Electronic medical record keeping places

09/07/2004 04:15 PM
BOSTON - It's a rainy April evening in Danville, Pa. The sidewalks on Mill Street are empty. Once-handsome 19th century brick facades are faded and the storefronts--Dollar Store, D's Clothier--are dark. Two small restaurants and a bar are open, but empty--or nearly so--adding weight to the street's designation as a "historic" business district. The scene here is a common one in rural Pennsylvania and in small towns throughout the United States, where economies built on agriculture and manufacturing have given way in recent decades to a low-wage, service-sector economy and its placeless landscape of strip malls and chain stores. A tension between old and new can be felt everywhere in Danville (population roughly 4,900), which was settled on the banks of the Susquehanna River in 1777 by William Montgomery. His 1792 stone house--now a museum--still stands at the end of Mill Street, directly across the street from a Wendy's restaurant.

Medical Imaging Collaborative

Medical Imaging Collaborative 04/06/2005 06:17 PM
Medical imaging research is complex, time-consuming and often very expensive, with a wide range of standards, equipment and software available. Medical researchers can find themselves unable to share data easily with colleagues. Two enterprising medical doctors addressed this problem and came up with a Macintosh-only solution called OsiriX that is changing how many in the field examine and share scanned images, medical image data and visualizations. Update on my Medical Condition

Update on my Medical Condition 07/16/2004 03:31 AM

Went to see my Neurology doctor today, and after him asking me about 50 questions, taping on my knee's and various other places and sending me to Radiology for 3 separate x-rays and over to the Brace shop to order me what's called a LCL which supposedly cost about $5000.00 he gave me the thumbs up to return to work tomorrow.

I am a bit apprehensive as I still cannot sit straight up for long periods. Guess I will be taking frequent breaks. Hopefully I can keep up with the pace my job demands. I am not looking forward to spending 6 more weeks in the brace but hey it could have been much worse. Supposedly the LCL will be more comfortable. The attendant that measured me said I will loose about 10 pounds during the first month sounds good to me already lost 10 in the first brace and the wife is jealous. Physical Therapy will be lite for the first 6 weeks then he is going to cut them loose on me.. Oh boy!

Does medical insurance have to be

Does medical insurance have to be
heartless?
05/16/2004 12:08 PM
A friend of mine has been fighting chronic illness for years, a service-related disability (US Marine Corps), and has recently (finally) been able to get some relief ... and, naturally, insurance won't cover the costs. The Veterans Administration has been involved from the beginning, but has so far proven to be incapable of helping (drug pushing, mainly), and now she's stuck with thousands of dollars of bills for necessary medical treatment that insurance won't pay for. Oh, she works as a software engineer for one of the largest companies in the USA (and the world), and they treat her like she's a malingerer for having chronic illnesses. Where should she go for help and advice that will do as little as possible to make the financial issue any worse? How is it that a pretty well-funded system like the VA can fail so miserably at one of its primary responsibilities (care of veterans who suffer service-related disabilities)? Is there any compassion left in the US? Or have we all gone the way of the Almighty Dollar?
