but all this
does is point out how slow other states are at figuring all of this
out. Let's get with the program, folks!
