Google's Gag Order

Google's Gag Order

Google's Gag Order 06/23/2004 11:08 AM

Perrspectives: Google's Gag Order. Another piece on Google's bizarre no-hate-ads policy, but this one suggests it is applied with a conservative bias. The author had a political commentary website which included an article which called the President "secretive, paranoid and vengeance-filled". His site was taken down. Yet another site, whose _name_ is "Michael Moore Hates America", is allowed to run ads for "Michael Moore". It is increasingly clear that Google cannot enforce their censorship policy with any semblance of fairness. Worse, [their editorial policy in ads undermines their claim of fair, computer-generated results](http://google.blogspace.com/archives/001233). Google should stick to ensuring adds are accurate, and let the computer decide which ones to show based on which are popular....

SpamCop Gets Restraining Order On
Spammer's Temporary Restraining Order
05/12/2004 02:08 PM
Well, that certainly was quick. Yesterday we wrote about the tempo rary restraining order against SpamCop from reporting any spam from OptInRealBig to ISPs other than OptIn's own, and today that temporary restraining order was dissolved, as it appears the lawyers for IronPort/SpamCop made a compelling argument that OptInRealBig wasn't telling the full story. The judge admits that: "The legal issues are more complicated than they originally appeared." The hearing on the case has also been moved up a few days and will be held early next week.

Towards a new world order

Towards a new world order 06/22/2005 02:41 AM

I've been ranting and raving for a while now on what is becoming known as 'structured blogging', microformats and micro-content.

Lots of attention wi ll be placed upon this next week - as the SuperNova conference will have a workshop on microformats - which is ONE of the ways to implement these notions of 'structured content'.

Broadband Mechanics will have an announcement in this arena - just as soon as we get our marketing language in place.

It's a key componenet to a world moving very quickly. We wanted to make sure that various tools and services can easily 'mesh into' this burgeoning world. We're implemening this code in our own products and all our client's systems - so we thought it would be nice to give it to everyone else - as well.

Stay tuned - any hour now.

Mac OS X 'Tiger' Available for Pre-Order

Mac OS X 'Tiger' Available for Pre-Order 03/28/2005 03:14 PM

tiger_amazon.jpgAmazon has a pre-order page for Apple's next revision of OS X, 10.4, or 'Tiger.' While there's no release date, the $35 mail-in rebate shows a 'postmark by' date of May 31st, so I would expect it to arrive reasonable soon before then. There have been rumors that Tiger would be release on April 1st, but who knows.

If you're a Mac user, there's much to recommend Tiger, from the previews, including system-wide search indexing and upgraded versions of many of the bundled programs. Historically, I've found the OS X upgrades to be worth the $130 cost, but you wouldn't hurt anything by waiting for a review (or the first patches).

iTrip mini Available for Pre-order

iTrip mini Available for Pre-order 06/02/2004 08:56 AM

prod_itrip_mini.jpg imageLooks like Griffin Technology has released a version of the iTrip specifically for the iPod mini which they're calling, unsurprisingly, the 'iTrip mini.' The iTrip is an FM transmitter for the iPod which lets you broadcast to pretty much any FM station you want via a sometimes kludgey 'frequencies as songs' interface. No matching colors, though, as the iTrip mini will only come in white, topping your mini like a stick of deodorant. Still, I have an iTrip for my iPod, and besides the aforementioned interface weirdness, it definitely gets the job done. Griffin is taking pre-orders now for $40 and expects to ship in July.
