Microsoft says it's faster than Linux on
file serving
06/23/2004 12:23 PM

Microsoft continued turning up the heat on Linux with its Get The Facts campaign last week. This time, Microsoft claimed that Windows 2003 was faster at file and print serving tasks than a Red Hat Linux server, based on a test performed by Veritest. The tests pitted a Windows 2003 Standard Edition server against Red Hat Linux Enterprise Linux ES 3.0 running Samba 3.0 - a software package that allows Linux/Unix servers to host Windows clients. The machines were loaded onto an HP DL380 G3 with two 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 processors, 4GB of RAM and an Intel PRO/1000 MT Dual Port Gigabit Server Adapter. Also used was a Dell PowerEdge 500SC server configured with one 1 GHz Pentium III processor, 1GB of RAM, an onboard Intel 100M bit/sec Ethernet network adapter, and one Intel PRO/100 Fast Ethernet NIC. Microsoft said the results showed that the Windows server performed 46 per cent better than the HP-based Linux box, and 24 per cent better than the Dell Linux server.

Most modern operating systems provide file monitoring facilities to give applications real-time information about changes to the filesystem. A variety of notification methods are used to tell the application when a change happens, ranging from an asynchronous signal being sent from the kernel through a user space tool printing the name of the changed file on its standard output. We'll take a look at some of the file monitoring facilities available to the Linux developer, starting with the lowest-level mechanism and working up to the highest.

Linksys says faster..FASTER! 01/04/2005 08:10 PM
Over at CES, Linksys will be announcing a new series of 802.11g products that integrate SRX, a new speed boosting feature.

Currently, 802.11g networks have a range of between 120 and 160 feet and a transfer at 54mbps.

Linksys claims that the SRX enabled 802.11g products can provide 3 times the range (450 feet) and is 8 times faster (i.e. nearly USB 2 speed wireless).

It's completely compatible with other 802.11g and 802.11b networks.

The wireless router is expected to sell for $199 and each card around $129 and should be available at stores shortly.

MVPs keep bashing competition of
Microsoft (Linux, Symbian) and cajoling
users to get Microsoft products
01/28/2004 01:31 PM
Apparently Microsoft MVPs not only are helping users of Microsoft products, but are also officially bashing Microsoft´s competition: Robert Levy says that Windows Mobile from Microsoft is better than Linux, because operators will earn less money with Linux (and thus forgets one important factor: users don´t like to part with their money very much): Linux is proclaiming "Pick me! I´ll decrease your costs!" while Microsoft is getting right to the heart of the matter by boasting "Pick me! I´ll increase your revenue." One offers to cut the cost of each device by a few dollars. The other offers to increase the amount of money customers pay to their carrier each month by a few dollars. This doesn´t sound like a very difficult decision to me.

When a content owner creates an audio or video stream, they can add script commands (such as URL script commands and custom script commands) to be encoded in the stream. When the stream is played back, the script commands can trigger events in an embedded player program, or they can open your browser and then navigate to a Web page. This behavior is by design

for DirectX 9.0b on Windows 2000,
Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003
(KB825116)
11/04/2003 11:37 PM
DirectX 9.0b was released on 7/23/03 to address the MIDI security issue identified in bulletin MS03-030. A small number of non-security fixes were also included in the release. One of these fixes caused several TV Tuner capture card/driver combinations using video formats other than NTSC (NTSC-J, PAL, SECAM) to no longer initialize correctly on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. Symptoms include loss of capture functionality and potential inability to set/retain device capture settings. This hotfix, documented further in Knowledge Base article 825116, has been issued to correct the flaw. 11-04-03 update: The English hotfix package has been modified to allow patching of all language installations supported by the affected Operating Systems.

RMS allows information workers to distribute information within their organizations and define how and under what circumstances it can be used, such as when it expires and who can open, modify, print and forward it. The ability to express and enforce document-level protection will allow organizations to internally share information more broadly, with less risk of inadvertent or intentional misuse.
