Down Under, The E-Voting Is Open Source

Down Under, The E-Voting Is Open Source 11/03/2003 12:21 PM
While the problems with Diebold's electronic voting machines in the US are well documented, it looks like folks in Australia are taking a much smarter path to create secure electronic voting machines. They made sure that the voting software was open sourced, and that it was reviewed by independent parties - something that Diebold and other voting machine makers in the US refuse to do. Admittedly, the machines in Australia don't have a paper receipt, in case of an audit, but even the lead engineer on the project there thinks they should add that. He has a great line when asked to respond to the complaints from the industry that adding a paper receipt to electronic voting machines would add considerable expense: "Did anyone ever say that democracy was meant to be cheap?"

A thought-provoking piece on cures for e-voting woes, from today's New York Times
Electronic voting has much to offer, but will we ever be able to trust these buggy machines? Yes, we will -- but only if we adopt the techniques of the ''open source'' geeks.

One reason it's difficult to trust the voting software of companies like Diebold is that the source code remains a trade secret. A few federally approved software experts are allowed to examine the code and verify that it works as intended, and in some cases, states are allowed to keep a copy in escrow. But the public has no access, and this is troublesome. When the Diebold source code was accidentally posted online last year, a computer-science professor looked at it and found it was dangerously hackable. Diebold may have fixed its bugs, but since the firm won't share the code publicly, there's no way of knowing. Just trust us, the company says.

Whenever I mention open source software, or the Linux operating system, I can be sure of getting lots of "interesting" mail in my inbox. There's a good bit of confusion about open source software among members of the general public, journalists of the general press and even among those of us who should know better.

As an occasional user of Linux, and someone in the software industry, I've followed the "Open Source" movement for quite some time. To a minority, Open Source Software (specifically GPL licensed Open Source Software) represents an ideological and sociological movement, something that will change the world. To the majority, it is simply a way to get cool and useful software without going through the expense of buying, or the hassle of pirating it.

Dan Farber reports from the OSBC here in SF and let's us know what Larry Augustimn said. He's identified specific models and shown how companies are asking their clients to pay them to convince them to hire them.

That is so beautiful.

And watch Doc's IT Garage for more goings on in this area. It's time to cash in and kick the old school - out. I guess the next scene is Portland Aug. 1-4 at OSCON.

BTW Dan Farber is one of my favorite peeps.

Free software and Open Source: The freedom Debate and Its Consequences By Mathias Klang
ht tp://www.firstmonday.org/issues/issue10_3/klang/index.html

Abstract:
To most outsiders the ethics of software is not something usually considered. To most proficient computer users with a passing interest in this question the ethics of software is recognised as one of the fundamental questions in the digital rights area. To most of the latter, terms such as free software, open source, and their derivatives (FLOSS, FOSS, Software Freedom) are interchangeable. Choosing one over the other is a matter of taste rather than politics. However, to most insiders the
question is not one of taste. There is a fundamental difference between the two areas even if they share a similar root. Free software is not the same as open source. The two groups differ in their fundamental philosophical approach to software and its importance to society as a whole. This paper examines the two groups’ differing philosophies and explores how their actions have affected software development, access to fundamental software infrastructure, and the development of the concept of freedom.

J.T. Smith, founder and CEO of Illinois-based Plain Black Software, didn't originally plan to work full-time on WebGUI, a user-friendly Web content management system (CMS) he first released in 2001. Since then, J.T. has built a profitable business selling WebGUI documentation, training, and consulting. This article is the lightly-edited transcript of an IRC conversation J.T. and I had on 5 January 2004. J.T. is as open as WebGUI's source code about how and why his company is profitable, which makes this article "required reading" for anyone who's ever thought about building a company based on open source software.

A model for open source software
development

Critics of open source software have argued that, from an economic standpoint, "giving the product away" makes no sense. As a new business model, open source has been the victim of many misconceptions and mischaracterizations: that it's the equivalent of communism, that's it's like a virus, and that it's economically dangerous to society, for example. In such a hostile atmosphere, it's not easy to objectively assess a new paradigm that differs greatly from the status quo. However, though a comparable model may not exist in the IT sector, a parallel working model for open source already exists in at least one other field, biomedical research, and this model has been proven to be of great benefit to society.

Script ing News: 5/17/2004: Dave Winer announced today that the kernel of Manila and Radio — the object databae code — will be open-sourced sometime in the next few months.

To fans of UserLand Software it must seem inevitable that the kernel will go this way, it sure did to me. But I am on the board of directors of the company, and I persuaded my fellow board members that it would be in the company's interest to let the kernel develop separately from the products that build on it.

Don't get too excited, however — these are the ugly guts of the system, written in C. It will take a fair amount of work for someone to do anything constructive with it.
