Vivato Deploys at Lincoln University
11/03/2003 02:35 PMVivato's switches save years and dollars at university: This
installation would have been challenging for conventional wireless
LANs, the press release notes, because the university spans many
buildings across 400 acres. Many of the 40 buildings are historic,
which probably translates into "no wiring closets" and an aging
electrical physical plant. The backstory of a press release like this
is that Vivato finds it necessary to promote the installation of their
equipment at institutions with unique characteristics rather than
announcing the sale of their gear to Fortune 5000 companies or
wireless ISPs....

Distance Doctoring, Distance Nursing And
Distance Learning... All Coming Back
Distance Doctoring, Distance Nursing And
Distance Learning... All Coming Back
05/12/2004 03:58 AMThe internet makes it easier to communicate with people over large
distances, and for years we've been hearing about the power of
"distance" everything. More recently, some of that talk had died down
after the early promises of distance learning/doctoring/whatever
failed to live up to its early hype. However, it appears that the
distance concept is coming back into fashion. One after the other, we
just came across three such stories. First, is the news of a hospital
in Michigan that is using a
robot with a video screen for a head to let remote doctors talk
to and examine patients. The doctor's can control the robot from
another location (such as home) in order to look over a patient
without being there in person. Of course, the idea isn't to replace
the need for the doctor to be present, but to make it easier in
situations when the doctor is away and is needed quickly (such as to
look over something in the middle of the night when they're home).
Meanwhile, over in the Netherlands, it's not the doctors who get to
stay home, but the patients, who can now use a
webc
am system to communicate with nurses. The idea is to help out the
elderly who are confined to their homes but can't afford to have a
healthcare worker visiting them on a regular basis. Meanwhile,
outside of the healthcare field it appears that even
e-learning is making a comeback, as companies are using it more
strategically, to help keep employees up-to-date and trained - but not
relying on it as a full replacement for training programs. No matter
what, it looks like another bunch of concepts discredited during the
boom and bust years are now making a comeback.
University of Texas Removes Wi-Fi Ban
University of Texas Removes Wi-Fi Ban
09/16/2004 11:29 AMThe University of Texas at Dallas, which recently set a rule
forbidding students from building their own Wi-Fi networks, rescinded
the policy: The action of forbidding the networks created quite a buzz
online. University officials referred to an FCC notice posted in June
that makes it clear that the FCC is the only body that has
jurisdiction over the airwaves. While universities have some control
over what students do in student housing, in this case, the student
building is not owned by the university. That means the university has
less rights to control what students do there. [link via Frank]...

More on University of Texas Wi-Fi Policy
09/10/2004 01:01 PMAn association of university telecom administrators has already asked
the FCC to clarify whether universities can ban Wi-Fi networks: The
University of Texas recently banned students from setting up their own
Wi-Fi networks, stating that the independent networks were interfering
with a free university-maintained network. The FCC told the
Association of College and University Telecommunications
Administrators that schools can prohibit students living in campus
housing from building wireless networks. But, if the school leases
residential property where students live, they can't restrict the use
of wireless networks. The right of the University of Texas to forbid
students from using their own wireless networks will depend on who
owns the building the students live in....

To Quantum Computing
Long Distance Teleportation Could Lead
To Quantum Computing
08/22/2004 03:16 PMPhysicists have carried out successful teleportation with particles of
light over a distance of 600m across the River Danube in Austria.
When physicists say "teleportation", they are describing the
transfer of key properties from one particle to another without a
physical link. Quantum teleportation relies on an aspect of physics
known as "entanglement"; whereby the properties of two
particles can be tied together even when they are far apart. Einstein
called it "spooky action at a distance".
Long distance teleportation is crucial if dreams of superfast quantum
computing are to be realised.
"The really interesting question for us was whether we could do
this outside a lab setting, in the environment used for today's
fibre-optic communications," co-author Rupert Ursin of the
University of Vienna told BBC News Online. "This is very
important if you are talking about investing money in quantum
communication."
Quantum teleportation could be harnessed for fast, powerful computers
or communication networks.

09/09/2004 12:29 PMThe University of Texas at Dallas has instituted a new policy that
forbids students from setting up their own Wi-Fi networks: The
university says the many independent networks cause problems for
students trying to connect to the university provided wireless
network. I'd like to know why so many students are setting up their
own hotspots if the university offers free access--perhaps the
university needs to improve their network so that students won't have
the need to build their own. It will be interesting to see how
students react to the new policy. As noted on Slashdot, this appears
to be a case where an organization other than the FCC is attempting to
regulate the airwaves. The FCC has recently clarified that it is the
only body that controls the airwaves....

