Salesforce.com Raises IPO Price Twice, Still Gets First Day Bump

Salesforce.com Raises IPO Price Twice,

Salesforce.com Raises IPO Price Twice,
Still Gets First Day Bump
06/23/2004 11:06 AM

Yet another sign that the dot com IPO window has been thrown open again. After a variety of problem s and delays, mainly due to questions about CEO Marc Benioff's quiet period press appearances, Sa lesforce.com has finally gone public, launching that "other IPO," which many consider to be the second major IPO of the year, following Google. It appears that there was an awful lot of demand. Yesterday alone, leading up to the pricing, they raised the price from a range of $7.50 to $8.50 up to a range between $9 and $10. However, they clearly heard that there was a lot more demand, so when they sold the shares last night, they went for a price of $11. They opened this morning at $15, showing that they may have left even more money on the table, but it's not a ridiculous first day bump. So far, the price has stayed around that range. With a number of tech firms already rushing out the door it's likely that VCs and investment bankers alike are looking for just about every company they can toss through the IPO window before it closes again. There are certainly some good, solid, profitable companies this time around, but it's likely that they'll try to sneak a few duds through as well.

Flex raises it price

Flex raises it price 04/09/2005 09:17 AM

What's amazing is to watch Macromedia and their private blogging corps try to spin this one.

What software company raises it prices nowadays? says David Temkin.

Here's my theory:

- Macromedia has found a hit in Breeze. They now have an enterprise sales force out there doing onesies and twosies.

- Thye're building a suite of add-on modules - so watch out if you're Convoq, Userplane and anybody else who relies upon the FlashComn server.

- So where does Flex fit into this? Well I don't think Macromedia wants to be in the tools biz anymore - so they'lll raise the price, sell it through their direct sales force - ane once again - fuck their developers.

- this is what I think is going on

IMHO

Oh BTW - what's the story with this hidden backdoor in the flash player - that only Macromedia gets to use?

PalmOne Raises Treo 650 GSM Price

PalmOne Raises Treo 650 GSM Price 02/05/2005 10:17 PM

TreoIncrease.jpg imagePalmOne seems bound and determined to slough off all the good will anyone ever had for them, with so many customer-last maneuvers you'd think they were run by Steve Jobs or something. Last night, PalmOne raised the price on their unlocked, unsubsidized Treo 650 GSM model from $599 to $699, citing a 'pricing error.' That's total and complete bullshit and everyone knows it—something as important as the price of a launching product gets checked and re-checked.

The increase means one of two things: so many people were buying the generic GSM version that they felt they could milk them for another $100 without worrying about losing sales (doubtful), or Cingular put the squeeze on them, worried that too many people would get the unlocked model instead of tying themselves to a carrier for a year or two. Either way, it's a total slap in the face to people who have been waiting for this product for months, although they should be used to the ill treatment by now. After the RAM problems and broken Bluetooth Dial-Up Networking, both of which Palm promised to address but never followed through on, Palm users should feel properly put in their place.

I have a Cingular Treo 650 on the way for testing. I think I'm just going to send it back, unopened.

Apple Raises Bar on Portability, Price,
and Features in a Home Gateway

Apple Raises Bar on Portability, Price,
and Features in a Home Gateway
06/07/2004 03:46 PM
AirPort Express from Apple puts audio, print spooler, bridging, and Ethernet in one tiny package: Apple has released a seven-ounce home Wi-Fi gateway that's barely larger than a power adapter. The AirPort Express works with any Wi-Fi device, but it particularly supports streaming music through a built-in analog and digital audio jack and USB printer spooling through a built-in USB port on certain later release of Mac OS X and Windows XP and 2000. The small device runs 802.11g with full WPA support, and handles bridging via Wireless Distribution System (WDS). Apple guarantees WDS will work only with its own devices. The AirPort Express can act as an access point and bridge at the same time. Apple's free iTunes software for Mac and Windows will have a small update this week to handle choosing a particular AirPort Express base station's attached stereo or powered speakers. The AirPort Express raises the bar on features, as it combines print spooling, audio streaming, and WDS in one form factor. Similar features are available from many other manufacturers, but typically only as a single device (audio/photo/MPEG streaming only) or with limitations, like Linksys's WRT54G which can either bridge or be an AP, but not both. It remains to be seen whether Apple can find a broader audience for its product with a $129 price tag when it ships in July, but its combination of portability and plugs might push it into the forefront of both the home market and the roaming traveler's world....

We're sorry to inform the passengers of Flight 905 that the situation is FUBAR

So our plane's wing hit the wing of another plane on the ground, so we never left. I won't be back until late tomorrow, and I won't make my panel, or anything, at AlwaysOn. Regrets and apologies, folks. Major bummer.
And I don't have much more time than to thank Euan for the bluetooth/cellphone bridge that's making this post possible. And the fine company for one sleepy, grumpy passenger.

[Doc Searls]

Ouch - I hate it when my plane gets into an accident. I slept late today - so I'm gonna miss Rob Glaser's keybote. I'm sure he won't mind.

But then I'll get there in time to ask him about new business models in media. Oh boy.

Maybe we can talk about the time when Rob was still at Microsoft and he licensed the Director player - and then..... discovered our real strategy (cross-platform functionality) and never shipped the player with Windows 3.1.

It was supposed to be called .mmm.

The whole world would have had the Director player from Windows 3.1 on, but instead.... it never happened.

Things That Go Bump in the Night

Things That Go Bump in the Night 04/14/2004 06:40 PM

Every night, five mysterious thuds wake up neighborhood: On the heels of Joe's post about ghosts in the machines in Sciliy, I found this over at Boing Boing.

It's been six months since the residents of Manor Green Road in London have had an uninterrupted night's sleep. "[T]hey have been hearing five repeated thuds in the middle of the night and cannot trace the source. Double-glazed windows and ear plugs have been no match for the tumult."

Reading the article it links to, it makes me wonder why they couldn't just triangulate the noise. Couldn't you rig up some microphones, record through the night at a different place every night for a week, then pinpoint the noise based on the direction relative to the microphone's position?

Is my reasoning scientifically accurate here?

imageToshiba's upping the storage capacity of their 1.8-inch hard drive --the same ones that provide the guts of the iPod -- to 60GB. Apple already has their order in, too, so expect 60GB iPods to be announced sometime around July or August and to begin shipping soon after. The real question, though, is what will push down to the rest of the iPod line? I'd love to see 60GB/40GB/20GB models instead of the current 40GB/20GB/15GB.
