Solving The Online Music Format Mess...
With Another Format?

Solving The Online Music Format Mess...
With Another Format?
12/11/2003 02:43 AM
Now that every other company is starting a music download store (even if no one is making any money off of it), people are beginning to realize that maybe it makes sense to come up with a single format that works for anyone. Of course, some might say that we've already got formats that work, but the folks over in the recording industry seem to have a mental block when it comes to the formats that everyone likes to use. So, now, Microsoft, Universal Music and others, under the title of the Content Reference Forum, are teaming up to create a new music format - but one that makes it easier for them to make you buy the music. There aren't all that many details, but it appears to be going back to some of the very original concepts behind a hypertext system: that content only needs to be available once, and any time you want to access it, you just link to it. In other words, instead of offering downloadable music, the plan is to offer links to music that is served up remotely. Of course, one of the "features" of such a system is that the content providers can know (and, potentially, charge you) every time you want to hear that certain song. It's an interesting idea, but it seems to make the music less valuable. Suddenly, it can only be listened to from an internet connected machine, you don't actually own anything, and the big content providers get to keep a big database of exactly what songs you listen to when. Doesn't sound all that appealing to me. The one thing that it does have going for it, is that it allows people to "share" - if, by share, you mean point someone to a link and let them pay for it themselves.

RFP: XML format for timelines

RFP: XML format for timelines 12/02/2003 01:28 AM

I'd like to see a simple XML format to express timelines with events on them, and a few tools to create this XML, turn them into Flash, HTML and such. The format should allow for merging timelines.

(Just some ideas:) A timeline exists of a StartingPoint, an EndPoint, and Events in between. Each Event is optionally identified by one or more URI's (for merging), has a required StartingPoint (datetime) and an optional EndPoint (datetime, for events that happen over time). Events can be nested within events. Each event can have a URL (semantics: where to go when user clicks on event), a title, a description and an image.

We should be able to express things like conferences, or a personal timeline in this format.

The format should allow merging: time is universal. The events can be merged based on having at least one URL that's the same. We should be able to merge your description of a conference (with your blog entries as events for example) with my description of the same conference.

Anyone interested in working out such a format?

Opinion: Universal DVD recorders are great in concept. You no longer have to worry about whether you use DVD-R/-RW or DVD+R/+RW. But you do have to worry about which brand and where it's made. What's worse is that some are finicky about CD-RW media. This is supposed to be easier?

Q: Markup format?

Q: Markup format? 03/14/2005 05:10 PM

Q: Which markup format do you use when posting?

Both Textile and Markdown are installed and I flip between them. When I want to post a lot of code without hassle I'll use Markdown because it seems smarter about that kind of thing. Most of the time, however, I want to just write so I'll use Textile; I find that it's a quick and mildly-intuitive way to access the various classes in my stylesheet for the myriad of things I do within this little block of space. Each has a purpose, so each gets used. I rarely enter raw HTML, and when I do it's typically to get around something broken in either markup format.

Et toi?

This entry was in Textile, for those keeping score. It is much easier to enter p(ps). or p(note). rather than <p class="ps"> or <p class="note">. Smiling

New music format from Sony

New music format from Sony 11/13/2003 04:07 PM
In an attempt to challenge Apple's current dominance of the exploding online music market, Sony has announced plans to embed on copy-protected CDs digital music files which can only be played on Sony-approved equipment. The files, which are encoded in a proprietary format, cannot be read by or stored on unapproved devices like Apple's iPod, but can easily be transfered to an approved portable device for portable playback. Critics of the plan point out past failures of copy protection...