Texas City Hires Network Builder for
Wi-Fi
Texas City Hires Network Builder for
Wi-Fi
03/22/2005 11:54 PM Addison, Texas, has franchised a wireless data network (map): The
town awarded Plano, Texas's RedMoon the franchise to build and operate
a wireless high-speed data network using Wi-Fi in the 4.3-square-mile
town. There's no discussion of how get the coverage of a promised 1
Mbps inside buildings, and they do sound like they want to build a T-1
competitive service, which is tricky to unlikely for a general purpose
cloud-style network. They could certainly mix and match equipment. A
Texas bill that will hit the house floor on March 23 once would have
made even this sort of public/private franchise agreement illegal.
Arm's length relationships wouldn't have helped. The provision was
stripped but will likely return as an amendment. What's fascinating
about this is that although the town awarded a franchise, there should
be no factors in place besides siting issues for towers or antennas
that would prevent any number of competing WISPs in town. It's just
unlikely that with one firm having city support that others would try
to compete. As I've noted before, it might be better to hire a firm to
operate the infrastructure and others that would sign up customers,
thus separating the two functions and ensuring two separate robust
layers. In a town this small, that probably wouldn't have worked,
though. Incumbents didn't raise a fuss, and RedMoon is careful to note
that they're not going to be as fast as the incumbents. They'll likely
compete more with low-speed DSL and even dial-up rather than with
high-speed DSL and cable-modem service....

AT&T Wireless Offers 3G in Dallas and
San Diego
09/01/2004 09:52 AMAT&T Wireless said it is offering its 3G network in Dallas and San
Diego: San Diego should be a particularly interesting market as it
will be the first in the country to have competing 3G
services--Verizon Wireless already has its EV-DO network live there.
It will also be interesting to watch if the two networks seem to have
any affect on Wi-Fi usage. On a side note, AT&T Wireless cleverly uses
the term "metropolitan hotspot" to describe the service in the two
markets. That term is usually used to describe the stringing together
of Wi-Fi hotspots to cover a large region or by WiMax-like
technologies that aim to blanket a city. It's really a stretch to
compare the AT&T Wireless service to Wi-Fi. AT&T Wireless says its
network offers 220 kbps to 320 kbps, with bursts up to 384 kbps, while
even 802.11b, depending on how many people are sharing a network,
usually can deliver multiple megabits of throughput....

"Dallas" -- in Romania
07/12/2004 02:11 PMBlogger and journalist
Emmanuelle Richard just got back from Romania, where she
photoblogged
these
incredible
snapshots<
/a> of what must be the Nth great wonder of the world -- a gigantic,
sprawling replica of the set of the TV show "Dallas." Even Larry
Hagman said it's a perfect match of the real thing, according to
Emmanuelle:
The florid theme park is not as glorious as it used to be!
"Southforkscu" as locals call it was opened in 1996 in Slobozia,
South-Est of Bucharest, by the King of Romanian cheddar, Ilie
Alexandru: he's one these egomaniac and corrupt nouveau-riche
entrepreneurs typical of post-Communist Eastern European countries.
It's like a cross between an amusement park and a luxury resort.
Originally, visitors could tour the ranch, ride horses, swim in the
swimming pools, visit a small zoo, enjoy the lake and climb the 50
meters Eiffel Tower. And of course, spend a night in the Dallas ranch.
Larry Hagman even visited! But Alexandru went to jail for fraud. A
string of investors have failed to revive the place. One of them, a
Russian dude even painted the ranch in ORANGE! The zoo is closed, the
horses are gone... The Romanian hotel chain now in charge wants to
remodel it, open a night-club. We interviewed the manager - pure
Commie style, just unbelievable. I don't have much faith in this guy's
management!
This artist Sean Snyder produced an exhibit about the esthetics of
the place "Script For Dallas Southfork In Hermes Land, Slobozia,
Romania (2001)" It went to Paris and Berlin (Link). This page contains details about the place and a pic of
the ranch before the paint job. It's quite surreal, especially when
you see the Eiffel Tower from the road, behind rows of
cornfields.

02/01/2005 08:46 PMSencore Electronics is sponsoring a five day “Maximizing Home Theater
Performance” certification seminar in Dallas, Texas. In this seminar
you will learn what makes a good home theater, including pitfalls to
avoid, check lists to follow, and ways to build your installation
business. You’ll learn how the entire room ambiance including the
video image, sound quality, room acoustics, and RF distribution are as
much a part of the home theater environment as the electronic
components themselves. Plus, you’ll receive extensive hands on
training on how to efficiently use the right tools, and make
measurements that eliminate guesswork and subjective decisions. [PRWEB
