Canadian Copyright Board allows
downloads, copyright levies
12/14/2003 12:27 PM
The
Copyright Board of Canada
issued a ruling on
" private
copying ", largely via peer-to-peer computing, with several
components. First, downloading is acceptable, but uploading is not
(presumably to target hyperpirates). Second, new mechanisms for
levies were described, freezing current ones, allowing new
charges.
the Copyright Board said uploading or distributing
copyrighted works online appeared to be prohibited under current
Canadian law.
However, the country's copyright law does allow making a copy for
personal use and does not address the source of that copy or whether
the original has to be an authorized or noninfringing version, the
board said.

www.pewinternet.org/PPF/r/154/report_display.aspAccording to the latest Pew Internet memo, more than 22 million
American adults own iPods or MP3 players and 29% of them have
downloaded podcasts from the Web so that they could listen to audio
files at a time of their choosing. That amounts to more than 6 million
adults who have tried this new feature that allows internet broadcasts
to be downloaded onto their portable listening device. This will
continue to grow as an alternative form of information dissemination
for the persons on the go and listening while they are traveling

News&storyID=3952156 By the end of 2003, the number of
China's Internet users is expected to hit 78 million, writes the China
Daily newspaper, citing a report by the Internet Society of China. The
article also stated that the number of China's websites is expected to
increase to 500,000, and online computers would reach 30 million by
the end of the year. Hu Qiheng, chairwoman of the society, was quoted
as saying the Internet sector in China still lagged developed
countries. The number of Internet users grew an annual 48.5 percent to
68 million people by the end of June, according to the China Internet
Network Information Center. The semi-official research center said
that China overtook Japan at the end of 2002 as the world's
second-largest group of online users, second only to the US.
