D-Link DSM-320 Wireless Media Player

D-Link DSM-320 Wireless Media Player 06/15/2004 06:54 AM

dlink_dsm320.jpg image

While it's one of the first wireless media players to come with 802.11g WiFi stock standard, a few usability hang-ups prevent PC Magazine's review team from giving the D-Link DSM-320 a better than average score. It's got all the media playback mojo you'd expect from these modern day VCRs (which are really just hardware front-ends to your computer's media collection), yet the file browsing has some serious limitations (like no 'play album' selections and a broken search algorithm), there is a single, obnoxious screen saver, and the streaming internet radio is limited to only AOL Radio, leaving behind the thousands of free stations of the web. Up the upside, the hardware is solid, with lots of I/O ports and a decent remote, and most of the issues software based, meaning there's no reason that D-Link couldn't fix them in the future. For $170, you could almost risk buying it now and trusting D-Link to patch the firmware later.

D-Link Wireless Pocket Router/AP

D-Link Wireless Pocket Router/AP 08/13/2004 12:19 PM

D-Link-DWL-G730AP.jpg imageFollowing Apple and SMC's lead, D-Link is releasing a travel-sized Wi-Fi access point, the "Wireless Pocket Router/AP." Among other tricks, the D-Link DWL-G730AP can receive power over USB, sort of an odd twist that would mean your handy pocket router all the sudden would tie your laptop back into the wall (unless you brought two laptops, natch). Looks decent, all-in-all, and much more attractive than the SMC (and dare I say the AirPort Express?)

Expect it in mid-September for around $100.

d-link_dsm-320.jpg imageThe Apple Airport Express (shipping this week, by the way) is a decent option for those already using iTunes, but what if you want to stream more than that? NoDRM takes a(nother) look at one option, the D-Link DSM-320 Wireless Multimedia Player, an 802.11g-enabled streaming media outlet that can stream not only audio, but all sort of different kinds of video -- most of the major video formats in fact (even DVD VOB files). The only real downside they see to the $166 player is the inability to change the aspect ratio of video (which can lead to movies looking oddly smushed) and the inability of 802.11g to always provide enough bandwidth to stream video over even relatively short distances, say, from a downstairs computer to an upstairs Multimedia Player. Of course, you can always fall back on wired Ethernet.

D-Link announced on Thursday the introduction of its new AirPlus Wireless Pocket Router/AP (Access Point), a device slightly smaller than a typical PDA that allows travelers to access and share wireless Internet connections while on the road. It features 802.11b and 802.11g compatibility, the ability to power itself over a USB port with the included adapter and three modes: router/firewall, access point and wireless client. In router mode, the device offers a firewall, an internal DHCP server for distributing IP addresses and support for VPN pass-through.

UPS Starts Wireless Logistical
Deployment in Europe

UPS Starts Wireless Logistical
Deployment in Europe
06/22/2004 01:51 PM
UPS starts its global roll-out of Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, cellular systems to speed up package processing: The system will start its rollout in Europe in package sorting centers. Sorts will wear a Bluetooth ring on their middle finger that will scan bar codes. The ring hands data off to a belt-worn Wi-Fi device which communicates with the network. By 2007, UPS will have 55,000 ring scanners deployed in 118 countries. They predict enormous savings in repairs and downtime as well as spare parts inventory. It also provides worker flexibility: there's no fixed station needed. 73 sites will have the system deployed by the end of 2005. UPS will install about 12,000 access points across 2,000 facilities as part of this rollout. While they say the resulting network will be one of the largest in the world, a conversation I had with a firm today that builds software to manage large-scale access point deployments indicates that there may be several hundred companies today with thousands of access points across all branches, and that topping 10,000 access points for a worldwide corporation won't be unusual in a year or two. In the U.S., UPS is testing its DIAD IV (Delivery Information Acquisition Device) which combines GPS (for positioning), Bluetooth (for scanning), Wi-Fi (for transmission), and GSM/GPRS cellular data (for uplinking). The device even has an acoustic modem for the backroads that UPS finds itself delivering packages to....
