MT 3.1 Upgrade Report

MT 3.1 Upgrade Report 08/31/2004 10:28 PM

Well, I went ahead and upgraded to Movable Type 3.1 with the free version I got from joining the MT Professionals Network (still trying to find a catch...).

Note that if you're considering a 3.1 upgrade, wait — there are errors in the upgrade scripts that Six Apart is working to fix right now. I had to make one code change and forge ahead while ignoring another error in order to get the upgrade to work. It doesn't help that I've hacked this install up pretty badly.

I haven't really tested any new functionality yet. It doesn't seem any faster, which is disappointing, but the new interface is much, much cleaner and the stylesheet has been made more...hackable. Selectors are grouped by template so you can pretty easily find the rule you want to change (TEXTAREA font is pretty large by default...).

One great improvement: the little bold, italic, underline, and link buttons in the editing interface work in non-IE browsers...finally! That alone is worth the upgrade.

The venerable bookmarklet feature has been changed to "Quickpost" (probably avoid conflicting with the JavaScript hacks that people call "bookmarklets"), but it appears to be screwed at the moment — formatting is all off and the TEXTAREA is about 10-pixels wide.

So, while this upgrade looks promising, hang loose for a week or so before rushing in. There are some speedbumps to work out yet. I'll post about the new functionality as I play with it.

After reading a forum post yesterday inquiring about DSL vs. cable download speeds (specifically Cox Cable), I though I’d write about one of OS X’s more underappreciated applications. Let’s face it. If you’re using OS X, you’re using the Internet; and if you’re using the Internet, you’re looking for one thing: speed. For most people, dial-up just doesn’t cut it anymore, and for some, cable speeds still aren’t enough. While Safari and Camino have taken care of many gripes about page...

Must download TV

Must download TV 08/11/2004 11:30 AM

Farhad Manjoo has written an excellent report on IPTV.

Aug. 11, 2004 | Hollywood's nightmare scenario is that high-definition TV will become "Napsterized," with shows available online to anyone, anytime, for free -- which may sound, to some TV fans, less like a nightmare than a heavenly dream.

And, indeed, despite Hollywood's efforts, it's a dream that in many ways is coming true. While the government and Hollywood fret over ways to keep high-definition television off the Internet, copies of standard-definition TV shows are now heavily traded online. Once an underground activity plagued by hard-to-use tools and less-than-stellar picture quality, the systems for finding and downloading TV are steadily becoming easier to use, and the current watchability of the shows is nothing to scoff at.

In recent months, a host of developers and TV enthusiasts have been working on ways to improve the TV trade online -- they're building sophisticated trading networks to record and encode and distribute shows, and they're improving peer-to-peer transfer systems to make downloading easier. The hottest new improvement is made possible by the merging of two of the Internet's newest innovations, the p2p protocol BitTorrent and RSS, the popular Web syndication standard. Together, these systems allow a computer to automatically find and download a user's favorite shows -- something like having a TV station designed just for you.

Download In The Store

Download In The Store 06/25/2004 12:11 PM
Jeremiah writes "On the heels of iTunes announcement that it has sold 800,000 tracks in its first week of operation in Europe, BestBuy announces it will partner with Napster and promote it as its "leading digital music service." It's my personal belief this signals the beginning-of-the-end of the "shiny, plastic-disc" era of digital music... but I digress. The "scoop", however, is not the above stories (which you can read anywhere); they're just for context. Word on the street is a major bookseller (B&N or Borders) is planning to install WiFi in its stores *AND* provide access to libraries of digital music for download onto your device of choice. One marketing idea is to sell mp3 players in-store with a $10 gift-cert for digital downloads, or players with audio-books preloaded. To access their in-store WiFi, customers will lease a wireless NIC on an hourly basis, that's been "keyed" to only work on their network (removing the motivation to steal the nics). The hourly cost is "...somewhere around what you'd pay for a large coffee." Word is a beta will be in some west-coast stores around August-Sept." There have been similar rumors of services at certain music stores in the past, but it sounds like such talk is heating up. Of course, this does make you wonder what the purpose of the "store" is? If you can download from anywhere, why would you need to go to a store to download?
