Data Points in Media's Transformation

Data Points in Media's Transformation 06/23/2004 12:18 PM

  • James Cramer (NY Magazine): Viacom SOS. No, to find out why Viacom’s stock sank to the 52-week-low list, all you need to do is look to the 52-week-high list, where the winners are: video games, satellite radio, video-on-demand, and Internet search engines. Those are the companies with the better models, the better technology that has, in an incredibly short period of time, stolen massive amounts of the fuel that powered Battleship Viacom: the viewers themselves.
  • Chris Nolan: It's Not Just Blogging AnymoreFor a while I, and many others have been dissatisfied with the term “web logging.” That focuses on the technology, not on what the technology produces. So, after a little thought, I’m calling what I and others do Stand-Alone Journalism. Why Stand-Alone Journalism? Well, it’s accurate. A journalist – or a small group of reporters – can work on the web to produce what they want as they find it appropriate. And readers are equally free to read the work of individual journalist as they see fit, on their time, not on schedules set by TV networks or the newspapers.
  • Viacom is trying to save its business model, as are other Big Media companies. Chris Nolan and other sole-proprietorship Web journalists are trying to create one. These aren't exactly ships passing in the night. But something important is going on. Big Media, contrary to the popular belief among bloggers, do get it. The problem for Big Media is that there's no way to return to the good old days of monopoly practices -- unless government mandates it. We're heading in that direction, unfortunately.

Fuzzy Lookup and Fuzzy Grouping in Data
    Transformation Services for SQL Server
    2005
    09/01/2004 02:21 AM
This paper describes the Fuzzy Lookup transformation and Fuzzy Grouping transformation in Data Transformation Services (DTS) for SQL Server 2005. Fuzzy Grouping transformations are useful for improving data quality at the destination database. Fuzzy Lookup matches input that is "dirty"—because of misspellings, truncations, missing or inserted tokens, null fields, unexpected abbreviations, and other irregularities—with clean records in a reference table. Fuzzy Grouping detects similarities between input rows and determines which rows are duplicates by using their string values. Fuzzy Grouping and Fuzzy Lookup are useful primitives that can simplify a variety of data cleaning and preparation tasks that are frequently encountered in data warehousing. By customizing them for your domain, you can leverage general search and clustering algorithms inside the DTS Designer while avoiding complex custom code.

    Points

    Boston/Cambridge Weekend: Three Data
    Points
    12/19/2004 03:18 PM
One: I'm checking into my hotelin Cambridge. The guy at the counter asks, "Do you want high-speed Internet access?" Yes, I say. Then he asks, "Wired or wireless?" Wired, I say. I get to the room, find the Ethernet cable poking out from behind the desk, plug it in and am online in a few seconds, no extra charges. Good service. Two: On the first day of the Harvard conference, Net access is available only for speakers and a selected few others. Since I'm speaking, I'm among the happy few who gets online. But many folks note the irony of a conference about the Net not being able to provide access to all. The second day, in another hall, there's wireless for everyone. Three: At Logan Airport, where I'm posting this (via a dialup line), the wireless access is controlled by MassPort, the local agency that runs the airport. It's $8 a day, and my T-Mobile service won't work, says the man behind the counter at the United Red Carpet Club. MassPort is greedy.

Toppling Saddam: Iraq and American Military Transformation (pdf) The relative speed and ease of the first phase of the war in Iraq are due in part to U.S. military prowess, but also to Iraqi weakness, according to a critical internal account prepared for the U.S. Army."The shortcomings of Saddam's military played an important role in limiting the cost of major combat operations in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Coalition strengths were important contributors, but so were Iraqi weaknesses."As a result, there are "important limitations on the Iraq War's lessons for other defense planning challenges.... The Iraqis' shortcomings created a permissive environment for Coalition technology that a more skilled opponent elsewhere might not," according to the study Foreword. The study, which does represent an official U.S. Army perspective, has not been formally released.
